www.thetimes.co.uk/article/firms-must-list-foreign-workers-gw20ndp5x

Saw this report this am and my blood ran cold. Is this - lists of all foreigners - not the beginning of a very slippery slope which leads to yellow stars sewn on to clothing?

I'm wondering what constitutes a 'FOREIGNER'? Surely not my very good French born Scottish friend who has lived, worked, been married in the UK for nearly 50 years? Or the 3rd generation Asian Scots who run our local convenience store? Or the music teacher who coaches the Wee Community steel band - she's from the USA (and one of the drummers is (shock horror) German. Or the Syrian and Polish families now at school with my DGC. What about DH's Consultants? The last one was from New Zealand, the Current one is, I think, Indian. Will the Houses of Parliament have to list all the MPs and Lords who were born elsewhere.

Am I the only one to hear alarm bells ringing in my ears more loudly than usual? Have we reached a tipping point, where rampant British Nationalism is the only mantra?

Great software MazieD. (Almost as good as the photoshopping software that is used by magazines to make people like Helen Mirren look as if she has the complexion of an 8 year old. Of course newspapers have never used it to make anyone look either older or younger.)
I would think that if the England Under 18s had been on a very arduous camping trip for a few months, with inadequate food and few opportunities for washing and shaving the software would add on a few years to them all.

Jalima Thu 20-Oct-16 16:50:02

confused me not you!
I have seen plenty who are under 18 only a very small number have arrived so far.

Jalima Thu 20-Oct-16 16:49:09

that was meant to be I have seen plenty who are under 18, and only a very small number have arrived so far. (your words, sorry, it didn't seem to work).

Jalima Thu 20-Oct-16 16:48:11

I saw plenty who easily looked under 18.

Were you there daphnedil?
Just wondering, because I have seen plenty who are under 18, and only a very small number have arrived so far.

I did see a picture of a small boy still in Calais who claimed to have been 'elbowed out of the way' by older youths eager to reach the UK.
Who is in charge of this over there in Calais?

Feasts, Pigeons and Cornfield comes to mind.

We are being told that we are allowing vulnerable children in, this is why people are so cynical when most of them look considerably older than 18. I think we should do much more to take our share of refugees from Lebanon and Turkey, these should be families including women, small children, not leaving the women and girls behind in the poor conditions there. I am against allowing in disproportionate numbers of grown males who have elbowed their way to the front of the queue. I think this policy will bring with it considerable social problems further down the line.

Jalima Thu 20-Oct-16 16:23:46

Absolute rubbish! I saw plenty who easily looked under 18.
Yes, but those who are older and try to get in by lying about their age (and there are some!) do the children whom we should be welcoming here a disservice by making people suspicious.

Whatever happened to women and children first? I know it is children in this case, but where are the very small vulnerable children we were told about - are they here yet? - they should be an absolute priority.
The thought of children the same age as my DGC 8, 9 or 10 or so, wandering around without anyone to care for them is horrific. We were told there were many of them, why are they not the first to be brought over?

Jalima Thu 20-Oct-16 16:14:23

gilly you must be young ( lucky you) as my Grandad fought in the first world war.Father in the second one.

roses my Dad was in the First World War too, as well as the Second.
(I must be old)

Jalima Thu 20-Oct-16 16:12:31

Do you think the age-checking software works the other way MaizieD - will it say I am only 32?

gillybob Thu 20-Oct-16 16:09:12

My daughter looks about 18 and she's 31. Just saying.

She finds it very annoying to be interrogated by a shop assistant to buy a bottle of wine and still has to carry her dog eared passport around with her as proof of age.

daphnedill Thu 20-Oct-16 16:04:34

Absolute rubbish! I saw plenty who easily looked under 18.

Firecracker123 Thu 20-Oct-16 15:59:51

Nearly all of the new arrivals from Calais are obviously not under the age of 18. Even an idiot would be able to see that.

durhamjen Thu 20-Oct-16 14:59:30

Firecracker, in this country we are now considered children up to the age of 18.

www.politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2016/10/20/the-government-is-betraying-the-20-000-syrian-refugees-it-pl

When the government said it was taking in 20,000 migrants by 2020, it did not say it was only going to take in youngsters, so why this concentration on age?

The problem is how few refugges have been allowed to come to the UK, not how old they are.

There is a problem which does not often get mentioned with children; they are usually only given temporary leave to remain, and are then often returned to their country of origin at 18.
Could you imagine being sent back to Afghanistan at the age of 18, when you've been living here for 5 years?
Another inhumane act.

Firecracker123 Thu 20-Oct-16 14:42:26

Surely a bit of common since is needed. My nephew is disabled but now classed as an adult for benefit purposes and he is 16 years old. We should only a accept unaccompanied migrants up to the age of 16.

MaizieD Thu 20-Oct-16 13:29:00

Rigby I hesitated to bring up the ethics issue as I felt that it would be received even less sympathetically than the few Calais immigrants who have managed to make it to the UK sad

Rigby46 Thu 20-Oct-16 12:13:54

MaizieD grin. Re the dentists - the BDA says that clinically unnecessary radiographs are unethical so that's a problem as well as the 5 year issue

Welshwife Thu 20-Oct-16 12:13:45

That sort of thing does their cause no good whatsoever - just ammunition to those who would prefer UK ignored all migrants/asylum seekers. Did they give any sensible reason for trying to fool the authorities?

gillybob Thu 20-Oct-16 12:11:24

Charity TACT has been forced to admit that they lied about migrant "child" who looks considerably older than his claimed age and is NOT a Home Office interpreter after all.

daphnedill Thu 20-Oct-16 11:45:40

@MaizieD grin grin

Welshwife Thu 20-Oct-16 11:30:14

I heard on Radio4 yesterday that dental age can only be given within five years either way so not really reliable.
Last week Bernard Cazenove a French Govt Minister said how the Calais migrants were the responsibility of both France and UK and that solving the problem is a joint one.
If the French had not agreed to have the border control at Calais these migrants would all have been allowed to travel and not been stopped until they reached Dover or Folkstone. I assume it will be up to the French Govt whether or not they allow this border position privilege to continue after the UK leaves the EU. I saw one report which has warned the UK Govt they need to start building areas at the ports to keep the lorries etc for Customs and other checks after Brexit.

This is what the amazing software @DailyMailUK used to age-check migrants makes of the England Under-17s.

MaizieD Thu 20-Oct-16 10:23:43

I'm afraid that 'My country right or wrong' is not a particularly attractive sentiment for many of us.

rosesarered Thu 20-Oct-16 09:02:43

Yes, I do wonder about the people who constantly belittle the UK, whilst enjoying all the freedoms and benefits of their own country.

rosesarered Thu 20-Oct-16 09:00:09

I did say the word 'if'........ but if teeth are not a good indicator of age, then common sense on looking at a person should tell you. nobody of 30 looks like a Teenager.

petra Thu 20-Oct-16 08:59:59

Firecracker123 people on here who despise their own country fortunately they are in the minority, the referendum showed that, thank god.

MaizieD Thu 20-Oct-16 08:56:56

a quick dental check could be done,

Dentists (you know, those experts on teeth) say that it is unreliable.
