As I made a mistake and posted in 'Brexit, power to the people' - here is Brexit4.

I know some of you don't like 'experts' or their opinions, but I do urge all to listen to this man again, from Liverpool University, calmly and expertly explaining what the single market is, and how it does work

granjura Apologies to those who are trying to have an intelligent exchange here ... I gave up at that point

There is absolutely no need to apologise, your comments started a lighthearted (well, by most people) debate which may have been a red herring but heigh ho, we all need a distraction and a bit of fun from time to time!

I was going to make a point about HM's family changing their username but thought better of it .....

Back to Nissan, bribes, not more bailing out of car firms surely, although would the Labour party be good for any useful advice on that as they have previously bailed out car firms, banks etc?

I see that Hilary Benn has been chosen to chair the Parliamentary Committee set up to scrutinise government policy on the exit from the EU. I think Michael Gove is on the committee too. Should be interesting.

whitewave Thu 27-Oct-16 18:14:23

So Nissan has been assured that trading will be the same as now?!

So single market then?!

If not then we will bail them out. I haven't been asked as a tax payer!

What a shambles. Still the Tories are good at shambled as we know.

Ana Thu 27-Oct-16 17:46:18

Sky report says there has been no 'bribe'

Rigby46 Thu 27-Oct-16 17:44:33

nn that will be nice of them

nigglynellie Thu 27-Oct-16 17:42:38

I expect the Guardian will undoubtedly fill us in regarding Mrs May and bribes, with the usual appropriate links.

Ana Thu 27-Oct-16 17:30:25

That's a bit rich, granjura, seeing as it was your posts about username changing on GN that started all the stuff about the Queen, in fact it was you who first said she was German!

granjura Thu 27-Oct-16 17:25:59

MaizieD - I am so sorry- but the whole thing was getting so ridiculous and I got frustrated or perhaps even angry. Which is why I have been keeping away since then ...

my ridiculous statement was in response to the even more ridiculous

'It's a nice idea ( but the Queen isn't Swiss)although I did once read she has a liking for Toblerone.' ...

Apologies to those who are trying to have an intelligent exchange here ... I gave up at that point.

POGS Thu 27-Oct-16 17:18:00

Mazie d

Not saying you are either right or wrong but can you give information you obviously know of to use the word 'bribes' regarding Theresa May?

MaizieD Thu 27-Oct-16 16:59:26

Yes, it was a joke, Jalima.

I know, from experience of a number of forums, that threads meander but there's usually a tenuous connection between the OP and the meander... I can't find one between the Queen's ancestry and Brexit grin

Perhaps someone should start a Brexit 5 thread where we can discuss the big hole that's appearing in the infamous £350 million a week to the NHS as T May bribes international companies to stay in the UK and may continue payments to the EU so we can stay in the single market.hmm

Jalima Thu 27-Oct-16 15:33:32

just as bit miffed about the thread being massively derailed
threads do have a tendency to meander, though, MaizieD, just as conversations go off piste and you wonder what led you there and what you were talking about in the first place. At least with a thread and an OP you can get it back on track.

As in my last sentence!

Jalima Thu 27-Oct-16 14:54:59

Jalima, I wasn't saying anything of the sort, I was just pointing out that the royal family have a lot of German ancestors in reply to a post that, with respect, wasn't addressed to you
Oh dear, I did not realise that certain posts were addressed only to certain people.
The Queen is of course German
I was, in fact, referring to that one by granjura

and the jokey one by MaizieD
Are you Leavers all lining up to send her Maj and all her family back where she comes from when we've 'taken back control'?
(I suppose it was a joke MaizieD lol)

For you to say
Jalima, I suggest you read some history then! Your comments are bewildering and frankly absurd is both absurd and bewildering a statement as well as rude.

Could it be something to do with the weaker £ MaizieD? Better for exports?

MaizieD Thu 27-Oct-16 14:47:11

Hmm. This blog from The New Statesman might go some way to answering my question:

www.newstatesman.com/politics/economy/2016/10/were-beginning-see-what-brexit-might-look

So as ever with any story proposing the “success” of Brexit, the question comes back to how you define success. If success means sluggish growth, and increasing the amount that the state has to pay to large multinational companies to persuade them to stay while still handing over cash to Brussels, there is growing evidence that Brexit may be a success. If success means equalling or exceeding the growth of the United Kingdom within the European Union, while freeing up a cash bounty for public services, the prognosis is less good.

MaizieD Thu 27-Oct-16 14:39:30

What we don't know is how much Nissan has been given in the way of bribes to stay here.

MaizieD Thu 27-Oct-16 14:38:13

I did go back to Elizabeth of Bohemia, nigglynelly. Mother of Sophia, Electress of Hanover though I didn't mention her by name. Daughter of James Stuart and his Danish queen, Anne. I just got a bit boss eyed trying to work out James I & VIth's bloodlines! It was the weeny trace of Stuart blood that gave the throne of England to the Hanoverians.

Very few, if any, European monarchs were indigenous in the 17th, 18th, 19th centuries as they were obliged to marry into ruling families.

I'm not angry, just as bit miffed about the thread being massively derailed (says she, perpetuating the derailment...). I'd be perfectly happy to discuss the topic on a dedicated thread.

I'm also a bit hmm as to why anyone should find the Queen's ancestry in any way significant. There is a curious brand of Nationalism afoot these days; I have a very deep suspicion of nationalism.

nigglynellie Thu 27-Oct-16 14:20:44

I'm cautiously optimistic, but not counting my chickens too fervently! I'm still placing all my confidence in Mrs May to see us through to a satisfactory conclusion! Well, who else is there to be confident in?!!!!

POGS Thu 27-Oct-16 14:06:46

rosesared

Yes it is excellent news re Sunderland and the Nissan promise to not only keep the present work force but probably increase the employment numbers by expanding their production of not only the Qashqui SUV but the X-Trail also.

Also the economy grew 0.05% flying in the face of the prediction of an immediate 'Financial Armageddon' predicted by so many economists and Remain commentators.

Only a fool will be confident that this good news is not subject to changing on the turn of a sixpence but equally some have made some foolish predictions so far too.

It has to be taken day by day, week to week but it is only fair to feel as happy about good news as it is to be concerned about bad news, as long as the 'facts' are taken into consideration not here say, bias predictions or ill informed bias rhetoric whether a Remainer or Leaver. Lord knows there is enough of that about, the Nissan story is proof of waiting for the facts to know and understand the truth.

I am waiting for the disapproval of Theresa May to come forward , it has already started. Can't win scenario.

nigglynellie Thu 27-Oct-16 13:40:24

Jalima, I wasn't saying anything of the sort, I was just pointing out that the royal family have a lot of German ancestors in reply to a post that, with respect, wasn't addressed to you. Actually I find history/ancestry very interesting especially European royalty and the way they have over the centuries interconnected. I studied Tudor/Stuart/Hanovarian history for both O and A level, passing both. I wasn't making anything of it, just discussing with another poster.

whitewave Thu 27-Oct-16 13:38:34

Quarterly figures.

Services have performed better than expected and helped lift growth from 0.3 expected growth to 0.5%.
Heavy intervention by the Bank of England during this period has helped the figures.

However, agriculture, manufacturing and construction has performed worse than expected.

These figures are indicators but it is very early days its regard to the economy and Brexit.

Reliance on the service sector shows that May must be very careful in negotiating Brexit not to push this sector into the EU once we have left.

"It wasn't just the Walloon MEPs that stopped CETA, it was all the Avaaz members and members of others concerned about TTIP and CETA who persuaded them that it was a bad idea. Millions of them through our MEPs who are still at work.
Democracy in action.
You can't complain that the EU is not democratic, then complain when democracy works.

---

MaizieD Fri 21-Oct-16 23:02:24

This is why CETA and TTIP have both failed in the EU.

----

'Belgian political leaders have reached a consensus in support of the CETA Trade Deal between the EU and Canada, Prime Minister Charles Michel has said.'

'But after the latest round of marathon talks, Mr Michel tweeted: "All parliaments are now able to approve by tomorrow at midnight. Important step for EU and Canada."
He said regional politicians agreed a revised text that would allay "outstanding concerns" but gave no details.
The deal was welcomed by the head of the Wallonian government, Paul Magnette.
"We have finally found an agreement among the Belgians that will now be submitted to European institutions and our European partners," Mr Magnette said.
"Wallonia is extremely happy that our demands were heard," he added.'

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-37788882

So it looks like the EU/Canada deal (CETA) will go ahead albeit with 'revised text'.

That should please you durhamjen , Maizied and a few other posters who were against the deal as it stood.

What does your MEP who sends you personal e.mails concerning CETA and TTIP have to say.? I am interested as to what the 'revised text' concerns, she would obviously know as you have told us she sits on the committee involved.

Jalima Thu 27-Oct-16 12:03:11

is it better to be absurd than rude?

Jalima Thu 27-Oct-16 12:02:33

Jalima, I suggest you read some history then! Your comments are bewildering and frankly absurd.
Which comments are absurd? Or bewildering?

Or are you saying that people born in this country are not British if they have some ancestors who were born overseas?
confused

I'll ask DH, he gives history lectures .....

nigglynellie Thu 27-Oct-16 11:51:52

Jalima, I suggest you read some history then! Your comments are bewildering and frankly absurd.
Yes, roses, excellent news! Barclays are in profit too! I actually think Russia is far more of a worry than Brexit!

rosesarered Thu 27-Oct-16 11:32:14

Good Brexit news....Nissan in Sunderland are going to build new cars there, securing the jobs .Also growth looks good, better than expected in the UK since June.smile

Jalima Thu 27-Oct-16 11:06:00

George V1th was German through and through

OMG I must be French through and through (both sides)
Although there must be some Anglo-Saxon and Welsh thrown in too
Please let me stay here in the UK

Jalima Thu 27-Oct-16 11:03:37

Are you Leavers all lining up to send her Maj and all her family back where she comes from when we've 'taken back control'?]

Well, I am really confused now as I believe that the poster who first referred to Her Maj as German is not a Brexiter (I could be wrong, of course)

I'm not desperate, either!
