By the way, have you had your DNA tested, to make that claim, daphne?
Better not ask that on an open forum. Might give people ideas.
Good Morning Tuesday 12th May 2026
Very interesting article about T May. Forgive me if it's been posted before.
I think that the author is proposing that the Murdoch media have been superseded by the Daily Mail in setting the agenda for 'British' and that Theresa May is a product and perpetrator of its agenda.

The Daily Mail takes power
Anthony Barnett 5 October 2016
After 25 years in politics Theresa May has no obvious connections to any think tank. She shows no interest in ideas. Asked by Conservative Home in a Quick Quiz session to choose between Burke’s “Reflections on the Revolution in France” or Louise Bagshawe’s “Desire”, she replied, “I wouldn’t read either of them, sorry.” The prime minister who faces arguably the Kingdom’s deepest constitutional predicament since George III was driven from the Cabinet by the loss of the American colonies dismissed out of hand the idea that she might ever turn to the pages of Burke, even though as a student she had chaired a society named after him.
As the country faces an unprecedented concatenation of economic, strategic, diplomatic and constitutional uncertainty, the woman at the helm seems devoid of intellectual resources. The one decision she has definitely taken is to give the go ahead to Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, a boondoggle incapable of justification by any criteria of integrity. The Pharaohs built their own pyramids, Theodoric built his own mausoleum. But these were designed as monuments to generate the admiration of posterity. Surely only an idiot would make their first decision the go-ahead for a colossal radioactive tombstone to her regime.
But Theresa May should not be dismissed as an idiot. There is a striking and potentially formidable coherence to the general direction she has set for her new government, evidenced by the self-confidence of her ministers who remarkably quickly are singing from the same song-sheet. She does seem to have a clear ideology refreshingly different from her predecessors. Where has it come from?
The answer is The Daily Mail. On Sunday in her first speech to her party as its leader, she set out her view of Brexit and announced that she intends to trigger Article 50 to start the UK’s withdrawal from the EU before March. This was a moment of upmost gravity, to recognise and measure the immense divisions that have been opened up within the country, and consider the implications for the entire continent that Britain once helped liberate from fascism. Instead, her tone, brevity and apparent practicality were drawn as if directly from a Daily Mail editorial.
Intelligent comments section, too.

Can my daughters in law stay?
They have been here and paying taxes and NI for over 20 years.
One of them is Spanish, and I know there are difficulties getting Spanish teachers now. I presume Brexiteers still think it's worth teaching foreign languages, or is that no longer necessary. Do we have to go back to shouting at foreigners when we go abroad for holidays?
Neither of them have had any serious illnesses, so no drain on the NHS.
Thank you for the link to Mike Ward's story, dj. It shows very clearly how crazy the system has become and why EU nationals, even those who have lived here for decades, feel that the UK has become an unwelcoming place. Unfortunately, the attitude of some of its citizens only bears that out. Hopefully, they only write the things they do to wind others up. It would be grotesque to think we have such xenophobes in our midst.
As somebody with pure English DNA going back centuries, I claim the right to choose who remains and who gets deported. Now where should I begin? Difficult one.
Only problem is I don't know who would want such intolerant people, so they'll have to be sent to sea in an unseaworthy dinghy.
Not pointless to the people who wrote the articles.
'I have never felt so alienated from my country. We are seriously considering leaving the UK and, assuming that Germany will be kinder to me than the UK has been to Karin, moving back to eastern Germany to regain our freedoms. There is, I think, a certain irony in that.'
I assume you didn't actually read the last article.
These rather pointless links do not offer any evidence that EU citizens are fearful of British citizenship and would sooner go home than take it.
Why do you imagine they are DJ?
So no facts then DJ.
Somehow I thought not. Even your favourite website Full Facts has not come up with a survey revealing a phobia of British citizenship among EU immigrants!
Of course until now they havent needed it yet despite this:
"Naturalisations among citizens of countries that joined the EU in 2004 are a small share of total grants of citizenship (5% in 2015), but increased sharply from 2009 onwards as people arriving in the mid-2000s began to be eligible to naturalise. The number of citizens of accession (A8) countries rose from 869 in 2009 to just under 8,300 in 2013. Since then it has dropped to 5,800 in 2015.
In facts grants of citizenship have been at record levels since 2004.

And then there are the EU citizens running businesses here, and creating jobs.
Far far fewer creating them than taking them unfortunately Jess.
And even fewer are creating jobs for Brits. All the Polski skleps for example seem to be not only be owned by Poles but staffed by Poles and run for only Poles. They are very customer unfriendly with their papered over fifties style windows offering a hostile frontage to the high street.
What facts suggest otherwise?

So DurhamJen youre not prepared to say why you believe that:
"they'll {EU citizens will} soon decide to go back where they came from if the alternative is taking British citizenship"
A quite bizarre notion.
I am genuinely curious as to why you would think this as all the facts suggest otherwise.
Why did she not give her speech in Parliament so MPs could ask questions?
We might actually get more immigrants if we end up being a tax haven off the shores of the EU.
The pound sterling rose at that moment when it became known that parliament will be given te opportunity to vote when Brexit has been finalised.
That will be in 2 years time. Thats a long time in politics. Who knows what the Trump effect will be by then, and who knows which countries will be at war.
I think EU citizens from the UK,will be offered something similar to the Green card for workers in America. the ones who want to stay will have no problem even if they dont't or can't apply for citzenship. They need to speak very good German for that.
Interested in Mrs Farage, I meant, daphnedill.
And then there are the EU citizens running businesses here, and creating jobs.
Some people never seem interested in facts.
About a third of non-EU residents in the UK are students. I can't imagine why anybody would want to deport them, when they are paying very high fees to study at British universities, are only here for a short time and keep universities afloat.
Someone mentioned that earlier (perhaps it was you, daphnedill). Not sure why anyone would be interested though.
Good grief! Some people do talk cobblers!
The cases which have been highlighted have mainly been EU citizens married to British citizens. If they are deported, they will in some cases leave children without one parent and won't free up homes.
I guess the solution will be for an immediate divorce and new spouse/partner.
Hmmm! Nice!
I wonder if Mrs Farage will be affected by this ruling.
EU nationals of working age are more likely to be in work than UK nationals and non-EU citizens
About 80% of working age EU citizens in the UK are in work, compared to around 75% of UK nationals and 62% of people from outside the EU.
So are you suggesting we should end non EU immigration but encourage it from the EU?
DJ said:
What are your accurate figures then, Mair?
For EU immigrants you mean (and British immigrants in the EU)?
There simply aren't any! I am surprised you didn't realise that.
Nobody counts people in an out, and the ONS estimates are based only on a voluntary survey held a few times a year at various entry point.
European figures for Brits, while also estimates, are based on far more reliable source information because most EU countries have som type of local registration system for all residents.
Now DJ perhaps you could explain why you are making this very strange unevidenced claim?
But don't worry; they'll soon decide to go back where they came from if the alternative is taking British citizenship
I rather hope you are right, if even some of them leave it will free up homes for British people and leave job vacancies which would be excellent news for job seekers.

Why would EU immigrants work on the black market when they don't need to?
