Very interesting article about T May. Forgive me if it's been posted before.

I think that the author is proposing that the Murdoch media have been superseded by the Daily Mail in setting the agenda for 'British' and that Theresa May is a product and perpetrator of its agenda.

The Daily Mail takes power
Anthony Barnett 5 October 2016

After 25 years in politics Theresa May has no obvious connections to any think tank. She shows no interest in ideas. Asked by Conservative Home in a Quick Quiz session to choose between Burke’s “Reflections on the Revolution in France” or Louise Bagshawe’s “Desire”, she replied, “I wouldn’t read either of them, sorry.” The prime minister who faces arguably the Kingdom’s deepest constitutional predicament since George III was driven from the Cabinet by the loss of the American colonies dismissed out of hand the idea that she might ever turn to the pages of Burke, even though as a student she had chaired a society named after him.

As the country faces an unprecedented concatenation of economic, strategic, diplomatic and constitutional uncertainty, the woman at the helm seems devoid of intellectual resources. The one decision she has definitely taken is to give the go ahead to Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, a boondoggle incapable of justification by any criteria of integrity. The Pharaohs built their own pyramids, Theodoric built his own mausoleum. But these were designed as monuments to generate the admiration of posterity. Surely only an idiot would make their first decision the go-ahead for a colossal radioactive tombstone to her regime.

But Theresa May should not be dismissed as an idiot. There is a striking and potentially formidable coherence to the general direction she has set for her new government, evidenced by the self-confidence of her ministers who remarkably quickly are singing from the same song-sheet. She does seem to have a clear ideology refreshingly different from her predecessors. Where has it come from?

The answer is The Daily Mail. On Sunday in her first speech to her party as its leader, she set out her view of Brexit and announced that she intends to trigger Article 50 to start the UK’s withdrawal from the EU before March. This was a moment of upmost gravity, to recognise and measure the immense divisions that have been opened up within the country, and consider the implications for the entire continent that Britain once helped liberate from fascism. Instead, her tone, brevity and apparent practicality were drawn as if directly from a Daily Mail editorial.

Intelligent comments section, too.

We could do a sort of lonely hearts advert
PM seeks Trade Deals with anyone, anywhere.
Torture, Imprisonment and the abandonment of human rights accepted.
Mis-treatment of women and discrimination on grounds of race or religion no barrier.
Willing to travel long distances and concede almost anything
Call Theresa

Varian

Do you believe that other EU countries have no trade deals with Turkey?

varian Sat 28-Jan-17 14:23:44

When I heard that Theresa May's next visit was to Turkey, I thought it was a spoof. Sadly no.

I agree with that, trisher.
Just the fact that Trump wants to buils a wall between the US and Mexico, and May does not want to build one in Ireland should give people pause for thought.
May was in charge of the Home Office before becoming PM. She more than anyone else knows the problems of immigration, and knows the difficulties of banning people.

trisher Sat 28-Jan-17 13:58:24

Oh please let's suck up to Merkel and the rest of the EU where human rights are respected, torture is condemned, women are given advice and an abortion if necessary, and treated with respect and consideration, where the freedom to practice one's religion is ensured and racial discrimination is illegal. And let's leave Trump to pursue his own agenda and sow discord in his own country and with his neighbours.

'The pictures of them together were gross, especially the one where they appeared to be holding hands. '

Did those who saw the photo and have made such acomment watched the actual timing of the ' hand holding '??

May and Trump were walking down a slope and Trump held her hand to ensure her safety. It lasted for a second or two for heavens sake.

It's odd there is a thread where Trump is coming under fire over his perceived 'ungentlemanly' contact with his wife Malania when meeting the Obamas. The hypocrisy is wide open to see.

Oddly enough I think what is worth commenting on is the Guardians Cartoonist Steve Bell's cartoon on Trump and Theresa May which is crude and misogynistic but no doubt some will find it humorous. It shows two pairs of feet, one female, one male in bed in a compromising position and I am being too generous in that description, lord knows why.

If that cartoon is the level to which The Guardian and some people are happy to be associated with then I despair.

Mair Sat 28-Jan-17 13:16:34

Some very good points there FC!

Firecracker123 Sat 28-Jan-17 12:59:38

I don't think the pictures of May and Trump were gross, sour grapes on your part I expect. I think she was great, we couldn't have a better PM and I'm glad Trump got in as he's anti EU. Clinton would have done us no favours just like Obama.
Could you imagine Corbyn or that Muppet Farron speaking on behalf of Britain on the world stage what a fiasco that would be, but that wouldn't happen they'd be too busy sucking up to Merkel and Brussels, although all the sucking up by Cameron got him no where.

trisher Sat 28-Jan-17 12:56:18

You can't defend the indefensible- no wonder he didn't answer. I wonder if Mrs May said she would of course be speaking up for all the things the journalist was worried about?-I doubt it.

durhamjen Sat 28-Jan-17 12:22:50

With a thirty day opt out for the US.

Ginny42 Sat 28-Jan-17 11:55:12

Never pleasant to watch anyone grovel. The pictures of them together were gross, especially the one where they appeared to be holding hands.

Watch this though. Did TM accept the question put by the British journalist. Trump's comment seems to indicate that she had approved it. But he didn't answer did he?

Why would the UK want a special relationship with that man? Because she wants a trade deal to take the weight of Brexit off her shoulders.

Mair Sat 28-Jan-17 11:23:08

I cringed at the stunning victory comment, not happy our PM hsd to grovel to this man

But presumably loved seeing Cameron have to 'grovel' to Obama...
Brown to Obama
And Blair to Bush

Every British PM has had to 'grovel' to the POTUS, other than probably Thatcher who had a genuine rapport with Regan.

rosesarered Sat 28-Jan-17 10:59:19

I would say that T May did a good job too, renewing the relationship between us and the US publicly every so often can only be good for us.She didn't go over to the US for a holiday or to grovel but to set up trade deals, only one amongst others to come.
Like it or not, Trump is President for the time being and we need to have a good relationship. We can also ( if needed) then be in a position to influence him for the future.

Firecracker123 Sat 28-Jan-17 10:46:15

I think Theresa May did a fantastic job in America. Love him or hate him President Trump is carrying out his manefesto promises.

durhamjen Sat 28-Jan-17 00:58:57

Mind you, he probably thought it okay as she had just congratulated him on his stunning victory. I suppose it did stun the world, the same as Brexit did.

Good of him waiting until May had left before he signed this. I bet he never told her he was going to do it straight away.

How well do you think all this special relationship with the US is going to go down with all the other countries May wants to trade with?
I can't imagine Trump crawling like that when/if he comes to the UK.

durhamjen Fri 27-Jan-17 19:30:34

This is interesting.
The government has decided to go ahead with allowing councils to ask suppliers about their tax interests.

A lot yes but most?
You have a source for this claim?

whitewave Fri 27-Jan-17 18:04:50

Most murders are a result of drug warfare - what an extraordinary comparison!

You are clutching at straws mair

www.irr.org.uk/news/man-murdered-for-being-polish/

British people aren't murdered for being British, are they?
I'm sure you'll correct me. Jo Cox wasn't murdered by Mair for being British, was she?

Mair Fri 27-Jan-17 17:54:43

" Polish people in this country are being killed and attacked for being Polish, because of Brexit"

Firstly Polish people are not 'being killed' or even attacked. There have been rare attacks as there are on native Brits, Asians, Jews, everybody.

A Briton was murdered by a violent Bremainer because he voted Brexit, but there is no evidence of a link betweeen Brexit and violence towards Poles.

How many Polish people have been murdered since June last year?
One.
How many Britons? Many many more. There are typically around 600 homicides a year.
