Is the sexual orientation of a judge relevent?

(412 Posts)
Penstemmon Thu 03-Nov-16 22:20:31

The Daily Mail has made an issue of a judge's sexuality to try to undermine today's High Court judgemet on Article 50.

Does anyone think this is a) relevant and b) good journalism?

Jalima Fri 11-Nov-16 19:26:58

Bags Bags Bags You obviously don't get the bigger picture here.

I have always thought that Bags got the bigger picture more than anyone else on GN!

Perhaps Liz Truss doesn't read the DM btw

djen you can tell me, I signed the Official Secrets Act wink

durhamjen Fri 11-Nov-16 19:28:02

For heaven's sake, if that's not monumentally patronising, I don't know what is!

durhamjen Fri 11-Nov-16 19:30:28

Sorry, Jalima, not to you, to bags.

I signed the official secrets act a long time ago.

Have you read the article about Gina Miller in the Guardian today?

www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/nov/11/article-50-claimant-gina-miller-safe-outside-brexit

Jalima Fri 11-Nov-16 19:30:32

What - me - monumentally patronising??
grin lol

X post!!

Jalima Fri 11-Nov-16 19:31:51

I haven't looked at any papers today, just fed up with them all

head in sand syndrome, except for coming on here.

Jalima Fri 11-Nov-16 19:34:23

Unfortunately, it seems to be par for the course for anyone who sticks their head above the parapet these days.

Remember the nasty threats just because someone wanted to put a woman (Jane Austen!) shock on a bank note??

Ana Fri 11-Nov-16 19:39:40

If you've signed the Official Secrets Act, surely you shouldn't be posting privileged information on a public website like this, whether you reveal your source or not?

Bad form, I'd say...

Jalima Fri 11-Nov-16 19:43:22

The hairdresser who started the challenge has gone into hiding, but I am not sure why judges should do so - after all, they are making difficult and, to some, controversial decisions every day.

Ana Fri 11-Nov-16 19:48:46

Well, we have no reason to believe that they have done, have we?

JessM Fri 11-Nov-16 22:19:15

Do you mean "hypercritical" or "hypocritical" BalancedBags ?
Do you not think that a PM (and/or a minister of justice) should be able to transcend party politics now and again and think of the greater good of the country?
And what makes you think that the PM has a "negotiating position"? Because very few other people seem to be convinced that she has. She keeps saying it but
She's just had a gruesome trip to India. And I'm not just talking about her thinking that it's a good idea to dress up in a gold sari/toga.
Here is a blog from the vice-chancellor of Sheffield University on just how disastrous he thought it was. Enjoy. www.timeshighereducation.com/blog/i-feel-truly-ashamed-keith-burnett-theresa-mays-trade-mission-india

And to lower the tone, here's the fashion news re the golden sari/toga with giant pasta accessory smile

Time for an inner circle of Gransnetters who have signed the Official Secrets Act (yes, me too) who can disclose nothing to each other in a furtive manner?

Or perhaps the exclusive club will turn out to consist of those who haven't signed the wretched thing.

JessM re the report in HTEd. TM was at Warwick Uni recently where she was told very clearly how much international students bring to this country. The figures (£14B in this article) need to be made more of in the national press.

Cost of University of Warwick MA's.

MA Education £15,000 + average accommodation £8,500. English pre-sessional course costs £3,090 for 10 week course; living costs, e.g. food, library, internet etc

MA in engineering £22,000 plus costs.

Add in the jobs created for servicing these students and you have an awful lot of money coming to this country and employment for the local community.

If Indian students are going elsewhere it's only a matter of time before others follow when they find they are more welcome.

I still have not been party to any secrets!

Sssh! The geese fly low this Winter.......I shall only say this once,
Meet me at the safe house and before then, talk to NOBODY!

Jalima Sat 12-Nov-16 11:04:18

I've forgotten where the safe house is - can you post the address on here please?

I won't tell anybody else.

grumppa Sat 12-Nov-16 11:31:37

Safe house has been redeveloped by Trump.

durhamjen Sat 12-Nov-16 16:32:40

Well done, Lego. Now for the others to follow.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/lego-ends-advertising-daily-mail-stop-funding-hate-campaign-a7413361.html

JessM Sat 12-Nov-16 17:40:04

Yes that is brilliant news. Time all the companies that produce feel-good Xmas adverts stop advertising in feel-bad, hate-promoting newspapers.

Jalima Sat 12-Nov-16 21:00:26

Is lego on nearly every thread?

Very good advertising just before Christmas!

POGS Sat 12-Nov-16 21:01:49

It is so I will do the same.

I have contacted Lego , not that they will give a tupenny hoot about my e.mail, to tell them I am returning a Lego set I bought 2_weeks ago for my friends granddaughter.

I am obviously not going to support a company that is prepared to assume I am a racist , hate filled person .

I am deadly serious I am concerned at the level of orchestrated politics that is taking place at the moment.

Keep telling people

'What They Can Read'
'What They Can Do'
'Who They Must Vote For'
'Forget Democracy'
'What they must think'

Suppress Free Speech, suppress freedom of choice, suppress a Free Press , suppress, suppress, suppress but when it comes back to bite you on the ass don't be as surprised.

When I watched Alastair Campbell , that well known left wing doyen of truth, trust and twaddle spewing out his rubbish I just had enough.

If you detest the Sun, The Daily Mail express your dislike but when the Rubicon gets crossed into believing you have the sole right to tell others what they can or cannot read then to be honest we have moved into dangerous territory and
authoritarianism.

rosesarered Sat 12-Nov-16 22:02:31

Exactly, it does seem to be a sign of the times, all this lofty virtue waving.

MaizieD Sat 12-Nov-16 22:10:53

I am obviously not going to support a company that is prepared to assume I am a racist , hate filled person.

I'm confused. Lego is withdrawing its financial support (i.e advertising) from the Daily Mail because the DM promotes racist and hate filled views. They are not stopping anyone reading it. Nor are they suppressing free speech. Companies have every right to chose where they advertise and consumers still have every right to chose what paper they read.

Where are you getting the 'suppression of free speech' from, POGS?

rosesarered Sat 12-Nov-16 22:16:23

Lego are doing it because of a group which is putting pressure on them ( presumably saying they will bad mouth Lego and it's products if they continue in the future to do promotions in the DM)

rosesarered Sat 12-Nov-16 22:17:17

The same group have tried to strong arm JL ( who are not giving in to them.)
