My former husband came from generations of miners. His father and uncle started their working lives as miners. They worked their butts off to get out. There's nothing noble or romantic about staying in a dirty and dangerous job when there's an option for an escape route. I don't have much sympathy for working class heroism. My own family were North Sea trawlermen. There's nothing heroic about losing fingers because they freeze or three of my ancestors who died because they were lifeboatmen. Most of my family worked hard and escaped. Most people could escape if they didn't adopt a victim mentality. Please don't lecture me about ancestry.

Yes, annie, I live in a wealthy area, but that doesn't mean that I'm wealthy. In many ways it makes my own poverty worse, because there is almost nothing available for people who aren't wealthy. Frankly, I'm getting fed up with your rants.

I'm getting fed up with the Labour Party. I couldn't care less whether Jarvis is a member of Progress or that Rachel Reeves and Debbie Abrahams are members of the Fabian Society. All of them seem like people who could actually run the country.

Dan Jarvis is one of the many vicechairs of Progress, a group set up to support Blair by acolytes of Mandelson.
Durham Council is still going to sack some of its workers and reemploy them on different contratcs, paying them less.
Brighton and Hove were going to do the same, but were outvoted.
Both council leaders are members of Progress.

Why is it offensive? It would be interesting. I am sure the teacher could learn a lot, as well as the kids.
I have experience of teaching in multilingual schools myself; just not that many languages in one class. That's all I meant, so you can stop feeling offended on behalf of whoever.

It's offensive to the teachers to describe having so many children with no English as "interesting". I've direct experience of this - one class set up for 6 - 7 year olds from various European, African and Asian countries who were placed into one school, with a new child arriving every week. The class had one inexperienced TA. The children quickly learned enough English to cope, their progress was measured as the greatest in any class that year but inevitably, they didn't reach the Sat level expected of their age group.

Roses is right in saying that immigration has had an impact on teachers. Also on the health service and all other public services. I accept daphnedill's point, that lack of resources, planning and funding from central and local government is a big issue but it's simply not good enough to dismiss the fears expressed by so many who voted Brexit about the impact of immigration on their local area.

Ive just seen yet another unedifying appearance on TV news by Dianne Abbot, dismissing the possible rise of Ukip in former Labour strongholds and making comparisons with the fall of the SDP.

Yes, I do think it's a working class thing. Sorry if that sounds snobbish, but as far as I can see 'working class values' are socially conservative, which includes xenophobia. It's not rational, so is nothing to do with school places, etc.

For what it's worth, I live in one of the top ten wealthiest areas in the country, yet this year only 75% of children were allocated places in their first choice of school - one of the lowest in the country. Stop playing the working class victim card.

Nevertheless dd that particular school may be different or may not be, but she does have to do lesson plans.She has been a teacher for 17 years and just cannot cope any more.Unlimited immigration has had a serious impact on teachers.

Roses, Areas where immigration is lowest tend to be more anti-immigration. How do you explain that? It's not immigration which is leading to long waits for health services or cuts in school places. It's lack of funding and poor planning!

Actually, dj, I usually used to find TAs a hindrance. They talk when I wanted silence and pupils over-rely on them. I worked in a school with over 30 different home languages. We had an ESOL specialist, who assessed them and those in the very early stages of learning English were withdrawn from some lessons and given intensive English lessons. The rest were given strategies for coping (plus a bilingual dictionary) and the vast majority had enough language to manage within a year. Immigrants tend to be more highly motivated than others and once their English is up to scratch, they achieve very well. There is no need for the teacher to be writins individual lesson plans.

I honestly don't see why we don't have enough people in the Uk who could train as curry chefs so we have to import them from Bangladesh.

I don't know how many (or even if there are any )TA's, but she, as the teacher has to work out all the different lesson plans.This is in Nottinghamshire btw.

dd Saying that fear of mass immigration ( with no end in sight) is only a working class obsession is simply untrue, however for those who are working class it's hardly surprising when they have long waits for hospital treatment and can't get their children into local schools ( Doctors etc can go private, should they choose to.) People with plenty of money are not more noble somehow about immigrants, but have the luxury of choice.
And on the subject of unlimited EU immigration, my friend's DD is near to breakdown as a teacher of 12 year olds as she has 15 children in her class who can't speak English well, therefore has to make complicated lesson plans for each one as well as teach the other 15 children in her class.As ex teachers will know, all this is done in the evenings and weekend.I suspect she will be giving up teaching soon.The children come from different countries, no two the same.

Blaming the 'other' be they, black, women, Jews, Moslems immigrants etc has become a national pastime. When I was young I remember seeing signs in Notting hill
Saying no n....grs, Irish or dogs. I thought we were better than this after all this time but we have started normalising prejudice. As for the Labour Party whilst batman and robin lead the party it is sadly on its way to nowhere. Oh for some charismatic leadership that appeals to more than their leadership but sadly I think it's all over.

If you are a solicitor ,doctor etc you are not in the social housing list , most like can afford private health care , why be troubled. But if you unemployed, a steel worker who has no idea if he will be in work in a months time, you have adult children desperate for their own home , you have had a knee op cancelled four times, your child has to travel miles to school because the schools closer are full, waiting two weeks to see your GP, you fear more people coming into the country. Corbyn provide political experience ? The last poll in the .guardian put Labour as most trusted with the economy 18% , Tories 44%. Most trusted leader Corbyn 17% , May 45%, no leader has ever managed to get down to 17%.

Can I put in a plea on behalf of my local curry house too, for more chefs to be allowed into the country and for the farmers who need seasonal pickers.

It's not the education level of the immigrant we're talking about but the perception of those who see them as a threat.
