First blood to Trump

Trump will be inaugurated in 16 days time. Ford has recognised this new era.

How will his Junta of advisors deal with the political world?

Will Trump continue to govern by twitter?

Will his erratic behaviour stop?

Will he be less muddled in his thinking?

What will happen to NATO and article 5?

Will the world survive his environmental policy - such that it is?

Will America be able to contain him?

Are you American, Ankers? I could perhaps understand your perspective if you were. Otherwise, I don't.

Many ordinary people in the UK feel left behind and ignored by modern politics and the politicians who neither understand or care about them. These people are the people in America who voted for Trump whom they see as a glimmer of hope that things might change for the better.

Let's face it we need a desperate change in this country. (And for the record I don't mean Corbyn).

Ankers Sat 21-Jan-17 09:04:13

Lets see.

My concern is that he may go too far with things, not that he wont be able to go far enough.

I sat and watched the excitement of the Trump supporters the night before the inauguration, and felt so sorry for them because many of the dreams they have cannot come true. Industries that have died will not be resurrected because the world has moved on and jobs have disappeared because of mechanisation. 'Taking back control' is a fine-sounding slogan - but what does it mean? Delusional was the word that came to my mind.

Are you American?

daphnedill "Even more reason why the UK should not be looking to increase trade with the US. It won't be for our mutual benefit. The US is a giant compared with the UK and any deal will be entirely one-sided, although I have no doubt a few UK 'fat cats' would benefit."

Brilliant, Trump takes care of the US. There have been complaints that as POTUS he won't 'fix' the US, maybe he will. No anti Trump rhetoric for his nominal role in UK policies.

daphnedill Sat 21-Jan-17 01:27:54

Jolly good, but I'm not a US taxpayer. Having said that, Donald Trump doesn't appear to be a US taxpayer either. shock

'Buying American' made Sam Walton. 'Buying American' is good for US taxpayers.

daphnedill Sat 21-Jan-17 00:38:35

Oh well! What's £4000 to a billionaire? wink

daphnedill Sat 21-Jan-17 00:37:44

Indeed! grin

With Liam Fox in charge of Overseas Trade and his history of...err...unorthodox dealings, I don't have a good feeling about this.

durhamjen Sat 21-Jan-17 00:36:37

Sorry, £17,000.

Did you hear about the jeweller whose diamond and gold sweepings from the floor were worth £13,000?
We'll need a few more of those to make up the losses.

daphnedill Sat 21-Jan-17 00:30:10

The UK currently has a trade surplus with the US - just about the only country we do have a surplus with. It's been hit recently as a result of the fall in sterling, but is still worth billions to the UK economy.

Much of the surplus comes from financial services, diamonds and pharmaceuticals.

HSBC has confirmed it's relocating 1000 jobs to Paris. Let's just hope not too many follow. The UK is going to be left with the lowly back-room jobs. The US would have no reason not to trade with Paris or Frankfurt.

The UK imports diamonds and cuts them before exporting them. In 2015, the trade was worth $2.1 billion to the UK, but it's declining and will fall further if sterling doesn't recover. Belgium already has its eyes on our market.

Pharmaceuticals include those manufactured by US companies in the UK. Some of them are exported to the US. The companies do that for tax reasons, but it looks as though Trump wants to repatriate the jobs. If he does, it will be a huge blow to the UK economy.

There is no doubt that 'Buying American' will affect the UK.

durhamjen Sat 21-Jan-17 00:08:14

Only two rules, one being buy American.
So bang goes May's idea of trading with America. They aren't going to buy anything we want to export.

durhamjen Fri 20-Jan-17 23:54:51

I don't think getting out of the car outside Trump Tower was showing Americans he was one of the people, either.

Talking about bears, Russia has minted some coins with "In Trump we Trust" printed on them!

trisher Fri 20-Jan-17 23:20:33

All mention of climate change has disappeared from the White House website, the new Education minister on Newsnight being questioned about guns in schools and saying that a school somewhere might have one to protect the school from bears! and things are just getting going. Whatever will come next?

durhamjen Fri 20-Jan-17 23:11:20

I hope he doesn't tweet about these.

Those concerned about climate change, look at this.

The irony, petra. You do realise what you've said?
Trump, the man who has $3.7 billion, is going to force the politicians in Washington to work for the people and not their bank accounts!
He could put his tax accounts online, like all the other presidents have done, just to show how honest he is, petra.
Of course he won't, will he, because he isn't.

TTIP is no longer featured on the Whitehouse website. Did some posters miss that or couldn't bring themselves to admit that he's done something good.

petra Fri 20-Jan-17 22:13:29

Did nobody see the series of programmes on BBC breakfast from America last week?
Some of the infrastructure was almost 3rd world, I'm not exaggerating.
America will be great again when they get jobs back from the world and his wife and Trump forces ( by fair means, or foul) the politicians in Washington to work for the people and not their bank accounts.

POGS Fri 20-Jan-17 21:34:37

' I think all people in his position should not use twitter. They should at least try to be more statesmanlike. They should at least think before they tweet.'

They all use twitter don't they?. Corbyn had his twitter account hacked recently.

David Cameron once said "Too many tweets might make a twat"
