Trump will be inaugurated in 16 days time. Ford has recognised this new era.

How will his Junta of advisors deal with the political world?

Will Trump continue to govern by twitter?

Will his erratic behaviour stop?

Will he be less muddled in his thinking?

What will happen to NATO and article 5?

Will the world survive his environmental policy - such that it is?

Will America be able to contain him?

Lewlew Mon 23-Jan-17 20:02:29

aggie He can make executive orders, but they have to be able to 'survive'. Having a Republican Congress helps him there. Sometimes there are issues which are sacred cows. I would think discrimination is one of them. Will this go to the Supreme Court? If so it goes beyond being just a Texas issue. Rinouchka?

Who else do you know who uses twitter a lot?
I know of people who use GN a lot shock

Is everyone here, shall I take the register?

aggie Mon 23-Jan-17 19:41:27

I was under the impression that anything the President did had to go through Congress ?????????

durhamjen Mon 23-Jan-17 19:36:13

I think her mistake was to post it on twitter.
Who else do you know who uses twitter a lot?

A woman who asked if anyone would be kind enough to assassinate Trump on twitter is being investigated by the secret service

There are some posters who were quoted on page 6, who have said much the same thing? Or worse?

Rinouchka Mon 23-Jan-17 19:14:39

durhamjen see the poster re Madonna on the other thread. They are serious about prosecuting her.
Trumpism= McCarthysm, only orange!

In reply to your query, whitewave, since 2011, there has been a long battle to repeal Texas' Voter Identification Law which is highly discriminatory against minorities. This was a long drawn out case which cost the state a huge amount of money and which the Republican majority sought to defend and keep, literally at all cost.

Then, last July, the US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an original decision that the law was, indeed, discriminatory.

Trump has just made sure that the old law remains. He has overriden, by executive order, and to the glee of Republican Texas, amendments to the old law which would have removed discriminatory elements.

He has the power....and he has the support of Republicans to use it.
This may be his way of thanking Texas for their electoral college votes....

Also on sky - Spicer - bizarre

durhamjen Mon 23-Jan-17 19:07:34

On News24, freeview 130, they are doing a series of Trump's first 100 days. It's on now. He might not be there at the end. I had a dream......

Ankers Mon 23-Jan-17 19:02:26

I am beginning to wonder whether it might have been like Brexit for some.

Voters were quite desperate to change the status quo of, in this case, Washington.

And someone was offering to do it.

It was clear years ago that Trump was a serial liar. How did he manage to fool so many Americans. Does truth no longer matter or do some people actually think if Trump says something enough times it must be true ?

whitewave Mon 23-Jan-17 18:02:15

Article in my paper today made interesting reading. It concerns the lies Trump is promoting.

Said Sean Spicer the press secretary's first appearance made himself a laughing stock with such obvious falsehoods. On social media there were images of Spicer declaring that Titanic had enjoyed a fabulous voyage and could not wait to return to Southampton.

On a more serious note it is noted that authoritarian figures like Trump often spread falsehoods, or at least try to make facts seem hazy. If a chunk of the population are not sure what's true, their willingness to fight back is weakened.
More darkly still, the authoritarian regards telling the population lies to be a test of strength.

Even more basically still, the authoritarian strongman crave control. If they can control what you believe then their power over you is total.

So, when a press secretary tells you a crowd went all the way to the Washington monument, when every witness and every photo says otherwise, this tells you what game the Trump administration intends to play.

Trump has signalled that he intends to break the norms associated with democratic societies. And he's done it on day one.

Forget to include this:

Have just received this from a Trumpista school friend whom I'd rather not know. Trumpistas are fiendish in their devotion. Jail Madonna! Now a cri de coeur. Senator McCarthy has returned in spirit.

Another claim is that the "sluts"who demonstrated left a mess in their wake and rats are proliferating in Washington DC. (They do not see the irony there!)

Devorgilla Mon 23-Jan-17 17:37:43

MawBroon, I love the cartoon. How do I send it to others?

whitewave Mon 23-Jan-17 17:33:28

rinouchka what does that mean and would he have jurisdiction in Texas. Total ignorance here!!

Rinouchka Mon 23-Jan-17 17:31:11

protest! Anger makes my fingers slippery.

Rinouchka Mon 23-Jan-17 17:30:36

I am not filing my US Federal Tax Returns this year either in protes, Lewlew

Worrying chat with friends in the US who have noted that Trump has also scuppered, by executive order, an Anti-Discrimination Bill in Texas that had already been approved. This is not being reported but I trust these friends to know what they are talking about.

Goodness knows what else is to come.

He may get his come-uppance here. Can I call him a liar, do you think?

trisher Mon 23-Jan-17 15:19:33

Trump comes in the door and taste goes out the window!

daphnedill Mon 23-Jan-17 14:46:22

I think somebody should tell him about King Midas.

Jalima Mon 23-Jan-17 14:40:45

Speaking of windows, I see he's thrown the curtains out of the Oval Office too and had gold ones installed.
