Government must have vote on Brexit

Supreme Court has ruled that Parliament must vote on whether the government can start the Brexit process.

This means Theresa May cannot begin talks with the EU until MPs and peers give their backing - although BBC says this is likely to happen in time for the government's 31st March deadline.

Howver, the court ruled the Scottish Parliament and Welsh and Northern Ireland assemblies did not need a say. Not sure why.

David Davis to make a statement to MPs at 12:30.

However wasn't British law, sovereignty largely what a Brexit was about and this is a judgement by the highest court in the land. As Theresa May was originally a remainer, do you think she's been secretly hoping this would happen?

Mair said "Jess is now making the false claim that I think:"
No Mair don't worry you don't think.

Mair Tue 31-Jan-17 18:52:43

"What are British values. I would love to know."

Being an autonomous democratic nation.

Ana Tue 31-Jan-17 18:52:36

Ask JessM, she seems to know all about British values and who holds them...

Mair Tue 31-Jan-17 18:51:17

"You have been an apologist for Mair and his values since you started posting Mair"

I certainly have NOT.
TTo suggest so is absolutly outrageous!

I do not know what his 'values' are, and none of us know a great deal about him but there isnt a shred of evidence that he was 'racist'.
His own mixed race half brother with whom he got on well defended him against this attack by the media.

The truth is it SUITS Bremain extremists to label him as 'racist' rather than accept that a working class person in the North of England had developed a violent hatred for a Labour MP who he perceived as not acting in his interests. He had probably voted for her!

That in no way excuses his vicious act however.

Nelliemoser Tue 31-Jan-17 18:50:55

Petra What are British values. I would love to know.

whitewave Tue 31-Jan-17 18:42:19

Examples rose?

petra Tue 31-Jan-17 18:41:11

jessM I think you will find that the reason most people voted to leave the eu was because they believe in British values.

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 18:41:05

On this thread it's all on your side!

whitewave Tue 31-Jan-17 18:39:19

What divisive language is that rose? Do I constantly talk about immigrants, or refugees , or tell you that you get over excited when talking about an African neighbour, or constantly mention people of colour (what!!!!!) - I could go on. It is constantly pointing out the "other" it is language of division, it is language of hate, it is language of strife.

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 18:37:33

Perhaps I really don't like unpleasant and bullying tactics employed by a group of you against a member that you don't like. The fact that you think it's quite all right to do it doesn't escape most Gransnetters. So full of the milk of human kindness aren't you?

Mair Tue 31-Jan-17 18:36:34

Jess is now making the false claim that I think:

"people who have signed the anti-Trump-State-Visit petition are members of some kind of global extremist plot?"

No I do not think them "members ... of a plot", but I do consider it an extremist demand, given that:

a) Many actual dictators have been granted a state visit
b) The relationship with the USA is and always has been vital to the national interest. It displays an extraordinary disregard, or ignorance of this fact of the realpolitiK.

In your case Jess, as youre a declared political activist, I doubt its a matter of ignorance of what you are doing.

Ana Tue 31-Jan-17 18:35:05

Ha, ha - as if you give a damn about the Queen's feelings, durhamjen! grin And of course it's not 'upsetting her', she's made of sterner stuff.

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 18:34:08

Once more a group of you .....always the same posters are being confrontational to drive a Gransnet member off the thread, so obvious and for all to see.

durhamjen Tue 31-Jan-17 18:32:55

Calm down, roses.

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 18:32:09

Divisive language!
Ye Gods ww the divisive language ( your fave phrase) is all on your side.

durhamjen Tue 31-Jan-17 18:31:55

Yes, Jess, only those who want Trump to come here have British values, didn't you realise that?

Although, if Trump and May really cared, they would cancel the state visit as it is upsetting the Queen.

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 18:30:41

Ah well, there are many posts on here which make me cringe. #playgroundcliques'r'us

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 18:29:23

Yes, it was factual roses.

You're a fine one to talk about what people can write in their posts! grin grin grin

Ana Tue 31-Jan-17 18:28:09

Yes, that 'what we see as British values' comment was really cringeworthy.

whitewave Tue 31-Jan-17 18:28:02

Divisive language mair and unnecessarily confrontational.

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 18:27:51

You have been an apologist for Mair and his values since you started posting Mair.

What do you think of Alexandre Bissonnette, the Quebec mosque murderer? Is he a misunderstood creature too?

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 18:26:13

No, not factual at all....did you not read the above post?and who are you Jess to decide who has British values and who does not and what they can put into their posts, the sheer arrogance!

Mair Tue 31-Jan-17 18:25:53

Roses said

dd you say the silence on the murders in the mosques in Quebec is deafening.....
where? It's in the news, have heard and seen reports several times on tv and radio
Did you mean on Gransnet? Start a thread then, this one is about Brexit

Quite Roses

And re the Mosque murder, the skin colour, "white,"and ethnic descent, "French Canandian", of the murderer has already been openly stated in our PC press. Can you imagine that being revealed at such an early stage in the case if he were brown or black?shock

JessM Tue 31-Jan-17 18:21:17

Not aggressive. Factual. Do report if you think I am transgressing Forum Guidelines.
If there are a number of GN members who find another member's posts abhorrent and lacking in what we see as British values then should we form an orderly queue and have a rota? So that only one person allowed to disagree with that member on any one day?
Those of us to whom you allude don't go around accusing people of being "far right" "extremist" etc
We leave name-calling to the member who thinks that all the ordinary decent people who have signed the anti-Trump-State-Visit petition are members of some kind of global extremist plot? All 1.7million of us.

whitewave Tue 31-Jan-17 18:18:41

Is there any doubt that he committed the murder?
