Government must have vote on Brexit

Supreme Court has ruled that Parliament must vote on whether the government can start the Brexit process.

This means Theresa May cannot begin talks with the EU until MPs and peers give their backing - although BBC says this is likely to happen in time for the government's 31st March deadline.

Howver, the court ruled the Scottish Parliament and Welsh and Northern Ireland assemblies did not need a say. Not sure why.

David Davis to make a statement to MPs at 12:30.

However wasn't British law, sovereignty largely what a Brexit was about and this is a judgement by the highest court in the land. As Theresa May was originally a remainer, do you think she's been secretly hoping this would happen?

grin Ana although I was feeling a tad smug.

Perhaps this thread has run its course. There have been some really interesting contributions, but it veered off course a bit, as threads do sometimes.

It looks like being a very late session tonight. Some good speeches today. Interesting what D.Davies said in response to P.Davies, 'I always take the view that people’s votes in this House are a matter for their own honour and their own beliefs.'

There was some concern in this thread about leaving Euratom, the agency established by treaty to ensure co-operation on nuclear matters, but DD said that we may be able to deal direct with the IAEA. I hope so.

Questioned about funding for research he said they hope to create a mechanism that will allow the research to go on. Mmm!

Interesting speeches from both sides, but you can read them in Hansard if you missed them. OMG, I'm just screeching at the screen at Nigel Adams (Con. Selby & Ainsty) Off to watch Docherty-Hughes (SNP Dunbarton West).

Shall we see what tomorrow's news says and discuss it on a new thread?

My post was of course to durhamjen, although you would know that roses.

Yes, it's going ahead despite the best efforts of the Remain camp to go against the democratic vote.

She said, smugly...[yuk]

Too late.....we are on the way to leaving now ( yippeee.)

That's what makes it a good union to belong to.

They all agree on all sensible things!

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 21:55:53

I don't know about this Welshwife or why he is appointing somebody who is bragging ( though I assume not openly!) about the EU. I think the chances of all the 27
Countries managing to agree about almost anything for the future is slim.

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 21:50:11

You're right to rise above pathetric attacks whitewave.

Welshwife Tue 31-Jan-17 19:32:06

Any time it has been mooted it has been kicked into the long grass - of course there will still be 27 countries which can have a vote on the matter. It is due to the position Trump seems to be taking against Europe and the apparent wish of Russia to break up the Union which sparked this off.
Don't you think it is a bit off to say the least for another country to try interfering like this? Trump is it seems appointing an ambassador to the EU who is very anti EU and already bragging he will break up the Union.

mair I have just seen your last post to me.

I shall let it speak for itself

Sorry, varian, but I never drink tea.

British values have been lost sight of by some on GN

Try thinking about -

Tolerence
Fairness
Respect for the law of the land and for others
Co-operation
Compassion

and a nice cup of tea

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 19:07:44

It looks like the EU is now showing it's true colours with that remark Welshwife as it is what they have wanted for a long time.

Mair Tue 31-Jan-17 19:06:15

WW said
Do I constantly talk about immigrants, or refugees , or tell you that you get over excited when talking about an African neighbour, or constantly mention people of colour (what!!!!!)

YES you do constantly talk about refugees and immigrants as we all do when its relevant! Its a big political topic at present.

You certainly deserved sarcasm for your comments about your African neighbor, it was one of the most gauche cringe worthy posts Ive ever seen. blushblushblush
And its hardly as if youre a shrinking violet WW! I think you can cope.

I dont think Ive even used the term 'people of colour', not that it would matter if I did!
Youre just looking for excuses to complain.

LaraGransnet is targeted bullying of one poster allowed as well because that is what is happening here.

, when he murdered her he said it was for Britain and when asked his name in court he said - death to traitors freedom for Britain

Welshwife Tue 31-Jan-17 19:01:52

I saw Guy Verhofstad last night on Newsnight and was very surprised to hear him say about closer political union of states etc - first time I have seen him say that. It is a thing which may well not get very far as Junker dismissed the idea as not being what most people wanted a few months ago.
Not having to join such a coalition was one of the things David Cameron got an agreement on when he negotiated his deal - plus not joining the Euro and also different rules for migrants to UK. Once the vote was held the agreement ceased to exist.

Hear hear!

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 31-Jan-17 18:59:38

Hello, us again. As you all know, arguments and opposing views are very welcome. But please try and keep things vaguely civil.

Ana Tue 31-Jan-17 18:56:49

Pardon? Did you really say that Nelliemoser?
