The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

Eloethan had never been 'under attack' when she decided to ferret out a list of all those who had made a comment on an old thread.
Let us be honest on here once and for all, some left wing posters constantly deride anybody who posts a comment they don't like and brand anybody who disagrees as right wing or even extreme right wing.If they chose to stick to being remotely civil, they would never get uncivil answers back at them, ever and the political threads would still be interesting/ hotly debated etc.Just the same for Brexit, those of us who were Leavers had every insult under the sun thrown at us, for sure we threw some back , but only because we are not doormats. It should stop and the forum would be a better place for it.So, I throw out a challenge, I will agree to be civil in disagreement at all times......will you?

I love those baby books ( maybe not that one Rinouchka) grin
How about 'That's Not My Leader Of The Opposition' ( his questions are too weak)
Or 'That's Not My Foreign Secretary' ( his suit doesn't fit ) or 'That's Not My SNP Leader' ( his face is too smug.)
Am sure that posters will find a host of other book titles. It may give the thread some light relief.

Charming, whitewave. And rather a gross thing to say, don't you think?

Iam64 Wed 01-Feb-17 13:47:40

pogs, my thanks had nothing to do with knowing the names of posters who had voted Tory in the past. i appreciated yet again, Eloethan's ability to be clear and dare I say calm when responding to a number of what I saw as rather unpleasant attacks by people who self identify as right wing against those the see as left wing.
I enjoy the political discussions but there is a tendency from some to make unnecessarily nasty comments to those the perceive as having different views to themselves. I don't confine that grumble to either 'side' of the discussion. We can and must disagree because that's healthy debate but I find it tedious when rudeness takes over

whitewave Wed 01-Feb-17 13:45:55

Humour lobotomy ana ?

rosesarered Wed 01-Feb-17 13:45:19

POGS yes, I found the 'thanking' of Eloethan for her little list a bit bizarre....now I have the Mikado song as an ear worm ( haha)

whitewave Wed 01-Feb-17 13:44:28

rinouchka grin we could have a whole series.

Ana Wed 01-Feb-17 13:41:55

Rinouchka, yes very funny but as I'm not American it doesn't really resonate with me.

POGS Wed 01-Feb-17 13:39:00

"Thanks again Eloethan for your posts and especially for the one at 00.14"

May I ask why?

Again a post that concentrates on knowing who votes Tory or is 'percieved' to vote Tory.

If somebody thanks somebody for a specific piece of information then they must have a reason for being grateful and I wonder what that significance of knowing who voted Tory means to that person, especially given the manner the list was compiled by Eloethan.

Rinouchka Wed 01-Feb-17 13:36:37

To all grannies who know this series of baby books, I offer the latest:

POGS Wed 01-Feb-17 13:31:54

MaizieD Wed 01-Feb-17 00:41:18

"Oh dear, roses. Looking at your post at 23.01 and then Eloethan's of 00.14.

Had you forgotten that you were a Tory voter? You certainly don't keep quiet and neither do some of the other names on Eloethan's list."

Why should Tory voters 'KEEP QUIET'.

I think a lot do if only 10 posters can be found who voted Conservative on GN. They probably have the sense not to put themselves up for condemnation and choose to 'KEEP QUIET'.

As for your 'Oh dear roses ' I have noted this form of mockery is being used by the same posters quite regularly, along with the 'Leaving the play ground' comment. Each to his own I guess.

POGS Wed 01-Feb-17 13:16:34

Eloethan Wed 01-Feb-17 00:14:39

I just looked back at the thread rosesarered. It is entitled "Do some Tory voters now regret their decision?" - dated 10 May 2015.

There were 10 posters: you, Merlotgran, Kettylester, Mollie65, Charleygirl, harrigran, Ceesnan, nigglynellie and POGS - all indicating they definitely did not regret voting Tory. Several did not specifically disclose their votes but their responses indicated they too were pleased about the result. Most of you continue to post on Gransnet.

Yes I am quite happy to say I voted Conservative in 2010 and 2015. I have voted Labour in the past too.

Unlike those GN posters who have 'proudly' stated they are/were ACTIVISTS for Labour or other left wing parties (sometimes it has been difficult to establish as they promote one party one week and another the next it has felt at times) I am neither an ACTIVIST nor even a MEMBER of any Political Party.

I feel very sorry for those of a political persuasion who believe anybody who does not 'vote in accordance with their political persuasion' has sufficient information about that person to make personal attacks. For example it is often said on GN, indeed on a thread recently, the 'Tories are Hated'. They certainly are on Gransnet by certain posters but best not to rise to such rhetoric and give the 'hatred'
more oxygen.

I will do as I do at every General Election and watch and listen to all candidates and make my decision as to whom I think the better candidate.

I will also admit so far under Corbyn's Leadership I would not vote for Labour in 2020 or in a snap General Election. Under his Leadership I see nothing more than a party of protest, e.petitions and talking to it's membership not the people of the country.

If that makes me a 'hated Tory ' so be it but I don't feel I should shy away from debating nor commentating on GN because I have different political views.

I actually believe each party has something to pick good and bad points from, I don't feel I am brainwashed into believing any party has all the right answers. Actually I did think that way moons ago being brought up by a staunch Labour Trade Unionist father but we both saw the light in the 70's and since then I go with my head and my gut and try not to be inward thinking but consider which party will run the country best, In my opinion.

Aren't we lucky not to live under a dictatorship or communist rule but allowed the freedom to make our own choice at the ballot box.

nigglynellie Wed 01-Feb-17 10:52:05

Oh dear, being on a list sounds a bit sinister!!! Not sure that I'm too happy about that! Better leave these threads before it's too late!!! Eeeek!

rosesarered Wed 01-Feb-17 10:50:51

Beam grin

rosesarered Wed 01-Feb-17 10:49:18

No, why on earth would I go to any meetings ( with the Greens....are you 'aving a laff?) Penstemmon, in any case I am not a member just a voter.
I have a number of friends some from every political party, and of the Lib Dem ones, we are a mixed lot ww so your ( yet again!) derisive post of 10.08.57 does not even make sense.
People who vote Labour are also very mixed as we know ,as are the politicians themselves ( I almost voted for Tony Blair) .
I live in a ward that always ( at least for a long time) always returns the Conservative MP, and I hoped that the power sharing would continue ( 2015 GE)
They cannot continue counting on my vote with that arse Tim Farron at the helm.Am hoping he will be gone in a year or two.

PoW speech on the importance of reaching across faith boundaries has been obliquely linked to Trumps ban.

whitewave Wed 01-Feb-17 10:44:35

Mays feeble response to the ban risks alienating British Muslims a leading Muslim Tory MP warned. Another Muslim MP warned that if she (May) continues to be so limp wrist
She risks losing the trust of an entire generation of young Muslims.

She is still facing a revolt in Parliament against the proposed visit. Rudd admitted that Trump ban was in danger of increasing the risk from a terrorist attack - we know that Isis sees the ban as a gift from God.

Tusk agrees with Rudd.

whitewave Wed 01-Feb-17 10:38:58

Opposition to the ban continuing, with some of Americas most successful business executives including Amazonia pledging to fight against the DIVISIVE executive order.

Penstemmon Wed 01-Feb-17 10:29:37

Compass is not about an alliance in Government it is aboutvfinding common ground to fight the bigger opposition.

Ankers Wed 01-Feb-17 10:27:37

It's just been said on the news that there haven't been any attacks by foreigners on American soil since 9/11. So why change the system?

Prevention.
And I dont think americans will get over 9/11 in decades and we wouldnt expect them to.

I think also, they take great pride in their armed forces, and trying to keep themselves safe.

Whether they go about it the right way though, is obviously hugely controversial.

Ankers Wed 01-Feb-17 10:24:53

daphnedill - you appear to be the only gransnet poster left who still uses the term Little Englander with regularity.

I presume you are not english or british and that means that you are being racist and xenophobic.

Beammeupscottie Wed 01-Feb-17 10:13:27

The only place to where Corbyn is leading his Party is up shit creek without a paddle, with Abbot and Thornberry as ballast.

whitewave Wed 01-Feb-17 10:08:57

rose you are probably the most extreme right lib dem voter that they have ever had -evergrin They would be astounded to read your posts and then realise that they could count on your vote.

Anniebach Wed 01-Feb-17 10:08:17

Beam, he thinks the party is an effective opposition and he will lead the party at the next election !

Beammeupscottie Wed 01-Feb-17 10:06:37

Like DJ, I am concerned about Russian expansion into Ukraine and that Putin will take advantage of Trump's lack of interest in international affairs. Incidentally, Putin rode in the State Coach with the Queen; she worn her default look of mild boredom!
