The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

durhamjen Mon 30-Jan-17 22:56:05

I love the sign that says 'Build a wall around Trump!'

Chewbacca Mon 30-Jan-17 22:52:12

Just found this on Fox News: "Trump signed an executive order Friday suspending refugee admissions and immigration from seven terror-prone countries including Syria and Yemen. Critics of Trump’s executive action have noted that Saudi Arabia – where many 9/11 terrorists were from – wasn’t included on the list of countries subject to restrictions. However, the administration has noted that the list was actually drawn up by the Obama administration."

Anyone else seen/heard anything to suggest that Obama had the list already drawn up? I found this on Foxnews.com

Amazed at all the corporations who gave come out against Trumps actions

durhamjen Mon 30-Jan-17 22:23:48

1.5 million+ votes now. That's more than 3.5% of those on the voting register. Not bad for a few days.
Heard that even Amazon is talking about taking him to court. I'd love to see that.
Do we really want him here?

IDSgrin

Anniebach Mon 30-Jan-17 22:12:25

Grave constitutional crisis? IDS said this .

I don't think parliment is about to become paralysed

Chewbacca Mon 30-Jan-17 22:11:38

Wouldn't have thought so Ana !

Ana Mon 30-Jan-17 21:57:51

Are we 'in grave constitutional crisis'? confused

Chewbacca Mon 30-Jan-17 21:55:46

"While the overwhelming majority of the Queen's prerogative powers are devolved to her ministers, there is one exception that allows her to wield power herself. Only "in grave constitutional crisis," the Sovereign can "act contrary to or without Ministerial advice." With no precedent in modern times, it's not clear what would actually constitute this, but the possibility remains." Wonder if she will this time?

Ana Mon 30-Jan-17 21:49:39

She had obviously approved it before TM issued it.

She can hardly withdraw it now, and I doubt whether it would cross her mind to do so.

MaizieD Mon 30-Jan-17 21:47:02

Sorry, getting confused with these threads. I posted the Huffington Post article on the 'Vote on A50' thread (of all places grin)

whitewave Mon 30-Jan-17 21:46:03

Well I'm not sure on that one maizie but I would imagine she'd be on a bit of a sticky wicket if she went against the government.

MaizieD Mon 30-Jan-17 21:44:05

But, WW, according to the World at One and the Huffington Post story I linked to earlier, the Queen has to approve the invitations. The big questions for me are 'Does she?' (have to approve them) and, 'Has she?' (approved this one)

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 21:39:24

Of course she won't ( anyway) nor would she have been chuffed to meet many, many other world leaders in the past. But she will do it and smile, being the Queen....it's all about duty.

whitewave Mon 30-Jan-17 21:37:44

It is only the Government and Prime Minister who issues these invitations.

MaizieD Mon 30-Jan-17 21:36:04

The plot thickens as to just who authorised that State visit invitation.

From the Financial Times:

There were also conflicting accounts of who had suggested the Queen extend the invitation for a state visit to Mr Trump. On Monday, a government spokesman distanced Mrs May from the decision, saying that such invitations were proposed by a previously obscure group called the state visit committee, which includes private secretaries to the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William.
Insiders say this provoked anger from Buckingham Palace, and Mrs May later was forced to clarify, acknowledging during an evening press conference in Dublin, “I issued the invitation” and “that invitation stands”

(I got the link from twitter; it worked for me but not sure if it will survive being copied & pasted)

Looks as though possibly the Queen might not be too chuffed at the thought of having to entertain the Orange One

annodomini Mon 30-Jan-17 21:34:47

True, grannypiper, it is also true that she is the first Queen Elizabeth of the UK, so, strictly speaking, she is Elizabeth I.

grannypiper Mon 30-Jan-17 21:14:54

Jalima HM is the first Queen Elizabeth Scotland has ever had.

"You haven't said what you do really get in a rage over, though. Just writing on here isn't enough.
What do you get in a rage over? Simple question.
You can't get in a rage over thinking that people don't do what you think they should, when you do not know what else they do."

I have given you my answer, I don't get in a 'rage' and produced a comprehensive list of things that 'upset' me.

Ironically you have proved my last sentence was accurate.

Will you ever stop trying to bait certain posters?.

I will leave you to get on with your 'rage' 'rant' whatever it is you are doing.

Guaranteed to out-rude the Chinese anyway, those who are charged with arranging the Trump state visit. Of course the cost of policing will be astronomical if he starts demanding coaches on the Mall. Only possible way to go would be chopper into and out of the Buck House helipad I'd think.

petra Mon 30-Jan-17 20:27:38

durhamjen Their country, their rules. As someone who has been turned away at 2 borders, Serbia and Romania ( before they joined the European) you have to accept it.

Ana Mon 30-Jan-17 20:25:07

Oh, Chewbacca, don't get durhamjen started again about 'lying'...
