Re hand holding - it's supposed to be very telling as the one with hand on top is in charge.....

Why doesn't Starmer hold another referendum?
The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?
Re hand holding - it's supposed to be very telling as the one with hand on top is in charge.....
Jalima I think a narcissist like Trump is probably completely impervious to subtle royal put downs.
I have no doubt that she would behave impeccably and do her best to help the Trumps maintain protocol. (Just like she did when the band started playing when Obama was half way through his royal toast
)
Protocol of course includes don't touch the Queen - even if you do think you are going to fall over.

Does anyone else think it weird that Homeland is on TV now, and the Homeland Security Secretary gets mentioned on the news?
Haven't watched Homeland yet, but assume there are similarities.
853,000+
Next weekend would be better. I don't even know if I can teach my grandson tomorrow afternoon. Depends on how I feel in the morning. Don't want to give him this virus back, but as his dad's got it, it probably doesn't matter. Haven't heard from his dad today, so he'll probably be off work again tomorrow. What matters is whether I can stay awake.
Can't go and stand among crowds yet. I'll watch it on the news, though.
Do you actually live in Newcastle? My other son might be there. He lives in Sunderland and can get there easily on the Metro. Have to contact him tomorrow. He has lots of international friends, and his ex-wife has an American mother.
There's a demo tomorrow (Monday) in Newcastle, dj 5.30 at the Monument, Grey St. I thought of going but the time is completely wrong for me.
840,000+ at the moment. Impossible to reach a million by midnight, but I expect it to be over that in the morning when I wake up. At one time it was over a thousand a minute, and now it's only 52,000 an hour.

Can you imagine having to think about this when you land in a new country? Just because the new leader has changed the law while you were travelling?
What sort of countries does that happen in?
Democracies or dictatorships?
Mo Farah has been told he can go back to the USA. If I were him, I would immediately start making arrangements to take my family out of the USA.
Do you think the Queen will ask Melania about her architectural studies? If she gets the chance of course.
There's a demo in York, St Helen's Square.
All the same time, 6.00 pm.
The list of speakers at Downing Street looks amazing.
Like that Australian Prime Minister
Even Michelle Obama did that, but the Queen did likewise so it looked like an acceptance that protocol didn't matter on that occasion.
although Jalima, it's just the thought of him putting his hand where he wants - in a proprietorial way, of course.
I wonder how Philip's right hook is

On the other hand, it could get him locked up in the Tower for four years.
Not a royalist, you understand, but she could be my mother, or mother in law. It makes me cringe.
By the way, Trump signed the order on Holocaust Memorial Day. No sense of irony, then.
Whitewave, there's a demo against Trump in Brighton tomorrow at 6 p.m. outside the town hall.
Same outside Downing Street for those in London.

Sadiq Khan doesn't want him in London, and he will boycott anything involving Trump if he does come.
800,000+ signatures now. Amazing how quickly it goes up when it's on facebook.
I wonder if anyone with that on their facebook page would be kept out of the USA.
I am uncertain about the State Visit.
He is so looking forward to this as the ultimate accolade, yes.
However, HM is so good at putting people in their place I am sure she will manage to wrong-foot him and have him quailing, squirming and backtracking before he knows what has hit him.
In the most polite and courteous way of course.
793,000+ now. And going up very fast.
I think, Chewbacca, that it seems to be the will of the people that our Queen doesn't have to meet Trump. Is that a better reason for not inviting him to?

Comparison between what Trump has done, and what Obama and Carter did.
Anyone who thinks they are similar is not thinking clearly.
775,000+ signatures now. It still could be a million by midnight.
Apparently Trump has changed his mind on British citizens. They can go to the US - if they want to.
He appears to be backtracking by the minute.
Unfortunately he can't do that with nuclear missiles.
I am sure you are right, but why should we extend the privilege of our hospitality to a man who has acted so outrageously, inhumanely, and according to several US governors, lawyers and politicians, illegally and without discussion even with the Republican Party ?
I think the visit should at least be put on hold while outrage at his high handed action echoes around the world.
overwhelming criticism from throughout the world - Trump appears to be trying to sound more conciliatory.
For the record, HM has, during her reign, met and greeted: President Bashar al-Assad; Mobutu Sese Seko; Robert Mugabe; Xi Jinping; King Hamad al-Khalifa of Bahrain; King Mswati III; Vladimir Putin and Nicolae Ceausescu, to name just a few. I reckon she'll be just fine with Trump!
I am not worried at all about the Queen!
I do not think we should offer state visits to any heads of states who have ideologies and promote values that oppose core human rights. By feting them it appears to condone their ideas and policies. Meet with approriate politicians/ civil servants , have the discussions but keep relationships and 'welcome' cool.
.....this man trump is very good at dividing people, isn't he?
Haven't noticed you being unduly concerned about the Queen's sensibilities before, durhamjen. Just quoting from the petition header isn't really convincing.
....and before anyone says 'but he is awful' yes he is, and the Queen has hosted state visits from other awful people, even worse, and some of them not half as Anglophile as Trump.
