The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

What is intended rin?

Rinouchka Sun 05-Feb-17 20:29:29

He will only access a second term if his first one is deemed successful by the majority of Americans.
Considering the furore that each of his moves is unleashing, that seems improbable.

Amongst the many directives he is issuing, one that creates much worry is the threat in certain Republican states to curb anti-Trump protests. That is one to watch and to cause more concern.

I actually think thatbags that those who want Obama back kind of know he can't come back but are making a statement

thatbags Sun 05-Feb-17 20:03:12

Heads in the clouds. He can't come back. Two terms as president is the max.

durhamjen Sun 05-Feb-17 19:46:34

52% want Obama back!

durhamjen Sun 05-Feb-17 19:45:19

That smile, Jalima!

durhamjen Sun 05-Feb-17 19:44:19

Only 48% of the American public say they would be opposed to his impeachment. That's after two weeks!

Jalima Sun 05-Feb-17 19:38:22

I can see it now - Buckingham Palace, golden lasers lighting it up, crowds cheering

And now the other side is feeling the despair. Maybe some good will come of it all after all.

thatbags Sun 05-Feb-17 19:35:58

Exactly, ww.

Despair.

thatbags Sun 05-Feb-17 19:35:30

Many people who voted for Brexit and Trump would not be classified as the "left behinds" but the point is without the "left behinds" vote neither would have won

This is what some of us have been trying to make clear, ww. It's the left behinds that swung it because they felt left behind by status quo politics.

whitewave Sun 05-Feb-17 19:35:17

Exactly bags they are voting sometimes out of despair that nothing will change otherwise

durhamjen Sun 05-Feb-17 19:34:46

He may be a political outsider, but he is part of the elite.
Apparently he doesn't want to see our politicians, just the Queen. Must have seen her gold carriage.

thatbags Sun 05-Feb-17 19:33:01

No, but it might feel like a good move when the alternative is same old same old which is how I think many Trump voters saw it.

Whether they were right remains to be seen, but I think they were voting against the status quo which is what Clinton represented.

rosesarered Sun 05-Feb-17 19:32:44

There is no option to wait and see though...he is the President and that's it.

I remember so many saying on the Republican side that all would be different when he bacame president. Perhaps that is what they were banking on. Wait and see-ery isn't always a good move.

thatbags Sun 05-Feb-17 19:30:10

I don't think people (Trump supporters generally) see Trump as part of the political elite that they feel has failed them. That's why they voted for him. Clinton they did see as part of the political elite. Trump's a political outsider.

rosesarered Sun 05-Feb-17 19:27:41

I certainly don't feel forgotten/ ignored/excluded/undermined though and I voted to leave the EU so did half of my family and friends. There are lots of reasons people voted for Brexit.
Voting for Trump was probably complex as well, and I think he only did so well because of the antipathy to Clinton.

thatbags Sun 05-Feb-17 19:27:27

I wonder why the Trumpregretters didn't find him embarassing before they voted for him?

thatbags Sun 05-Feb-17 19:26:31

iam, I don't see Nick Cohen as unhinged either. As I've already said, he's a very good writer. It's just that one or two things of his I've read recently have struck me as a bit OTT in intensity. Just a personal feeling. It may even pass.

And no, I can't remember what the things I found OTT were about now.

Penstemmon Sun 05-Feb-17 19:13:30

Almost half of the US vote was anti-Trump almost half the British EU referendum was for remaining. Not a small minority. That is a pretty divided picture!

durhamjen Sun 05-Feb-17 19:10:22

For those who think Trump and Brexit are not the same, someone said, "What will we leave for our children and grandchildren?" when talking about waterways. Concern for the climate in both countries.

durhamjen Sun 05-Feb-17 19:07:05

Lots of the Trumpregrets tweets are saying the same, he's embarrassing them, he needs to start acting like a president, you are losing support, you look like a fool.

He needs to start acting like a statesman, not a businessman and a bully. That word came up quite a lot, too.
