The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

nigglynellie Sat 04-Feb-17 18:11:54

However, Henry V111th always regretted beheading Cromwell. A lesson there maybe?!!
The marriage is now in trouble?! Presumably people in the know are peddling this?!!

I have heard over the past few days justification of Trump's visit by people saying that we didn't object when the Chinese prime minister came. We did. There were massive crowds. People just have selective memories.
I'm not sure that posters said we didn't object or had forgotten that, just that the Chinese and others (eg Ceaușescu) came on State Visits and HM had to get on with it and keep smiling (that smile reserved for those occasions).
It's diplomacy, like it or not. Although why we had to be diplomatic towards Ceaușescu I don't know.

I would rather they came for a State Visit than we threatened war on them in the South China sea like Bannon is doing.

I had seen that Rinouchka but thought it was false news.

Note to Trump: as you sow so shall you reap.

Jalima Sat 04-Feb-17 18:03:03

I was going off piste a bit! or whatabouting if that is what it is termed as.

(She looked at him very adoringly and proudly when he was taking the Presidential oath - I suppose she couldn't really glare).

Rinouchka Sat 04-Feb-17 18:00:25

Actually, Jalima, there are rumours re the Donald/Melania marriage. So your point may be prescient.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 04-Feb-17 17:59:27

Love it Rinouchka and I actually read 'if' - brains hey!

Yes, yes WW

Thank you for the link Rinouchka - wondering if I can find a play-it-again for the programme.

Love that too Jalima - everyone firing on all cylinders I see grin

Bye Niggly

Back to the Saturday evening glass of wine for you all (if that is what is keeping you going wink

Oh! God I'm thick??!!

Steve Bannon, describing himself as being like a Thomas Cromwell to Trump
The skilful way in which Cromwell took care of the divorce of Catherine of Aragon therefore allowing Henry to marry Anne Boleyn certainly won him favour with Henry. He became the king’s Principal Secretary

It was just an aside and, as Rinouchka pointed out, look how Cromwell ended up. However, Henry VIII carried on being King for another seven years after he beheaded Cromwell hmm

nigglynellie Sat 04-Feb-17 17:46:05

No dj, stop hypocrisy is more my soap box. I don't expect to see you joining any time soon!

whitewave Sat 04-Feb-17 17:38:41

What's that about ja?

Jalima Sat 04-Feb-17 17:35:48

Is he facilitating yet another divorce for Trump?

Rinouchka Sat 04-Feb-17 17:33:47

Sorry to have missed the interview with Gove but I found this article on same theme i formative:

https//nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/02/what-it-means-that-bannon-sees-himself-as-thomas-cromwell.html

whitewave Sat 04-Feb-17 17:23:29

No! I bet it was that news thing where 4 people sit around and talk politics. Missed that bum! But yes I think Bannon Is feeding Trump as he is certainly not bright enough to have a strategic forward plan - you only have to listen to him to know that.

Rinouchka Sat 04-Feb-17 17:22:15

If. Too quick!

Rinouchka Sat 04-Feb-17 17:21:43

Wow, GracesGran. I wonder is Steve Bannon knows how Thomas Cromwell ended up?

GracesGranMK2 Sat 04-Feb-17 17:12:21

WW did you see Gove being interviewed today. I feel he is a better journalist than politician. If you did (I am sorry this is a bit circuitous) he was talking about someone, and I think it was Steve Bannon, describing himself as being like a Thomas Cromwell to Trump. When the interviewer said that would make Trump a king Gove didn't gainsay him. The others round the table looked as if their jaws would hit the floor as they suddenly realised how Trump sees things. They did comment that if this was true he was more like Henry VIII than Elizabeth II. (I should have been listening more carefully - sorry)

ankers they don't live in NZ normally, but are considering purchasing land to build bunkers etc. Apparently those suppliers of these bunkers have seen the biggest rise in enquiries ever,

Out with spade then. Anyone remember the instructions from the 50s and 60s?

GracesGranMK2 Sat 04-Feb-17 17:03:34

You've answered a question for me Rigby - thankyou. I lurk on MN to read the Archers threads but occasionally get led astray by interesting titles and read those too and I have come across about a comment regarding whataboutery and didn't know what it was. What a really useful word it will be - it is certainly a well used technique by some on GN.

I have read that some billionaires have been prepping in New Zealand.

durhamjen Sat 04-Feb-17 16:57:46

Niggly, I hadn't realised that you were a member of the StoptheWar Coalition.
Welcome.

This is interesting. Do you think Trump will try and get out of this one?

Rinouchka Sat 04-Feb-17 15:13:33

A most disturbing image of cabalistic grannies springs to mind, Rigby46.
I , for one, never envisaged it when I joined GN.

whitewave Sat 04-Feb-17 15:11:57

In my view Steve Bannon is the one who should receive much closer attention. Apparently he is the closest to Trump and is the driver for all Trumps actions. The biggest worry as far as the rest of the world is concerned is the k owledge that Bannons belief that war is inevitable and indeed desirable as he sees war as the opportunity to change the world order to Americas advantage. He has written that war in the South China seas is desirable as is it inevitable in the Middle East.

Rigby46 Sat 04-Feb-17 14:43:47

*Where were/are the protesters when Victor Oban, the president of Hungary said he wanted to build a wall and that "muslims were poison that Hungary wouldn't swallow"
And the same applies to president Robert Fico, president of Slovakia who said " muslims have no place in his country and we need to monitor all muslims"
That's ok though? Mustn't criticise anything in the eu.*

On MN this technique is known as 'whataboutery' and is used in general by posters who cannot or do not want to address the actual issues bring debated and hope to derail the thread. It is well used on GN by a certain group of posters
