Blow the wind southerly is an English folk song which comes from Nothumberland. Kathleen Ferrier sang it beautifully, such a tragedy her life was cut so short.
I remember reading Guy Mannering for A level literature, along with Chaucer (not the rude bits!) Shakespeare, Middlemarch and I think The Tennent of Wildfell Hall. It's so long ago my memory is slightly hazy!!

No Burns ( that I remember) but certainly Scottish songs, Speed Bonnie boat,Mari's wedding, and Loch Lomond( by yon bonnie banks) and is Blow the wind Southerly a Scottish song?we also did Scottish dancing.

We did sing a lot of Scottish songs at school, primary and high school - a choir of English girls warbling 'Speed Bonnie Boat' and 'My Love is Like a Red Red Rose' etc
We read Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson (but not much Burns, sorry) at school in England

When I did Higher English, it is true that most of the literature we covered was by English authors - including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, Alexander Pope, Jane Austen, the Brontes, Thackery, Dickens, etc, and a lot of poets from Palgrave's Golden Treasury.

But we also read a lot of Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, etc.

Hardly anything from the 20th century.

It does roses! Possibly because that and English Literature were the only subjects I personally showed any aptitude for!! Everything else did and still does remain a mystery!!!

They had mostly German spouses mainly because very few other countries were protestant. Look at the problems that being Roman Catholic caused Henrietta Maria (Chas 1), Catherine of Braganza (Chas 2) and Mary of Modena (Jas 2).

And, of course, being divided into lots of independent countries the Germanic states provided a wide choice of suitably 'royal' potential spouses.

From James V1th/1st daughter Elizabeth's marriage too Frederick of Bohemia, the royal family had until George V1th consistently had German spouses. Prince Phillip is actually partly German so their German credentials are still pretty prominent!
The Tudor claim was very tenuous, coming as it did though Margaret Beaufort granddaughter of John of Gaunt son of Edward 111! The Beauforts were illegitimate but later legitimized, but unable to inherit the throne! A point presumably forgotten by Henry V11th!!

If retired people emigrate to Scotland will their pension be pegged at the level it is when they leave the (rest of the) UK just as it is if someone emigrates to Australia, New Zealand etc?
