English Scots for YES

Just imagine Brexiteers response if Brussels had said that UK could not have a referendum - that's how some Scots feel now that Westminster has said they can't have one.
Well, if that is how they feel they don't have a lot of common sense do they, as the situation is different.
We were not part of the United States of Europe.

I wouldn't say they are insane. I know SNP supporters who are definitely sane, as I think Granny23 seems to be.

I just believe they are seriously misguided and some of the more fanatical supporters have been whipped into an emotional frenzy and can appear obsessed by the "cause", totally blind to any logical argument.

Well, if you say so, but I would have thought that waiting to see exactly how brexit pans out before having a referendum asking people what their preference is is surely sensible however nationalistic your sentiments. Or could it be that the concern is that the Scots may prefer what is on offer rather than independence, joining the EU, at some stage, maybe, with what conditions? having the euro as currency, (all new members since 1999 have had to embrace it as their currency) and the uncertainties all this would bring.

nellie Insanity is a rather strong accusation. They have an ideal and a goal and are working hard to make it a reality. That is is not everyone's ideal or everyone's goal doesn't make it madness for them to be pursuing what they belive in. And don't forget that polarisation against people's dreams makes for martyrs, which makes the objective seem even more worth fighting for.

Not for the first time are the Tories and Nats helping each other. Working on the maxim of "my enemy's enemy is my friend" Cameron bent over backwards to help the SNP in 2014.

They returned the favour in 2015 when Sturgeon boasted how they would "work with Labour to lock the Tories out of Downing Street forever", thereby scaring enough English voters to desert the LibDems for the Tories to give them an outright majority. If that hadn't happened there would have been no EU referendum, no Brexit, no excuse for the Nats to repeat their demands.

Am wondering if some people think that the EU is made up of all powerful Gods.
Why on earth would the EU have any say in whether any country had a referendum to decide to stay in or come out? It is nothing like the question of allowing another referendum on independence for Scotland.

In other words, Brussels have no legal input into any referendum held in any EU country although I'm sure they'd like to, in fact I think very like them banned!

Suzied, Brussels can say what the like on that subject, but legally they have no say whatsoever in any shape or form as to when the UK has a referendum, or any other country come to that.

Best not to make the same mistake again. If Scotland leaves the UK which would automatically mean leaving the EU, heaven only knows what the way forward would be for the beleaguered Scots.

Just shows the difference between the union of Scotland - England and the union between EU countries.

Incidentally, Brussels doesn't have to give permission for the UK to have a referendum, so that comment was irrelevant. Westminster does have to give permission for a referendum in Scotland which they did (once in a generation!) three years ago!

Though I think that Scottish Referendum on Independence is not helpful to Theresa May it is a matter for the Scottish Parliament in which Westminster must not dictate. Thanks to Brexit the "Precious Union" which TM says she is protecting has been severely battered. They should also allow the People of Ulster a referendum on whether or not they want a United Ireland. Anything which helps to derail Brexit is a good thing.

As for the "Will of the People" remember Barabus and Jesus, that is just one example of what a flawed concept it is. The government would adopt PR immediately if they sincerely believed in the "Will of the People". When the "Will of the People" suits them they play on it.

They haven't been told they can't have a referendum. They have been told that they can't have one until Brexit is a done deal. This is to ensure that the Scots are totally clear about the options they have. How can you vote about something before being in receipt of the full facts?!
