Did anybody feel sorry for her yesterday? Or embarrassed? Or, like me, annoyed that she was so ill prepared and frankly incompetent.
She "misspoke" apparently. hmm
She only had one job to do.
And before anybody says the poor dear had to give eleventy billion seven interviews -she is a professional politician it's what she does.
What compounded it was her tone of voice -like a primary teacher talking to a very stupid child, trying not to lose her patience but clearly just about to. Especially as she was talking such nonsense.
With talent such as Yvette Cooper, Chuka Umunna, Michael Dughan and others (even Ed Balls!) to call on why does the Labour campaign wheel on choose someone like Diane Abbott to score an own goal?

TerriBull Wed 03-May-17 13:37:40

I dare say Diane Abbott has encountered racial abuse which is of course horrible. However, I suspect, like me a lot of people dislike her for her imperious slow deliberate "I'm talking to the proletariat" voice, her condescending manner and her double standards. Along with POGS's quote "white people like to divide and rule" she also said back in the ninties that "white blue eyed Finnish nurses at her local hospital were unsuitable because they had never met a black person." Sweeping generalisations like that would be pounced upon if they were made by a white counter part.

angelab Wed 03-May-17 13:34:09

Can't stand her personally, and Anniebach I agree with MawBroon it's very pc to have a black woman in the cabinet and it's difficult to see any other reason for her being there.

Anniebach Wed 03-May-17 13:30:20

There has been no mention in her colour or race in this forum, untill Daphne brought them up

petra Wed 03-May-17 13:22:09

Perhaps I should have said "we all knew the race card was going to be played
by her defenders

sunseeker Wed 03-May-17 13:13:25

dd - it was her supporters on Jeremy Vine who were claiming she was being attacked because she was black and a woman. Until then I was unaware that anyone had mentioned her sex or colour.

Luckygirl Wed 03-May-17 13:08:53

....but may relate to why JC does nothing to remove his incompetent shadow Home Sec. That is not trivial - if we have no credible opposition then democracy is not well served.

It is truly impossible to understand why he should leave her in post when she is so incompetent - that is why other issues arise as there is no rational explanation forthcoming.

daphnedill Wed 03-May-17 12:58:48

I don't know why I'm defending Diane Abbott. She really irritates me and she'd be a terrible Home Secretary, but it makes me angry when people bring up gender, race or a person's personal life, which are nothing to do with her competence.

daphnedill Wed 03-May-17 12:55:57

She was probably right. They do.

POGS Wed 03-May-17 12:52:31

Well she did once say :-

" white people love playing divide and rule”.

daphnedill Wed 03-May-17 12:52:06

I don't think much of Diane Abbott and her unpreparedness (is that a word?) was unforgivable. However, the abuse she gets for being black and a woman is disgraceful. I include accusing her of playing the "race card" in that.

Just read some of the comments under articles in the MSM to witness the racists coming out from under their bridges.

She messed up. No doubt about that, but some of the comments she's received are beyond the pale.

gillybob Wed 03-May-17 12:50:31

....and 3) His ex wink

MawBroon Wed 03-May-17 12:46:08

If the Race card is being played, I wonder if it is the other way round? That JC can't sack her as she is 1) black and 2) a woman. Çall me cynical but...

trisher Wed 03-May-17 12:31:38

For those who are bothered about a perfect Home Secretary Theresa May's record isn't exactly brilliant. f course she has moved on and won't make such mistakes again will she?

We all knew the race card was going to be played, didn't we?

sunseeker Wed 03-May-17 12:25:17

Really annoyed now - listening to Jeremy Vine it is being suggested she is being "attacked" because she is black and a woman. Nothing to do with the fact that she messed up, badly!

POGS Wed 03-May-17 12:22:07

Not for the first time Dianne Abbot has not engaged brain though is it.

To say this was not of her doing as some have implied is as ridiculous as her not knowing her brief as Shadow Home Secretary.

thatbags Wed 03-May-17 12:19:58

I've always had a low opinion of her as a politician. I don't know her personally.

petra Wed 03-May-17 12:19:38

Phoenix
Thank you for the brilliant joke grin
Lucky
Thank you for planting the image of comrade Corbyn hiding the sausage with comrade Abbott. It took me weeks to get rid of the image the first time round, now I have to start all over again grin

merlotgran Wed 03-May-17 12:16:49

You'd think the first interview might be the rusty one - not the 7th. Surely any 'misspeaking' should be ironed out by then.

kittylester Wed 03-May-17 12:07:30

Maw, I'm so glad you started this thread.

I almost started a similar one earlier yesterday after I had seen her patronising interview on Breakfast. Her excuse that it was her 7th interview was pathetic. If she can't cope with that how on earth will she cope with real pressure when Labour win the election - as if!

And, it wasn't her fault it was the media!! Scary!!

Anniebach Wed 03-May-17 12:02:17

Surely the leader is involved with the policies and if kne in increasing the number of police he would discuss it with his shadow Home Secretary and not aids, worrying to think these decisions . are reached without the shadow cabinet involved .

Abbott said to her aids, - the leader is to make an announcement of an increase in police officers, do pop along and find out what he has planned ?

daphnedill Wed 03-May-17 12:00:14

I mentioned that DA irritates me a few months ago and was pounced on for being racist and sexist. Hmm!

It should be obvious to anybody that a police officer costs somewhere in the region of £50,000 with salary, pension, training, extra equipment etc. (possibly more). If you want 10,000 of them, just add four noughts to 50,000, which gives a figure of 500 million. It should have been obvious which figures were totally wrong.

Beammeupscottie Wed 03-May-17 11:56:07

I think she is menopausal. Another few thousand votes for the tories. Let us hope she loses her seat.

Riverwalk Wed 03-May-17 11:50:36

She's very arrogant and was obviously ill-prepared; also has a very safe seat.

Varian I love 'More or Less' - it debunks many a mathematical myth including the odious one about Mohammed being the most popular boys name in the UK leaving everyone to think that there are more Muslims being born than any other group.

MawBroon Wed 03-May-17 11:45:27

Trisher to follow from what Anniebach said
Advisers advise, leaders lead, and may I add, therefore aides aid
It may be the job of the "backroom boys" to prepare the information and brief their Minister or shadow minister, but the responsibility for being on top of their facts lies with the politician in this case, with Diane Abbott.
No point in passing the blame on to some intern and shameful to do so in any case.
