The BBC has announced:

Party leaders to take part in BBC election programmes

David Dimbleby will host two Question Time Specials in which leaders will face audience questions consecutively.

Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn will appear on 2 June, followed by Tim Farron and Nicola Sturgeon on 4 June.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-39845685

Now, given that there was some concern a few months ago over the 'packing' of Question Time audiences with Right Wing sympathisers I wonder how this is going to pan out.

Will audiences be invitation only, with invites controlled by the parties concerned?

Will the questions be notified to the participants in advance?
(I realise that the programme makers will screen potential questions and try to ensure a 'balance' but it would be, IMO, useless if all the participants are doing is trot out prepared answers)

How much audience participation will be allowed , for example, will a questioner be able to 'come back' after they've had an answer?

Also:

In addition, Mrs May and her husband Philip are also expected to appear on BBC's One Show on 9 May.

WHY Philip?

I sometimes listen to Any Questions on Radio 4 and I don't think that it has an invited audience, I think David Dimbleby (or some other BBC person) said they had no control over who made up the audience. The audiences always seem quite left wing to me.

Seperate is still married

Anniebach Tue 09-May-17 18:47:55

Why do some have such a problem with leaders /PM's partners, we think Phil is chocolate for supporting queenie but heaven help a politicians spouse .

Perhaps the third Mrs Corbyn doesn't want to go public, perhaps Corbyn , being much older than previous leaders is of the - in the kitchen and the bedroom type

trisher Tue 09-May-17 18:44:46

SEPARATED Annie- divorce takes longer particularly if you want it to be amicable.
Just as President Macron is happy with a woman 20 years his senior. It takes all sorts.....

Anniebach Tue 09-May-17 18:41:23

First wife, I wasn't sure, so not divorced , he has a complex past when it comes to women doesn't he? Let's hope this one works, possibly he is more comfortable with a wife over twenty years younger .

Ana Tue 09-May-17 18:19:46

Oh dear, so bitter and twisted! grin

trisher Tue 09-May-17 18:14:11

Annie Corbyn was separated from his first wife when he became involved with Abbott and his ex-wife said herself there was no prospect of reconciliation.
I never watch the One Show anyway rar Inane gabbling by idiot presenters (Ah now I understand about the Mays!!!)

ninny Tue 09-May-17 18:13:25

Perhaps Corbyn doesn't want his wife with him on the show. Not got a good track record with women has he, carrying on with Diane Abbott behind his wife's back. Always surrounded by women when you see him on tv out and about. He must have hidden talents grin

pollyperkins Tue 09-May-17 17:56:36

I agree with cosefina about Corbyn

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 17:35:35

Some of these threads are more funny than any comedy show!!

nigglynellie Tue 09-May-17 17:31:05

The Tory party doesn't do divorce?!!!! What a particularly silly comment! I assure you Tory marriages go pear shaped just the same way as others do!
As for suggesting Phillip May is some pathetic hen pecked nonenty I can categorically tell you that this is not the case!!

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 17:19:28

I posted this on another thread in response to a poster who said that we don't do the First Lady thing here:

Well, we never used to, the Prime Minister's wife or husband always kept a very low profile, supporting in the background, until the arrival of Cherie Blair. Sarah Brown stayed as much in the background as possible and I think that Samantha Cameron tried too, but of course, Cherie had opened the flood-gates of the media interest in PM's spouses.

Threads are getting intertwined!

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 17:13:23

and the Tory party don't like divorcees niggly

Is that a fact? I never knew!

On the other hand perhaps she is so domineering he just HAS to be 'keen on politics"
LOL
More supposition!!
Perhaps just supportive?

Anniebach Tue 09-May-17 16:58:23

Three marriages is not the norm though. He equals Trump.

rosesarered Tue 09-May-17 16:17:27

The One Show wanted the two couples on the show, the Mays agreed, the Corbyns didn't,simple as that. Mr May has always been politically minded I read somewhere,so is happy to appear. If you would rather not see him, trisher, turn the tv to another channel.

Anniebach Tue 09-May-17 16:01:40

I can understand TM wanting her husband involved, she has said he was so supportive when her parents died she was only 25, The latest Mrs Corbyn must find it difficult, only married three years and he was a back bencher then. I think Abbott was involved during marriage no 2 , or perhaps is was marriage no 1

Plus the latest Mrs Corbyn is .mexican and hasn't has much time to get use to British politics

trisher Tue 09-May-17 15:57:59

On the other hand perhaps she is so domineering he just HAS to be 'keen on politics" rar and the Tory party don't like divorcees niggly. Whereas most of us know marriages do break down and real life is seldom 'meet your prince and live happily ever after'! A long and devoted relationship it may be but is that because it has been politically expedient? Anyway I really don't care who a politician is married to, or divorced from. And I don't want to see Mr May.

nigglynellie Tue 09-May-17 15:41:01

Oh dear, more ridicule! (sigh). I think you will find that they are a devoted couple who live extremely happily together. They met when undergraduates and, apart from work have hardly been separated since. If their marriage is anything to go by, we should be ok. Perhaps a third marriage doesn't have quite the feeling of stability conpaired to a long and devoted relationship?!!

rosesarered Tue 09-May-17 15:39:58

I have never actually seen Mrs Corbyn, so she obviously doesn't want any limelight.

rosesarered Tue 09-May-17 15:38:57

Apparently Mr May is very keen on politics, so would be very interested in appearing.

Ana Tue 09-May-17 14:29:44

Mrs Cameron and Mrs Brown were always keen to show their support for their husbands, I seem to remember...(not to mention the awful Mrs Blair!)

trisher Tue 09-May-17 14:08:17

Interesting isn't it a husband now feels obliged to appear at his wife's side and show his support, a wife is more independent and says 'no'. Well done Mrs Corbyn for refusing to join in with the silliest of games. I wonder if Mr May simply daren't say 'no'? After all she is a 'bloody difficult woman' and he has to live with her!

varian Tue 09-May-17 13:36:21

We won't be seeing Mrs Corbyn on the One Show

www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/may/09/jeremy-corbyns-wife-will-not-join-him-on-one-show-sofa-labour-says

MaizieD Tue 09-May-17 12:10:20

I feel we gain nothing from seeing these politicians perform their set pieces

I agree, which is why I was speculating on how the questions to them were to be 'managed'. It's always to be hoped that some canny viewer might ask them something that they have to make a genuine response to, if they don't know in advance what the questions will be. And if the questions aren't chosen to be as 'soft' as possible.

These parties have had their day and look at the mess we are in.

So what do you suggest as an alternative?

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 11:59:50

Jalima you are right of course my TV has off button too grin

well, you do go into some houses and wonder if there is an 'off' button!
