May to appear on TV after all during GE campaign

Jalima you are right of course my TV has off button too, I meant my comment more generically I suppose, as I feel we gain nothing from seeing these politicians perform their set pieces and yet it is sold to us as if it is the latest thing in information pertinent to making our minds up.

We managed perfectly well without it before and had better quality politicians to choose from, I think. We would be better off with an unlucky dip by way of selection process, because none of them have a clue about how to resolve the state we are in. Nor can we pick and mix, we have to have a set menu manifesto and they can bugger it all up as much as they like and the penalty for that is gold plated pension and a book tour.

Corbyn is busy robbing us of an opposition, to offer free parking at hospitals and some other low level social policies and May is going to be 'strong and stable'..........Farron is just shrieking his way to oblivion and UKIP are a spent force now.

There is too much of it by far and all of it faked, none of them understand economics, Cameron didn't know the difference between defecit and debt.

For me it isn't about turning the telly off, it isn't on much here unless there is art or history on, it is about collectively having our intelligence insulted.

These parties have had their day and look at the mess we are in.

I don't watch much TV and have never seen the One Show.

Can anyone tell me if it is common for politicians and their spouses to appear on it? (apart from if they're promoting their memoirs etc).

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 10:54:54

Why do we put ourselves through a this??
My tv has an 'off' button !

All these chat shows are full of people promoting their latest book/film/tv show etc - and they say the BBC doesn't have any adverts GillT57!
If it happens to be on DH and I usually groan and ask 'what are they selling'?

The thing is, there are occasionally some interesting items on The One Show, it is rather 'magazine-like', unlike other chat shows which are merely sales propaganda.

GillT57 Tue 09-May-17 10:16:57

The One Show is the most bland insipid programme on TV. Packed full of actors promoting their latest film or book. It isn't exactly cutting edge.

Why were the Guildford people who applauded the policies so horrified that they came from Corbyn? Admittedly he's not my cup of tea, but they sounded like excellent policies.
I'd far rather have the un-charismatic Corbyn and his policies than Treason May butchering the country - literally, when Scotland and Northern Ireland break away

Yes, all the Dimblebys think they own the UK and that none of us understand anything without them explaining it, or putting it in a book.

NannyMargaret48 Tue 09-May-17 09:57:35

Maybe we are jumping to conclusions about tonight's appearance on the One Show? I don't think it is a party political thing at all as after all all the parties get the same amount of time. It amazes me that people get so wound up before they know what's involved and make so many assumptions. And by the way, this is not a political post supporting anybody, unlike the majority of posts on GN.

Wow a fibbing competition on the telly...........I would prefer Diane Abbot doing her stand up routine. Why do we put ourselves through a this??

vampirequeen We live in hope but I think that most newspapers have become opinionpapers instead and don't inform people any more.
Private Eye is full of serious articles about the problems the Tories are causing, like their apprentice schemes that young people are likely to finish after three years with no recognisable qualifications because they did not hire assessors or set up a qualification system.
If Private Eye can find so many (and they aren't partisan) why can't the Guardian, Independent or other purportedly independent papers.

I'm glad they are not having a "head to head" debate - nor all the leaders in a semi-circle trying to score political points off each another - they're never very enlightening.
I think the Trump v Clinton debates and the Macron v LePen debate were unedifying to say the least.
I heard on the radio that Jeremy Corbyn's wife has been asked to appear with him on the One Show - as is Teresa May's husband. Isn't the One Show more light entertainment rather than heavy politics? (Never watched it - clashes with the Archers smile) so we might see a more human side to our politicians.

I don't understand why she is appearing with her husband. Have any other party leaders ever done this in the run up to a GE?
It seems a bit 'presidential' to me.

rosesarered Mon 08-May-17 22:45:52

I didn't think T May ever said that she wouldn't appear on tv( with an audience )
But rather that she wouldn't do debates with Corbyn ( in the Trump/Clinton style)

Ana Mon 08-May-17 21:07:56

Well, he did appear on The Last Leg a while back wearing an ermine-trimmed gown. I expect he takes himself a bit more seriously now though...

varian Mon 08-May-17 21:02:11

I wonder if we'll see Mr and Mrs Corbyn on next week's One Show?

Pittcity Mon 08-May-17 20:45:38

TM is on The One Show tomorrow with her husband. Wonder if he has been told to call her a bloody awkward woman?

trisher Mon 08-May-17 18:35:11

My DS forecast this. He said she was only saying she wouldn't so that people would protest and that she would eventually agree and then say she was doing it because that was what the people wanted.

kittylester Mon 08-May-17 17:54:23

I think she said she wouldn't do a TV debate nit that she wouldn't appear at all. That would be plain silly.

vampirequeen Mon 08-May-17 16:37:29

I'll look forward to that.

Perhaps the electorate with suddenly realise that JC isn't the half-witted left wing loony that the msm would have us all believe.

Giles Brandreth shocked some voters in Guildford and their reactions were brilliant.

MaizieD Mon 08-May-17 15:15:13

It was some time ago, roses and I believe that the person responsible has been relieved of her post. I'll try and find it when I have time.

angelab Mon 08-May-17 15:14:09

Yetanother example of TM doing a complete U-turn

rosesarered Mon 08-May-17 14:27:42

...packed with right wing sympathisers? grin Really? Not when I have been watching QT, and I would think they invite a cross section of both society and politics.

Ilovecheese Mon 08-May-17 13:14:37

And David Dimbleby talks too much

Luckygirl Mon 08-May-17 13:10:47

I am glad that they will appear consecutively to answer questions from the audience. I find the slanging matches wholly uninformative.

Luckygirl Mon 08-May-17 13:08:07

Oh goody - I can be told all about "strong and stable" again - that will be great!

MaizieD Mon 08-May-17 12:47:11

The BBC has announced:

Party leaders to take part in BBC election programmes

David Dimbleby will host two Question Time Specials in which leaders will face audience questions consecutively.

Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn will appear on 2 June, followed by Tim Farron and Nicola Sturgeon on 4 June.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-39845685

Now, given that there was some concern a few months ago over the 'packing' of Question Time audiences with Right Wing sympathisers I wonder how this is going to pan out.

Will audiences be invitation only, with invites controlled by the parties concerned?

Will the questions be notified to the participants in advance?
(I realise that the programme makers will screen potential questions and try to ensure a 'balance' but it would be, IMO, useless if all the participants are doing is trot out prepared answers)

How much audience participation will be allowed , for example, will a questioner be able to 'come back' after they've had an answer?

Also:

In addition, Mrs May and her husband Philip are also expected to appear on BBC's One Show on 9 May.

WHY Philip?
