I don't think you will persuade right-wingers whitewave. Unfortunately there are still those in this country whose view chimes with the DUP and, of course, they should be able to send to parliament people to represent the proportion of the numbers that feel that way. I think this would be a very low number and we would have to hear their bigoted views and others, in larger numbers, would ensure their extremism was not thrust on this country.

May has decided that those with these views will have a controlling vote on the leadership of this country. That is entirely unacceptable.

I would jolly well hope so if her party was willing to team up with such prehistoric bigoted views.

The DUP are corrupt, homophobic, racist and above all religious bigots of the worst kind. The nastiest people in politics. The utterly discredited Theresa May refuses to resign and intends to continue to rule over us with the support of this ugly faction.

I might add that I do hope that this election has made Nicola Sturgeon realize that Scotland do not want independence from the rest of the UK and certainly don't want another referendum. A clear message that we really are, all of us, better together. Happy days.

I want to add my voice to the protests. I have never voted for anything the DUP stands for and never would. To think that this country could be held to account by such people is surely the worst of all possible worlds. I would not have wished for yet another election, but that would be preferable in my view to the tail wagging the dog; especially this particular group of ultra right wing recessionists. Heaven help us!

They are not supposed to be able to vote on laws that only apply to/effect England but somehow still managed to vote on the English Sunday trading laws and blocked the very extended laws in England that they "enjoy" in Scotland so not sure how it works at all.

These are the folk in the DUP who will be holding us to ransom - the creationist stuff is the worst - unbelievable!

Let us hope that Ruth Davidson will use her 12 MPs to do what they can to counter this - she has already expressed strong views about the DUP link. I am however unclear as to how much clout the Scottish MPs have over laws that specifically apply to England - I know some new rules were under discussion but I am not sure where this is at present.

Mazie I was just trying to find a link which gave all the voting percentages to see where we would be if we had PR but can only find the Tory/labour figures. Would be interesting to see.

Another general election in October?

Consider the findings of the Prince’s Trust in its annual Youth Index. The overall wellbeing of young people, it has announced, is lower now than at any point since it launched the index eight years ago. Over a quarter of young people report feeling a lack of control over their lives; over a third feel they will have a “worse standard of living than their parents”; 42% feel that “traditional goals” such as owning a home, or getting a steady job are “unrealistic”. The young will pay for political developments they overwhelmingly did not vote for: nearly six out of 10 say that recent political events and the current economic climate make them feel anxious for their future.

WE might indeed end up with compromises, but at least we'll feel that we've been 'heard'. My vote hasn't counted in a single General Election I've ever voted in (since 1971) because the constituencies I've lived in have always been safe seats for a party I don't vote for. I keep doggedly turning up because a vote must be used. But it would be nice to feel that it did count at some time.

I don't fear compromises because they limit extremism and are more likely to satisfy the greatest number of people. I also think that if people have a greater feeling of 'ownership' of a result it lessens divisiveness and polarisation of views.

Mazie, that might be where we end up. But we still end up with difficult compromises.

The young are clearly enthused and this may well prove to be the start of a trend which leads to a Corbyn govt. at some stage. But that is far from clear right now. All that Labour has done for the moment is to stop the rot. Fair play to them, but they have a long way to go. Certainly, next time they won't be helped by such a suicidal Tory campaign, and the expected boundary changes will favour the tories. It's hard to call anything these days but it looks to me as though we might be looking at hung Parliaments as the most likely result of any GE for a while.
