Yes - diesel fleets too gillybob, I forgot that as businesses were encouraged to change over to diesel by the last Labour Chancellor.

None of these proposals would help to stimulate the economy imo and encourage people (many young) to set up their own businesses.
But that is just my opinion.

Mazie - Murphy of course makes a good case but he isn't the only economist in the world and, despite what he says, governments can't just print money and expect nothing but positives as a result. You have to get tax and borrowing just right in the context of the state of the country at the time, keep changing the balance as the landscape changes, and be very careful about how you spend the money. For example, it's far from clear that spending a small fortune on free tertiary education will have a significant beneficial effect on the economy. Frankly, I don't know the best balance, and neither does the good professor. For what it's worth,my guess is we should tax, borrow and spend more but not as much as Labour suggests. Not because I think I can guess better than them, but because I think the effect of going to far (Greece etc) is more damaging than not going far enough (us at the moment). So I'm cautious.

I'm happy (ish). Goodbye Robertson, Salmond and others! Voters in Scotland had no choice - read Grannypiper's post. But now UK politics are in turmoil just when we needed stability to negotiate EU agreement. Worrying times.

Oh he did intend to raise minimum wage to £10 per hour, crippling large volume manufacturing and raising prices. Crippling small businesses who can't afford to pay a labourer or ( older) apprentice £10 per hour plus NI ( job tax) plus pension.
He also planned on attacking diesal cars etc. Most businesses operate diesal fleets . Nothing good I'm afraid .

Could you be kind enough to comment on Labour's manifesto proposals for small businesses? I'd really like to know what you think.

I too am angry st big business avoiding tax. They have the bargaining power and the right people to "manipulate" ( for want of s better word) their profits. Small businesses have no such choice. Pay what you owe or we close you down. End of. We are always being hold we are the backbone of Britain. What a joke.
I can't complain about the rates system as one thing the torries did for small manufacturers ( based on premises value and size) was to take us out of the rates system all together. Our rates bill for 2017-18 is zero.

Ginny42 there is nothing puzzling about Scotlands swing from snp to Tory, People are fed up with a woman who cannot listen, wont do the job she is employed to do and galavants around Scotland in a bloody helicopter like she is some kind of superstar while elderly gentlemen are left lying in the road for 2 hours because there is no ambulance available to ferry him to hospital or while a young girl is left trapped upside down in a car because our emergency call centre doesn't recognise a certain postcode but all the while drug addicts have their methadone couriered by taxi to them. Thats why !

I wish someone could explain this dementia tax to me. I didn't hear it mentioned in any manifesto. I did hear that the torries proposed to increase the amount you could hang onto after paying care bills to £100,000 from £23,000 though. Seems fair to me . blimey if I could pass £100,000 to my children and grandchildren I would be one happy bunny !

I can understand the anger at big businesses avoiding tax and they should be forced to pay their fair share but small businesses need all the help they can get; the proposed increase in business rates to pay for care by councils was another mistake, this time by the Tories.

I don't recall the Labour manifesto putting up taxes on small businesses.

It says this on page 9:

We will protect small businesses by reintroducing the lower small profits rate of corporation tax. We will also exclude small businesses from costly plans to introduce quarterly reporting and take action on late payments.

Quarterly tax returns (that's what 'quarterly reporting' means) will put a costly burden on small businesses and I would have thought that action to prevent large companies delaying payment of their bills would be very welcome. As I understand it, late payments cause huge cashflow problems for small businesses; they can't absorb it like a big company can. Then they have to borrow to cover their costs.

I agree leeds22 . We need a strong negotiating team. We need a strong government hell bent on putting the interests of this country first . What we have created is a situation where we have no faith in any of our political parties and Europe will be laughing it's socks off ! Just look at the interest rate already. We are weak.

All you lefties are celebrating but what exactly are you celebrating? A hung parliament when we needed a strong government to negotiate Brexit? We will be at the mercy of Juncker and friends now.

I understand money flow daphnedill I work to a tight budget every day and spend my life balancing the books. For that reason I could not vote for JC. Maybe he should work in a small business for a while he would see how it all works. Oops forgot, he hates business we are money grabbing fat cats.
