I think Gilly that the Govt does NOT have to follow the referendum result. It got through Parliament as an advisory vote only but suddenly switched to becoming one which had to be adhered to - I wonder if the politicians are just covering up the fact that they were duped into voting for one thing when clearly another was intended. Parliament is duty bound to do the best for the country - not follow the whim of a million people - for that is what they are doing.
Daily we are seeing the folly of continuing along the current path yet the Govt seems intent on continuing along to disaster.

Report in the Guardian that the DUP want to be able to resume marches through Drumcree (sp). So is May willing to light the blue touch paper for their support.

Moral code- I think not. That could result in deaths

And we should remind ourselves every single day thst the dominany right wing press is for a Hard Brexit regardless of the harm it will do to business and the economy.

That is the agenda. They will get that agenda out at every opportunity.

Thing is, most of the people in charge are in our age bracket. My point all along is that we were voting on a future NO ONE could have known. So taking a massive step into a black hole was better than remaining a member of the EU? Better to have remained at 5th in the world's economy as a member and for the government to have abandoned their austerity programme. They're doing it now their backs are to the wall. Strange that isn't it? I think it's very clear now that a few billionaires are governing this country.

One of the contributory reasons for this mess of course is the media bias.
Mobiot has written a piece that reminds us how the right wing dominant press are echoed by the broadcasting media day inand day out.
A study by Cardiff Uni shows how the broadcasters allow themselves to be led by the media, despite the massive rightwing bias.
For example the NHS was the top of voters concerns throughout the campaign, the econmy came 3rd, and yet the economy on which the Tories were perceived to be the strongest received 4 times as much coverage as the NHS.
Despite the rules on impartiality during last summers leadership contest Corbyns critics were given twice as much airtime as his supporters.
The Guardian does not escape criticism.

Yes I could Ginny I wonder if ( knowing what we know now) some of those who voted to leave wish they hadn't?
I don't want any kind of brexit ww but I don't think anyone could foresee how awkward and difficult the actual process if leaving would be.
Surely we all just want what's best for the UK .

gilly thats not the argument. The argument is the type if Brexit. Absolutely not a single vote cast for that, nor a single vote cast forcwhat should happen if it is clear it is all going pearshaped.

Whilst I voted remain and would like nothing more than a back track, the fact remains that the majority voted leave. Does any government have the right (???) to go against this? Surely we should just be trying to get the best possible deal.

What i am so worried about us that lily livered May agrees that Farage takes part in Brexit talks.

They are ten MPs for goodness sake and in no way should have such clout as they appear to be assuming they will get. I find it interesting that TM appears to be so adamant about continuing the same route as before the GE. N Farage is also behaving as if he is a very important person whereas he is really only the person who caused all this mess and should be in the Tower!

There is undoubtedly a huge battle going on.
There is also no doubt that Davis is nowhere near ready to start negotiations. It is obvious by the statements given out. They are muddle headed with no evidence of clear concise thought.

France and Germany saying the door is still open and until formal negotiations with EU start, we can revert to status quo.
Given GE result, current demands for all parties to take part in negotiations and many 'leave' voters now seeing sense, Brexit is not a done deal!

2019 for the start of the negotiations sounds good to me! With a bit of luck, something else will happen and we can postpone the whole thing for another few years - until everybody's forgotten all about it!

PS. Useless piece of information - Bonn was the "provisional" capital of West Germany for 41 years, because negotiations about the status of Germany and German/Polish border were "on going". This could drag on for years.

I certainly is whitewave. There may be much to come before we feel settled again.

I think they can take their time to form a government whitewave. Do you remember, there was a lot of discussion when the coalition was formed.

It will be interesting to see how May comes back from France.

It is better to get it right but if May and the Conservatives don't do this cross party and including all the devolved administrations they may find they cannot get it through Parliament when the time comes even with the DUP. It only takes some Conservatives to vote against and a few bi-elections for them to end up without a majority when the time comes.

Watching Joe Cox on 2 - there was so much of the leave campaign that was vile.

Does a week matter WW for this sort of thing? Better to get it right rather than rush it.

DUP saying that there is unlikely to be a deal until the weekend. Now MN are saying that the QS will be put back to 26th June!!!! Is that allowed?

Brexit can't start until after QS according to Brussels.
