Aimed at the Wrong People?

Was Jeremy Corbyn's speech at Glastonbury aimed at the wrong people?

The well-heeled and privileged people who paid £238 each for their tickets, teepees or glamping extra, running into the thousands of £, cheering him on and lauding him are not the disaffected living in poverty whom he champions. Do they not see the irony in this as they go back to their middle-class comfortable lives, recycling their rubbish and urging us to 'look after the planet'.

This is from last year but I am sure it is just the same this year. Brand-new tents left behind, mounds of rubbish to be cleared up by others - who cares who clears it as long as they don't have to soil their own hands. Someone will do it - probably on a wage less than a quarter of what most of them will earn.

'Takers of the system' as the commentary says:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=y70LCoK-XMA

And the fence - the fence!! Perhaps Donald Trump could take a lesson on how to build a huge fence to keep out the hoi-polloi, the less than desirable who cannot afford a ticket.

Who said that Glastonbury is 'The Most Bourgeois Festival on the Planet'? Was it someone from Iron Maiden? Can't remember now but I do remember someone mentioning it.

Oh, the irony.
Obviously Jeremy Corbyn didn't understand that, nor did the crowds he was addressing.

This was a good dry year but wet, let alone muddy, camping gear is not easy to pack up and many people go by coach - I am sure coach companies would be glad of having their luggage space full of muddy wet equipment. Left in the field it probably dries and much if the mud fall off. Someone said that the cost of cleaning up is factored into the ticket price and it is giving someone maybe a much needed job.
I do understand that point Welshwife but it wasn't just camping gear left behind, it is the debris from a few day's camping, drinking etc, all left in the tents left for others to clear up - probably on a minimum wage or in exchange for a ticket - the helper said it took 3 weeks to clear and a ticket costs £238? - less than minimum wages I think.
When DD went it was muddy and she bunged everything into big plastic bags and hauled it back to the coach; it all arrived home and was washed and used again.

JanaNana quite.

Have been out having fun so did not get back to the thread, sorry, then the internet was down.

What seems strange is that you are completely ignoring the matter of debris left behind by the entitled types that attended the festival.

And you so keen on supporting the poor and deprived...

Only Ana seems to have grasped what I was trying to say (although others may have done, have not read all the thread yet).

Funnily enough, whilst I was out today (enjoying myself but trying not to leave litter or debris in my wake) someone told me, without any prompting on my part, about his son who had just come back from Glastonbury and was appalled at perfectly good equipment just left abandoned, along with all the debris of a few days spent there. Some people were conscientious and cleared up, took their gear away or donated it but there is apparently something on FB which I haven't seen about the mess left behind and his son (aged 30+) was appalled.

I didn't shoot the YouTube video from last year, it was someone who was much younger and dismayed at the careless abandonment of good camping gear and nasty rubbish - left for others to clear up.

So - if a tent/lilo/sleeping bag is cheap enough to get left behind where does it go - into landfill?

Such a waste of resources.

And I was just pointing out that a word of support from Jeremy Corbyn to those clearing up the detritus and filth of spoilt and privileged festival-goers would have been a word in the right direction.

Recycling - bah humbug

Yes, in answer to someone who asked if I remembered what it was like to be young - I do, and I remember clearing up after myself and bringing camping gear home and disposing of rubbish responsibly - even more important these days when recycling is the order of the day.

If you think this is yet another 'moany' thread then so be it - but it's their future and that of their children whom they may have taken with them and their future grandchildren at stake here.

They seem to have double standards - Jeremy Corbyn tells them that we want to 'Build a Better Britain for Everyone' and that is a very laudable sentiment - pity they didn't listen and start being more responsible for themselves, the countryside and the planet.

Thanks if you've read this - rant over
smile

@devongirl

You just do square bracket [, then write biscuit then close with a square bracket ] No spaces between the characters.

Shazmo24 Tue 27-Jun-17 17:15:45

Any tents or camping gear are sorted out and given to charities...They don't get thrown away!

devongirl Tue 27-Jun-17 16:11:53

Thanks ana! (I still don't know how to 'draw' one though..!)

MaizieD Tue 27-Jun-17 16:00:41

It's a biscuit.

I very rarely use it but it can signify astonishment of a disapproving nature as in "Well, that takes the biscuit!" IMO

Ana Tue 27-Jun-17 15:58:10

biscuit

devongirl Tue 27-Jun-17 15:56:02

Maizie off topic but what is the symbol in your post? (I can't see it in the emoticons below)

MaizieD Tue 27-Jun-17 15:53:24

Simply I think because labour has all ways supported arts, film and television.

biscuit

Words have just about failed me.

Marieeliz Tue 27-Jun-17 15:48:16

We don't all think JB is God's gift. The problem is "the left" think they have the right to shout their support but let anyone else give a different opinion and they get nasty. That is why most of us with a different opinion shut up. No democracy where the left is concerned. I wait for the flack from you lefties.

mcem Tue 27-Jun-17 15:21:07

That's ok teddy. Out of date views like that go with head in sand attitudes.
Opt out if you choose.
Shades of 'I'm alright,Jack' ??

Sheilasue Tue 27-Jun-17 15:20:15

I live in a well heeled area but am surprised how many people are labour in the area including ourselves, Greenwich has a lot of Arty folk tv and film actors most of them vote labour. Simply I think because labour has all ways supported arts, film and television.

Teddy that expression ( and a good one) ends with the words 'with friends'
And we are not friends on here, are we? So let's discuss! grin
Although it can be done with civility.

Teddy123 Tue 27-Jun-17 14:23:42

I stand by the old expression 'never discuss politics or religion' ??????
