Very much needed.

First happy thing to report.

Unison have won their case making it illegal to charge employees for employment litigation. Introduced by the Tories in 2013.

The judges quite rightly said it was wrong to make it difficult/impossible for anyone to resort to law.

Those who paid will be reimbursed.

So the chief whip who has all the dirt, gets rid of Fallon then grabs his job?

GracesGranMK2 Thu 02-Nov-17 17:06:07

oops sorry - got a phone call in the middle of typing. I should have checked for crossed posts.

GracesGranMK2 Thu 02-Nov-17 17:05:04

Just to keep us up to date. Now ex Chief Whip Gavin Williamson has been appointed as the new defence secretary after Sir Michael Fallon's resignation and Julian Smith has been appointed Chief Whip in his place. She has also appointed Esther Mcvey to Deputy Chief Whip.

The appointment of Gavin Williamson has not gone down well in all quarters in the Tory party apparently. He told his local paper that he was "flabbergasted". The loss of Fallon is being seen as leaving May weaker than ever.

She has Brexit and the Brexiteers on one side as a challenge. The ailing NHS and Universal Credit brings her more challenge from the more centrist members of her party and faltering economy with worse to come after Brexit make Hammond feel hogtied when it comes to challenging the Labour Party. Add to this the fact that none of the parties know if anyone else will have to go because of the harassment turmoil and you could almost feel sorry for May - but not quite.

What qualifications does he have?
Ex- forces?

No, nothing to do with forces. He's a bit mixed up, though.
He has voted for protecting the green belt, but for high speed rail and for selling off public forests. Obviously he can't see the problem there, because he never rebels against his party.

Welshwife Thu 02-Nov-17 16:50:27

How would he manage to do that I wonder when he has never held a Govt post before - is he an MP?

whitewave Thu 02-Nov-17 16:48:04

Blimey that seems to have gone down like a lead balloon.

Me-thinks these are the last few days/months of this government

whitewave Thu 02-Nov-17 16:45:04

Gavin Williamson appointed himself apparently?

Rumour now is he’s after premiership. A remainer.

Brexit thread finished, but I thought this might fit here.
Just to annoy Brexiteers a bit more.

maryeliza54 Wed 01-Nov-17 20:56:49

Such an embarrassment of riches

whitewave Wed 01-Nov-17 20:56:36

Good lot aren’t they grin

GracesGranMK2 Wed 01-Nov-17 20:51:04

Helen Lewis‏ tweets:
May's top team: Fox (already resigned from Cabinet once); Johnson (already resigned twice) Green (facing allegations); Fallon (gone).

maryeliza54 Wed 01-Nov-17 20:50:12

Well he's not managed to remain in the cabinet has he? Of course there's more - the question is will it come out? Or is that the deal? Some of us have said that there's such a thing as the tip of an iceberg.

whitewave Wed 01-Nov-17 20:37:46

I am surprised he’s resigned just for hand on knee which was apparently donkeys years ago and dealt with very adequately by the woman he insulted.

Wonder if there is other stuff?

whitewave Wed 01-Nov-17 20:25:25

Fallon is a remainer isn’t he?

GracesGranMK2 Wed 01-Nov-17 20:25:06

Oh!

I expect she will have to wait and see who else resigns before she does a reshuffle.

durhamjen Wed 01-Nov-17 20:19:50

Football. Sunderland has just sacked its manager.

Perhaps May will put Davis in Fallon's job.

whitewave Wed 01-Nov-17 20:19:14

No? But if they’ve lost the Brexit report vote, will they have to disclose and if they don’t will they be guilty of holding parliament in contempt? Will they be able to redact (sp) any of it?

GracesGranMK2 Wed 01-Nov-17 20:13:10

Kevin Maguire tweeted "Hoping Michael Fallon hasn’t resigned to take the Sunderland job. Was wanting somebody better" Do you know what that is in reference to?

whitewave Wed 01-Nov-17 20:10:12

How about Damion Green?

whitewave Wed 01-Nov-17 19:44:19

Oh dear

durhamjen Wed 01-Nov-17 19:42:53

Fallon resigned from front bench.

This isn't quite so funny.

Anniebach Tue 31-Oct-17 18:50:05

Naughty Alistair , but so funny

durhamjen Tue 31-Oct-17 18:19:24

I know he's not in government any more, but he did a lot of damage to the UK when he was.

Labour’s Chris Bryant says when he was a young vicar a friend told him he had been raped by a senior member of the clergy. The friend was suicidal. The senior clergyman had protection, including from certain members of the royal family. Isn’t the best way to protect people by looking after the victim? And shouldn’t an HR person sit in on interviews?

Leadsom says this case is a terrible one. The Commons should protect all people who come to the Commons to work.
