As Newcastle gets £500000 ot fight right wing extremism
www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/right-wing-edl-newcastle-racism-13402419
there is also news that the cities 2 universities are still attracting EU students and there are increasing numbers of students from the Middle and Far East coming here. Will the money really help? And what can be done to mend a fractured society? When I see the EDL demonstrating and yelling in a city centre crowded with all nationalities I can only see more trouble ahead. Can you educate people to understand the benefits these students bring?

50th anniversary of Crisis. I bet when they set themselves up, they didn't expect these statistics 50 years on.

Jalima, I speak as an outsider and I have noticed the change , so sad

Anniebach Wed 09-Aug-17 13:35:04

it's what Wales has had to take for centuries Gilly

gillybob Wed 09-Aug-17 13:24:30

I feel more in touch with my Scottish neighbours than I do with the South of England. except when it comes to football

gillybob Wed 09-Aug-17 13:23:03

the north seem bitter towards the south and the south uncaring about the north

I guess we are bitter Anniebach when all we hear is more and more Southern investment and we just fall along the wayside as though we don't matter. I still fail to see why governments can't force/encourage businesses out of London. Perhaps they prefer it the way it is... divided.

Jalima1108 Wed 09-Aug-17 13:21:42

I know, and these reports are very useful and should be a guide to what could/should be done but instead seem to set one group against another - the Intergenerational Foundation is one such body which seems to do this on a regular basis.

Anniebach Wed 09-Aug-17 13:18:55

But it's one country Jalima, that is so sad , we are all use to England v Scotland . England v Wales. England v Ireland , and not talking rugby ?, the north seem bitter towards the south and the south uncaring about the north.

This is what divides society.

gillybob Wed 09-Aug-17 12:54:26

....and meanwhile we still have single carriageways on the A1 taking us from Newcastle to Edinburgh.

gillybob Wed 09-Aug-17 12:49:08

Yes Jalima here in the North East we do have a very impressive NHS !

Welcome to The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK.
We offer a wider range of specialist services than any other group of hospitals outside London.
You can find out about us on our website.
You can also see our full range of services and treatments, but some of our main services include:
the Emergency Department at the (RVI)
one of the UK’s largest Maternity Units,
the Great North Children's Hospital
the Northern Centre for Cancer Care
our Cardiothoracic Services based at the Freeman Hospital
the UK’s very first Institute of Transplantation
We’re much more than a provider of local care. We’re recognised nationally as a centre of healthcare excellence, with more than 30% of our patients coming to us from outside the region to take advantage of our expertise. Some patients come from as far afield as the USA and the Middle East.
Quality matters
Newcastle Hospitals has a long-standing reputation for high quality clinical care, and our staff’s commitment to excellence is reflected in our consistent performance at the highest level.
You can find out more about our performance, and we are proud to be the first teaching and tertiary (specialist) referral Trust to be rated as 'Outstanding' by the Clinical Quality Commission (CQC).

90 minutes to get freight from Liverpool to Hull does not look like HS2 is going to improve things for the north.
Grayling has kindly cancelled the Northern powerhouse improvements. So HS2 is obviously much more important.

I read last week that some of the lines in the north are the original Victorian track!

trisher Wed 09-Aug-17 12:42:30

Still a centre of excellence and treatment for many things but going through some difficult times because of the introduction of CCGs and the awful mess that became up here.

Jalima1108 Wed 09-Aug-17 12:37:35

England in a mess isn't it? One country so divided, one half so bitter against the other half

I think you're right anniebach - however, perhaps not just England because there seems to be inter-generational warfare, one part of the UK wanting freedom from the rest, Brexiteers -v- Remainers, north versus south.

Will HS2 help with regeneration of the North or would the money be better spent on alternative methods of regeneration and help if the North has such problems.

Years ago I was very impressed by Newcastle area NHS as it seemed to be a centre of excellence and was making huge strides forward in research and in the treatment of patients from a very wide area - is that still the case?

durhamjen Wed 09-Aug-17 11:16:02

Well said, trisher.

trisher Wed 09-Aug-17 11:15:18

I'm not a Corbynite, I have never been a Corbynite. I am a socialist who sees the Labour Party as it is now as the best hope for the poor, the disabled, the disenfranchised, young voters, the NHS and public service workers. In other words for helping those who have suffered most and creating a more equal society. Jeremy Corbyn is the elected leader of the party- ELECTED not like some other leaders.

varian Wed 09-Aug-17 10:56:04

There are certainly divisions in society- and on GN.

i don't know which are worst - Remaners v Brexiteers, Guardian readers v Daily Mail readers or Corbynites v anti-Corbynites in the LP.

trisher Wed 09-Aug-17 10:20:01

You do spend a lot of time thinking about Corbyn don't you Annie?

Anniebach Wed 09-Aug-17 08:48:22

Thinking of Corbyn, perhaps England should take the Corbyn cure, talk to each other, just sit and talk nicely grin

Anniebach Wed 09-Aug-17 08:41:43

England in a mess isn't it? One country so divided, one half so bitter against the other half ,

Well, you will be just like Venezuela when Corbyn takes over No.10. Utopia will arrive

"Richard Wilkinson, co-founder of the Equality Trust and emeritus professor of social epidemiology at the University of Nottingham, said he was not surprised by the results, pointing out that inequalities rose during the 1980s, and added that austerity was making the north-south divide worse. “The main cuts are to the cities, the labour areas, which need [money] most,” he said.

A government spokeswoman said: “The causes of health inequalities are highly complex but we are taking action by addressing the root social causes, promoting healthier lifestyles and improving the consistency of NHS services etc.

“This government is committed to creating a society where everybody gets the opportunity to make a success of their hard work - regardless of where they are from.” "

That's okay, then. May's government has it under control.

durhamjen Wed 09-Aug-17 00:29:41

The weather map tomorrow shows the north/south divide exactly.
We've got the sunny bit. Down south have the thunder and lightning. I feel sorry for the athletes.

durhamjen Wed 09-Aug-17 00:06:14

Same festival.

Chewbacca Tue 08-Aug-17 23:45:37

I rather enjoyed the photo of him and Samcam photo bombing a young couple at a festival. He looked miserable as sin!

Jalima1108 Tue 08-Aug-17 23:41:41

No!!

Surely not stressed now?
