A divided society-what can be done?

I don't know if it's more fish and chips in the north than the south Annie but I do know that my friends from the south, where I lived before moving to North Yorkshire, prefer them cooked up here because they think they taste better.

There's plenty of wine drunk up here too and I know that our northern friends (male mostly) don't like the beer down south in comparison to the northern brew. Mr. S. who now prefers wine, despite being a Yorkshireman, to beer always said that southern beer was like gnats pee.

Brilliant idea, from up north.
Maybe we need one in all our deprived communities. Only up north, of course.

It's all those little terraced houses up north of that magic line between the Wash and the Severn, everyone lives too close to each other.
Someone I worked with when I moved down souf years ago was astonished when I told her it wasn't all like that.

Does that mean we shouldn't have moved back up North?

We spend a lot of time up north and it surprises me how many illnesses the people we know there seem to have, considering they live so far removed from pollution. Idid wonder if the fall out from Chernobyl heading more in that direction? When I lived in Cornwall a lot of people seemed to suffer from cancer and I think some of it was caused by radon [?] gas. Having said that, I know there are big problems with drink and drugs in places like Ashington where the young have lost all prospects of meaningful employment with the closing of the mines etc. When something like that happens governments should find ways of providing employment for everyone.

And the importance of this research is that it provides an evidence base that should inform government policy

I think it's better to read the research report and not just come up with pet theories - it's much more complex than just diet

Surely life style has an affect, is the north more 'fish and chips' than the south ? Is it beer in the north and wine in the south?

From personal experience I can tell you Primrose65 that most of the families I know have children who have moved away after university, that many of my children's friends are working in the South. That the young people I know with fewer qualifications and from poorer backgrounds tend to remain here. Of course it isn't everyone who complies with this idea but it must certainly be an important, if not the main, cause of the disparity in deaths.

So is labour stronger in the north because those in the north are not as educated as those in the south ?

It's only for England and apparently is divided roughly with a line from the Wash to the Severn Estuary. With statistics like this it's obvious it doesn't mean 'all' isn't it?

From the article, it seems that in 2015, 29.3% more 25-34-year-olds died in the north than the south. For those aged 35-44, the number of deaths was almost 50% higher in the north than in the south in 2015.

I'm truly shocked by these figures. Whatever the reasons, we need to find out what they are and get to work on eliminating them.

And arguably the young people who leave are those who will have healthier lifestyles, partly because of the opportunities they have been given and partly because having higher aspirations and better qualifications they are able to make better life choices.

So the north is full of uneducated people trisher All the smart ones leave? I really don't believe you think that.

Anniebach the radio said that the midlands were included in the figures for the north. I think Lincolnshire is classed as the midlands, but am not sure.

Look at the figures Ana Are you a young man between 25 and 44 I doubt in ? Perhaps it would be an idea to look at what is being discussed before you comment. I'd be delighted to know why you think the figures for deaths are almost 30% more in the North (where I actually live) than in the South

Is Lincolnshire in the north, I don't know where the crossing point is of this north and south divide. Easier in Wales, we have north,mid and south ?
