As Newcastle gets £500000 ot fight right wing extremism
www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/right-wing-edl-newcastle-racism-13402419
there is also news that the cities 2 universities are still attracting EU students and there are increasing numbers of students from the Middle and Far East coming here. Will the money really help? And what can be done to mend a fractured society? When I see the EDL demonstrating and yelling in a city centre crowded with all nationalities I can only see more trouble ahead. Can you educate people to understand the benefits these students bring?

Well I wasn't taking sides here - I was genuinely puzzled about why she was called Lady Nugee. I think it's a pity that anyone resorts to calling a politician a silly or inappropriate name as part of a political discussion. As for double standards, both within and between political parties, surely that happens across the board - at least with the main parties. Or is it just the preserve of Labour ? This is a genuine question because surely one of the hallmarks of good political discussion is to be able to see your 'preferred party' clearly and dispassionately?

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 09:42:39

Hypocrisy is the hall mark of the far left.

Criticise Blair for buying property, defend Lady Nugee for buying property.

Now we have Corbyn refusing to condemn the Venezuela president , his usual dodging the truth line as used when asked about his support for them IRA - violence on both sides is wrong. And not a pip from the far left here on Venezuela.

Maryeliza54
You've never seen some of the childish names that durhamjen uses when referring to Teresa May or Jacob Rees Mogg ?

Anniebach Tue 08-Aug-17 09:06:24

lady N is a hypocrite, just like Corbyn, add Lady Shami, McDonald and Abbott , that lot running the country?

gillybob Tue 08-Aug-17 07:55:16

I don't think pointing out someone's double standards is being bitchy at all . Of course any rich landlord/ landperson with a title in the conservative party is fair game.

ninny Tue 08-Aug-17 07:51:12

Not harsh at all, she let her mask down and showed her true colours. She's a hypocrite.

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 01:05:40

Thanks Maizie - so just one tweet, even if somewhat ill-advised? Seems a bit harsh.

MaizieD Tue 08-Aug-17 00:57:13

maryeliza
It's just a way of being bitchy about her.
She tweeted one picture of a house in Rochester while campaigning there. It had a big St George's cross flag draped over its frontage and a white van parked in the front garden. I forget her exact comment but it caused a fine uproar at the time with accusations flying about her elitism, contempt for the working class etc. etc. As you can see, from comments here people hate and despise her for it. I don't follow her on twitter but I doubt if she's ever tweeted anything similar since; we'd have heard about it.

It's a bloody thankless task to be a labour MP if you are anything other than acceptably working class.

Chewbacca Tue 08-Aug-17 00:30:42

OK durham have it your own way, I can't be arsed.

durhamjen Tue 08-Aug-17 00:28:57

That's not proof, Chewbacca. I've been looking at companies House and can find a property company in his brother's name.
I have also found a retraction from the Telegraph.

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 00:04:52

I still don't get why calling her by a title she doesn't use helps to make the point. I don't know about her tweets - does she tweet a lot taking the mickey out of working class people? That would be awful but I don't think that living in a £4m house on its own means you can't be a socialist and that you are a hypocrite. So it's the regular tweets that are really the issue is it?

Chewbacca Tue 08-Aug-17 00:03:22

And this... "The Lansman family manage a complex web of at least 24 property companies, one of which is registered in Luxembourg, and hold assets well into the millions". Wasn't hard to find, it took me seconds.....

Chewbacca Tue 08-Aug-17 00:02:04

From The Spectator "John Lansman is a veteran Bennite, but his many company directorships are registered to a million-pound riverside apartment at Shad Thames, described by estate agents as ‘spectacular’".

durhamjen Mon 07-Aug-17 23:54:39

Does he? I've never heard that before.
Do you have any proof of that?

Primrose65 Mon 07-Aug-17 23:51:25

It's because she lives in a £4 million house and takes the mickey out of working class people on Twitter maryeliza whilst pretending to be a socialist. That's why I call her Lady Nugee. Not because I'm trying to say she's not a person in her own right, but because I think she's a prize hypocrite.

Primrose65 Mon 07-Aug-17 23:47:32

Jon Lansman has a huge property empire too - Luxembourg companies (to reduce tax I assume) ..... I wonder if he holds Momentum meetings in his £million flat at Shad Thames. It's beyond parody.

durhamjen Mon 07-Aug-17 23:47:25

Like I said, May had to apologise for calling her it.
She can call herself Lady Nugee if she wants to, as it's a courtesy title because her husband is Sir Nugee.
However, she does not call herself Lady nugee, so it's a sort of insult, really, saying she is not a person in her own right.

maryeliza54 Mon 07-Aug-17 23:30:14

I still don't understand durhamjen why would it be 'clever'? It's factually incorrect so how is that 'clever'? Isn't it rather the reverse?

durhamjen Mon 07-Aug-17 23:27:20

They think they are being clever, Maryeliza.
I think May was made to apologise for calling her it in a similar way.

durhamjen Mon 07-Aug-17 23:25:08

£100-140 a week housing benefit for those living in inner London. Not enough to pay the rent.

Chewbacca Mon 07-Aug-17 23:24:40

Some MPs have quite a large stake in property investment companies and some, as Primrose pointed out, co own their rental properties with their spouse and so will only be declaring 50% of the generated income. Some, I expect, declare nothing at all. It would be interesting to know if any of these MPs, who has an empty property, has offered it to any of the Grenfell Tower residents, or alternatively, to anyone who isn't on a high income.

maryeliza54 Mon 07-Aug-17 23:24:28

Can someone explain why Emily Thornberry is referred to by some posters as Lady Nugee? She has been an MP since 2005 and her husband was knighted only in 2014 ( when he became a High Court Judge) She has never used the title so I don't quite understand why she is mis-named. Am I missing a joke?

durhamjen Mon 07-Aug-17 23:19:46

This is Kevin Hollinrake's register of interests. He's MP for Thirsk and Malton.

www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/25415/kevin_hollinrake/thirsk_and_malton#register

He must get a lot for his houses that he rents out; not that he needs it, as he still gets a salary that puts him in the top 10% from his estate agency.

I know the provenance of theyworkforyou.

Primrose65 Mon 07-Aug-17 23:13:57

Probably around £800 - £900 a month for a shared room or a flat share in a reasonable part of London dj.

Primrose65 Mon 07-Aug-17 23:12:00

I bet there are more than that too Chewbacca
- joint owners, so their share is £9,999, therefore not on the list
-directors of property rental companies, they simply register it as a directorship or as a 'consultant', not as a landlord
And I haven't even thought about it properly yet.
