In the news this morning - one in three Jews are considering leaving the U.k because of racism.

83% believe the Labour Party are not doing enough to support them

TriciaF Mon 21-Aug-17 18:46:06

They became moneylenders partly because most other sources of income were denied to them. Not allowed to hold land etc. Also there's no getting away from some of them are very clever with money - survival of the fittest?
I don't think it will ever be stamped out - envy, and fear of the unknown.
As with other kinds of racism.

And it doesn't look optimistic that anti semitism will end any time soon, judging from some posts on this thread, lemongrove .

lemongrove Mon 21-Aug-17 18:21:19

Hatred of Jewsish people within Europe probably stemmed from them being moneylenders, from doing it in a small way to a big way, also very successful merchants.
It's a sad situation that anti-semitism hasn't been stamped out by now.

No t doesn't niggly most people do not hate Jews, do not hate the Israelis but do recognise the need to recognise the human rights of all regardless of colour, race or creed and when they see human rights abuse they speak out. Suppose the situation was reversed and Israelis were being blockaded by Palestinians would you find that acceptable? I doubt it. Neither would I and I find the present situation just as unacceptable. It is nothing to do with Jews and in fact many Jews dislike the attitude of Israel

Some interesting posts and I enjoyed the one about Jesus' brother James who 'ran the Essene community' which sounds like a day centre.? Vegetarian, ? Nobody knows but it certainly can't be claimed.

Ana Mon 21-Aug-17 18:02:06

Two exclamation marks mean someone is 'so angry'? Must remember that...hmm

nigglynellie Mon 21-Aug-17 18:01:06

If we're honest the whole problem stems from the world wide hatred of Jews, going back well into the mists of time! Could be why they tend to be a bit twitchy and over react!!

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 17:54:07

You get very angry about that, niggly.
Perhaps you could tell us what Palestine is, according to you, because it definitely is a state according to the 135 UN nations that recognise it.
Can you explain why you get so angry.

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 17:40:54

Sorry triciaF

nigglynellie Mon 21-Aug-17 17:39:47

Palestine isn't a state!!

TriciaF Mon 21-Aug-17 17:30:20

Annie - I said that ages ago (? page 2?)

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 17:21:47

Wonder if 87% think the Labour Party too tolerant of anti semitism because Corbyn has said Hamas are his friends

trisher Mon 21-Aug-17 17:14:59

I didn't say Gaza was occupied by Israel niggly it is blockaded by the Israelis with all ports closed and all supplies passing through check points. There are opinions that the blockade is effectively reducing living conditions to the equivalent of the Middle Ages. There have been many appeals to ask for medical supplies to be allowed in and some restrictions have been relaxed, but the situation remains dire. The occupied territories are land over run by Israel and since colonised by them.
From Wiki
The International Court of Justice,[1] the UN General Assembly[2] and the United Nations Security Council regards Israel as the "Occupying Power".[3] UN Special Rapporteur Richard Falk called Israel's occupation "an affront to international law."[4] The Israeli High Court of Justice has ruled that Israel holds the West Bank under "belligerent occupation".[5] According to Talia Sasson, the High Court of Justice in Israel, with a variety of different justices sitting, has repeatedly stated for more than four decades that international law applies to Israel's presence in the West Bank.[6] Israeli governments have preferred the term "disputed territories" in the case of the West Bank.[7][8] Officially Israel maintains that the West Bank is disputed territory.[9]
Palestine isn't a huge state and its people are denied basic human rights NOTHING can justify such treatment.

nigglynellie Mon 21-Aug-17 17:07:40

The area was occupied by the Turks from 15? to the end of WW1, then the British ran the area till 1948 after the creation of Israel. The non Jewish population were to have had their own country called Palestine but this was impossible because Israel was within days attacked by surrounding Arab states and the rest is history. Ironically up till then the occupants of these lands had always lived peacefully alongside each other. Just a pity it couldn't have stayed that way.

TriciaF Mon 21-Aug-17 17:03:27

Roseyapple - thanks from me too for your posts. Helping to give a more balanced view.
We've visited Israel 3 times but never lived there.
The thing that has always struck me about Israel is how tiny it is. Compared with the numbers and sizes of the Arab states surrounding them.

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 17:00:19

Palestine existed in 135 CE. It still exists.

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 16:52:04

Not with patronising people Trisha, they are always right - their opinion- sarcastic and at times rather offensive, it's their way or no way

nigglynellie Mon 21-Aug-17 16:46:18

Gaza is not occupied by Israel and perhaps if Hammas the elected government would refrain from threatening Israel at every opportunity with the avowed intent of destroying it, all the horrors that Hammas keep alive and well for their own agenda could be alleviated. No, there has never been a Palestinian state!

trisher Mon 21-Aug-17 16:44:58

So whats the alternative to peace niggly a thousand years of conflict, a people stripped of their language, their country occupied, their customs suppressed? We tried that with the Irish you know and look where that got us.

nigglynellie Mon 21-Aug-17 16:37:47

Why does it matter whether Jesus was a vegetarian or not, is it relevant to something?!
I think we should be very careful before condemning one country out of hand, particularly when it's very existence is an anathema to so many people, most of whom would be happy to see Israel at the bottom of the ocean along with its population simply because?!!!! How on earth can Israel begin to make peace with surrounding country's who are and have been hellbent on destroying it come what may from day 1 of its inception?!!,

trisher Mon 21-Aug-17 16:32:16

How sad to find someone who equates one or two positions of importance as equivalent to granting human rights to a whole peoples. As for Gaza, there is a blockade on the country by the Israelis, it includes medical supplies so of course the people of Gaza have not been able to set up their own health provision. I am shocked that anyone would support the treatment that has been meted out to the people of Gaza by the Israelis. I take it when you were living there Rosyapple189 you were not living in Gaza or the occupied territories.
I also noted that you referred to the Palestinian people as "Arabs" they are Palestinians and have a right to be called such. Just as the people of Israel have right to be known as Israelis and not referred to as "Jews"
Annie you really aren't interested in proper discussion are you?

nightowl Mon 21-Aug-17 16:25:52

But it's an interesting line of thought all the same. I'm always willing to read more!

Ana Mon 21-Aug-17 16:23:35

Quite!

Elegran Mon 21-Aug-17 16:22:00

I'll risk derailing by continuing briefly along the Essene/ Jesus line. Jesus/Joshua/Yeshwa was a common name at that time and place. There being a vegetarian Jesus (however written) among the Essenes is no more proofthat it was "our" Jesus than that mention of Jeremy is proof that Jeremy Hunt/Paxman/Clarkson is the leader of the Labour Party.

Rosyapple189 Mon 21-Aug-17 16:00:22

Primrose, thanks for your comment. Living there one gets to see and get a 'feel' for what goes on.
