In the news this morning - one in three Jews are considering leaving the U.k because of racism.

83% believe the Labour Party are not doing enough to support them

Chewbacca Mon 21-Aug-17 10:39:25

Even the much revered Gruanian has published details of anti semitism maybe this will add more gravitas

Forgot the irony emoji (though we don't have one)

Elegran Mon 21-Aug-17 10:35:24

All those people who don't know how many Jews they know! And all those Jews who don't show publicly that they are Jews!

Then there are all those Muslim women who cover their heads. Everyone knows what THEIR religion is, so they are easily identified to any bigot stranger who wishes to attack them or revile them.

Now I wonder whether there is a correlation somewhere there?

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:33:34

Christ was a .Jew, don't forget that

Chewbacca Mon 21-Aug-17 10:33:05

Durham your post shocked me because it was so dismissive. I cannot imagine you, or anyone else for that matter, saying that any other minority has 17% of their population feeling unwelcome in the UK, but 83% do feel welcome, "so that's good news ". Jews have been persecuted wherever they go, it's unacceptable that they are again being persecuted here and now. And to be so offhand about it is what shocked me. I've disagreed with many of your political opinions, but never your humanitarian views before. And you've left me feeling appalled.

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:32:21

maddyone, that brick thrown through a window was so distressing . I am concerned by anti semitism and deeply concerned that it is increasing. Little wonder over 80% felt as they did about the Labour Party , as a member of that party I want to say the hard left do not speak for me

illtellhim Mon 21-Aug-17 10:30:40

The jews tortured and murdered my Christ, please don't ever forget that.

maddyone Mon 21-Aug-17 10:27:06

Guarenteed safety here, I really should preview

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:25:59

So we should look at the bigger picture ? 120 homes were destroyed in the tower fire, only 120 out of over four million social houses

maddyone Mon 21-Aug-17 10:25:34

Or bar mitzvahs, it should have read

maddyone Mon 21-Aug-17 10:24:36

One of two of the posts on here border on antisemitic themselves in my humble opinion! Anniebach, I'm with you all the way, you are right to be concerned about rising antisemitism in the UK (along with a fair few others who also show concern on this thread.)
The brick and the graffiti photos are truly horrific. The fact that many congregations of many synagogues feel the need to post guards outside their places of worship, or places where bad mitzvahs are taking place speaks for itself. I have visited a number of synagogues and a number of Jewish museums across Europe and often seen guards outside, I'm troubled that Jewish people now feel the need to do this in the UK. Antisemitism was a huge problem in mainland Europe in the recent past, hence the holocaust, but Britain was considered a safe place for those who are Jewish. How sad that British Jews feel they are no longer guaranteed here.

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:21:45

Stop back peddling Jen, you said ONLY 17% ,

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:20:56

No it is not good news , in fact I found your dismissal of only 17% cruel, unfeeling and wondered if you would have said only 17% of Muslims , I doubt it

The many not the few ?

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:20:21

Chewbacca, what is unbelievable and shocking about saying that 83% of Jews feel welcome?

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:19:22

By the way, I hope you have all looked at the figures in the survey.
There are nearly as many people interviewed who do not know how many Jews they know. I don't know, do you?
I don't ask people if they are Jews, just so I can categorise them.

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:16:12

Well said, trisher. There are 263,000 Jews in the UK.
There are 3 million EU citizens, some of whom may be Jews.

I haven't said that it's acceptable for 17% of Jews to feel unwelcome, just that it's only a small part of the numbers of people who feel unwelcome since Brexit.

Chewbacca Mon 21-Aug-17 10:14:36

You're post is unbelievable durham, shocking and unbelievable. sad

trisher Mon 21-Aug-17 10:10:56

Because the same people who are genuinely anti-semetic are usually the same people who promote racist attitudes in general Iam64 and to discuss a problem you need to look at the wider picture. As I have said the failure of the authorities to deal with the problem of Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians provides right wing groups with ammunition for their unacceptable views. It isn't right but it is happening.

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:08:34

If only 17% feel unwelcome, that means that 83% feel welcome. That's good news, surely.

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:08:25

This is not about people from Pakistan, or about Muslims, it is about Jews. Let's not have more Muslim talk on this thread please

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:04:02

Elegran, you jest? No you don't , good grief . oh well my spelling will keep that poster busy grin

trisher Mon 21-Aug-17 10:03:12

But the question was how many EU citizens feel unwelcome here as well?- probably nearer 100%. Of course it isn't right that 17% feel unwelcome, but some of the posters on here should look at their attitudes to all people who live in this country and question why they feel so strongly about one section of the community but ignore others.

Iam64 Mon 21-Aug-17 10:00:45

Why is it that talking about anti semitism results in some people insisting we talk about every group that feels threatened or marginalised?
The reality is that the Jewish people have been subjected to hatred, intolerance and state sponsored murder to a huge extent.
It seems to me that the use of the word Zion as abusive is also on the rise.

Elegran Mon 21-Aug-17 09:59:10

If you are a stickler for absolute accuracy. Illtellhim, could you put an N at the end of my username, please, not an M?

Chewbacca Mon 21-Aug-17 09:57:41

A kosher restaurant was recently attacked by arsonists in Manchester. Youths simply standing at a tram stop have been attacked. Anti semitism is on the rise and it's as unacceptable as racism against any other minority. To reduce it to "only 17% feel unwelcome " is a shocking statement to make.
