Sovereignty and 'take back control'

In view of developments in Parliament over the past few days, such as the 'Henry VII' clause in the Repeal Bill and moves to give the government a majority in House of Commons Select committees , I am wondering just what people who voted Leave understand by the concept of 'Sovereignty' and if they are at all worried by the Government's attempts to bypass Parliamentary scrutiny of legislation and amendments to legislation?

Witty caption, too.

lemongrove Sun 24-Sept-17 15:15:54

I liked your picture too Primrose cheered up my day no end!?

lemongrove Sun 24-Sept-17 15:13:06

So, am guessing Will Hutton is a Remoaner?

Ilovecheese Sun 24-Sept-17 15:01:36

Primrose
I liked your picture

durhamjen Sun 24-Sept-17 14:46:58

I am pleased about that, Welshwife. I wouldn't like them to have the wrong idea about us.
How many UK citizens has May spoken to, to make her get this impression, I wonder.
Boris only gave up his US citizenship when they started asking him for his taxes, so he will not have felt European.

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 13:14:17

Dictators always rewrite history. May would do well to remember that.

Welshwife Sun 24-Sept-17 12:29:32

Lots of UK citizens -particularly those living in EU as well as others - are writing to Barnier and Verhofstadt telling them that they do feel at home in Europe and basically that TM does not know what she is talking about and is not speaking for them.

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 12:14:56

grin no one knows. Least of all Davis for all his bluster.

durhamjen Sun 24-Sept-17 12:12:26

Do you think they are reading gransnet, whitewave?

This is Barnier's statement. I like the penultimate sentence.

europa.eu/rapid/press-release_STATEMENT-17-3427_en.htm

He'd like May's representatives to let them know what on earth the speech meant.

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 12:07:32

James Chapman tweeted

The government must publish its impact assessment on what will happen when/if we leave the single market , as it doesn't have a mandate to do so..

Perhaps someone will leak it?

durhamjen Sun 24-Sept-17 11:51:43

By the way, primrose, you missed a full stop in your reply. I'll let you work out where it should be.

durhamjen Sun 24-Sept-17 11:50:21

Better not make any mistakes in your typing, Primrose.

I have just been reading a lot of tweets. Most of them say how dare May suggest we never felt part of Europe.

Others say it's good of her to adopt Labour's policy for transition, but she didn't have to go to Florence to say she agreed with Starmer.

Others say she has done what she said she would do and unite leavers and remainers, as both sides think she is clueless.

This is taking back control, is it?

Primrose65 Sun 24-Sept-17 11:50:08

Take a chill pill gg I thought you were making a joke about Mr Darcy and illustrated your pun.
Obviously not a play on words then.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 24-Sept-17 11:43:33

I hope that make you feel the superior being you obviously think you are Primrose.

Primrose65 Sun 24-Sept-17 11:40:18

Duel nationality grin

GracesGranMK2 Sun 24-Sept-17 11:28:02

Duel nationality whitewave so not leaving us completely.

Now who would you like to bump into if you were in Italy? Theresa May or Colin Firth?

GracesGranMK2 Sun 24-Sept-17 11:24:02

It's got to be possible mostly. As people realise that there never was utopia - either by being out or being in - there will be a movement of opinion but guessing what the outcome of that will be - who knows?

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 11:03:34

See Mr. Darcy has jumped ship. Good for him!

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 10:58:16

I suspect in 100 years time there will be many thesis written on Britains period of insanity and the dissection of why it happened

durhamjen Sun 24-Sept-17 10:56:06

Why not, mostlyharmless? We should think positively.

mostlyharmless Sun 24-Sept-17 10:38:05

Nick Clegg said (on Andrew Marr this morning) that the Leave campaign promised utopia.

Next autumn, he says, when MPs vote on the final Brexit deal, each MP has to consider whether the deal offered meets up to the promises to constituents of trade agreements and £350 million a week for the NHS etc. If not they should vote against the Brexit deal. Leading to a second referendum perhaps?

Sounds simple and logical. Could it happen?

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 10:30:24

Of course if we had a government that was actually governing Marrs statement would be more believable, but it is like a rabbit stuck in the glare of Brexit headlights and totally frozen with regard to anything else.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 24-Sept-17 09:49:18

Well done the Observer. They are so right. The Beeb has lost the idea of 'reporting' and gone all out for 'journalism'. I think it makes them feel they are superior beings but really it is the actual reporting of facts - sometimes horrifying - that is the most worthwhile.

Just enjoyed watching Nick Clegg on Marr.

Marr is now saying the Tories can go on for years, and years with this government. I think a quote from an article in the Economist which, at the beginning has the reporter in conversation with Labour members at the Shipley and District Social club planning the unseating of Philip Davies, sums it up for me.

When asked how long it [this government] will last, on Labour front-bencher replies: "Who knows? It's a bit like having a frail, elderly relative who you know is going to die."

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 09:46:05

Observer - as ever another excellent article by Will Hutton

He outlines the continual lies being peddled by the Brexit hard right,. He calls Brexit a monumental self inflicted wound, delivered by the attempt to build a Thatcherite utopia and global Britain that are undeliverable fantasies.

Hutton shreds the latest ode to Johnson in last weeks Telegraph saying that it was all based on lies, peddled throughout the referendum and now being resurrected for nefarious reasons.

Moody downgraded britains credit rating because of less and less control we will have over our destiny.

There is a wide consensus that we will lose 100bn worth of trade in services and 100bn worth of trade in goods, should we follow the Brexiters vision, leading to a smaller, shrunken and divided Britain

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 09:32:52

Another article in the Observer questions why the BBC keep creating these political monsters like Farage, Johnson and JRM? None of whom have gained any respect from the ROW and in fact quite the opposite.

I have long thought that the BBC is well on the way to becoming irrelevant with regard to political commentary. The young have clearly given up on it.
