Sovereignty and 'take back control'

In view of developments in Parliament over the past few days, such as the 'Henry VII' clause in the Repeal Bill and moves to give the government a majority in House of Commons Select committees , I am wondering just what people who voted Leave understand by the concept of 'Sovereignty' and if they are at all worried by the Government's attempts to bypass Parliamentary scrutiny of legislation and amendments to legislation?

Oh sorry my point was to petra sorry to confuse.

People who buy Mercs and BMWs will still buy them just be paying more for them. We don't make that type of car here. interestingly the huge machines that dig out tunnels like crossrail are made in Germany , we'd still have to buy them as one M Thatcher got rid of British manufacturing.

maryeliza54 Sat 23-Sept-17 18:24:02

Just giving specific figures that's all

whitewave Sat 23-Sept-17 17:59:28

Yes I saw that - but unsure of the point of the debate - we will presumably continue to import German cars.

maryeliza54 Sat 23-Sept-17 17:57:33

1 in 7 of its cars are exported to the U.K. ( so full fact said in Dec 16 )

MaizieD Sat 23-Sept-17 17:53:21

Then there's this, petra

Germany’s leading industry representatives have warned they will not lobby for preferential access to the single market for the U.K. post-Brexit.

May well be the largest export but still not a huge percentage of the whole. As susied says those who wish to buy them will still do so if they are willing to pay the higher price. Not many people actually buy them anyway now they are leased just by another name. When we came to buy our present car the salesman had to check how we could pay because it was so long since he had actually SOLD a car!!

petra Sat 23-Sept-17 16:38:14

Welshwife
I think the Financial Times might disagree with your statement.
Dated Dec 2016.
"Any fall in uk sales will have a big knock on effect on the German car industry, which counts Britain as its largest single export market
I have a little bit of inside knowledge of this as my son in law manages an Audi dealership.

I don't not care about what anyone thinks, but I don't care about what everyone thinks, that's the difference.
A person could go crazy listening to every comment, reading every tweet, utterance and so on for the next two years solid.
I am not stopping anybody else from doing so, but can tell from some posts that anxiety levels and blood pressure are high.

lemongrove Sat 23-Sept-17 14:38:27

Welshwife depends where you live, and how depressed or buoyant it is, our local Sainsbury was as crammed as ever this morning, with a parking space hard to find.

durhamjen Sat 23-Sept-17 14:33:32

I find it very strange that someone who doesn't care what anyone thinks is even bothering posting on political threads, whitewave. What do you think?

suzied Sat 23-Sept-17 14:28:29

Germany has still got plenty of buyers for its cars, washing machines, machinery, tractors, pharmaceuticals and lots of other stuff. German productivity much higher than uk. We'll still buy their stuff cos we don't make much any more. We'll just pay more for it.

Welshwife Sat 23-Sept-17 14:27:09

Small overall percentage of their cars are sold in UK and generally sales are falling anyway.
We went to the local Sainsbury store this morning and it was noticeable how many car parking spaces there were empty and how easy it was to walk around the store and get a table in the café - huge difference since last May when I was there. It looks as if people are spending less.

lemongrove Sat 23-Sept-17 14:23:42

Germany isn't doing any bluffing!
durhamjens link is to a paper, talking to a handful of people in a square about Mrs Mays speech. What a few German people think about a cliff edge tragedy ? Is hardly of concern.
Which is what I meant on the other thread whitewave about having credence in absolutely everything put out there about Brexit.

whitewave Sat 23-Sept-17 14:18:25

I wouldn't like to call Germany bluff.

lemongrove Sat 23-Sept-17 14:16:09

No, Germany does not want us out, that report is simply talking to a few voters there, and who cares what they think.
Germany will want a good deal for itself and the EU, those cars don't sell themselves you know.
The EU needs our money, they will be pragmatic.

durhamjen Sat 23-Sept-17 13:41:21

Germany wants us out in March 2019 and take the consequences, cliff edge or not. Can't say I blame them.

"It’s folly to rely on banks. They have an appalling record of compliance with any recognisable standards of decency and honesty. Look at any number of scandals – the Panama Papers, HSBC, Luxembourg leaks, and see how UK-based banks present themselves as engines of global tax avoidance/evasion, money laundering, bribery and corruption."

From the article.

durhamjen Sat 23-Sept-17 13:20:45

An interesting article by Prem Sikka about the banks checking owners of bank accounts.

I hope his wife is taking note of what he thinks about the cost of divorce.

whitewave Sat 23-Sept-17 12:16:44

Listening to Mogg - wonder if the loons will try a coup? I reckon Maybots time is definitely limited since Florence.

whitewave Sat 23-Sept-17 08:38:33

Just reading Verhofstadt on Facebook

He recognises the move towards the European position on transition. But during this period-
He rejects the idea of immigrant registration
He maintains that the ECJ jurisdiction will prevail throughout the period
Citizens first.
The UK must come up with concrete proposals with regard to payment after 2020
Ireland must be a priority.

He is looking forward to hearing what we actually want our relationship to be post Brexit

whitewave Sat 23-Sept-17 08:20:56

Looking at Moody's report, I wonder how many leavers voted to crash the economy?

whitewave Sat 23-Sept-17 08:17:20

One of the biggest things was that apart from there being no borders in Ireland - May had nothing to say about that real and present danger.

I suspect that the problem is so intractable that so far they are clueless as to how to deal with it.

Btw if we are leaving the single market and customs union, there will/must be a border. So it is clear what a muddle they are in.

I agree with you about Robert Peston lemongrove
