A quote from an article by Nick Cohen in Saturday's (I think) Guardian

My phone isn't letting me do links - sorry! But try googling it if you are interested.

And it certaintly isn't heaven now

maryeliza54 Tue 19-Sept-17 14:52:45

Of course, life in Cuba before the revolution was very heaven

Smileless2012 Tue 19-Sept-17 14:51:35

Yes, it'sconfusedisn't it lemongrove when the supporters of Corbyn accuse TM and her party of only bringing prosperity to the wealthy and ruling elite.

lemongrove Tue 19-Sept-17 14:38:18

Smileless2012 it would appear not to be the case, regarding your first sentence, as the man could jump into a sewer and come up smelling sweet, according to the way many view him.
Holding up the example of Cuba being wonderful, well, that's beyond bizarre, the people have had no choices there except hard ones, and according to friends who visited, it was somewhat of a dump.Communism only brings prosperity to the ruling elite.

Place marking

Surely the most loyal among Corbyn's supporters are at the very least uncomfortable with some of the individuals and organisations he's been associated with.

There is indeed a lot to be said for how things have improved in Cuba trisher, due to the hard work and dedication of the country's people, but that shouldn't detract from the atrocities that many endured under Castro's leadership and the continuing level of poverty that ensues.

Anniebach Tue 19-Sept-17 13:14:42

Robin did not cosy up to the IRA

nightowl Tue 19-Sept-17 13:04:48

In that case Annie it would appear that Corbyn's idea of an ethical foreign policy is not hard left either. And he is quite happy to be no more a pacifist than Robin Cook was.

trisher Tue 19-Sept-17 12:55:20

How many died from starvation and gang wars in the 50s Annie when the USA controlled everything? Why was this country amongst the most illiterate until 1960's when its literacy rate suddenly became better than ours (and still is)? Why is the Cuban medical Mission to Haiti acknowledged to be the main source of healthcare throughout cholera epidemics and earthquakes? You've said yourself it is a poor country. How can it provide medical help and training to South American countries whilst the USA closes its borders and turns its back? www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Cuban-Doctors-From-Medical-Brigade-Return-from-Haiti-20161218-0022.html

Anniebach Tue 19-Sept-17 12:46:30

Petra , my grandson said the poverty was widespread, I have no intentions of telling a 25 year old man he was mistaken, he saw it I didn't. I will accept his word and yours , both are without political views, just repeating what was witnessed

Anniebach Tue 19-Sept-17 12:41:25

It so happens I campaigned with Robin Cook , he was not hard left

petra Tue 19-Sept-17 12:40:57

annie
I went there in 2002, it was a shit tip, doesn't sound as if any things changed.
trisher I don't need Annie's view of your politics to form my own.

nightowl Tue 19-Sept-17 12:28:44

Corbyn does not claim to be a pacifist. He claims to be against war. There is a difference but it's yet another thing for the press and gransnet posters to beat him with.

He supports Robin Cook's foreign policy. But I guess Robin Cook was too left wing for some posters on here.

Anniebach Tue 19-Sept-17 11:44:46

How many Cubans were shot and how many had to flee the country, not forgetting Corbyn is a pacifist

Anniebach Tue 19-Sept-17 11:43:10

Thank you for your apologyb Trisher

trisher Tue 19-Sept-17 10:34:58

The result of 50years+ of a USA blockade Annie I hope you explained it to him. They even stopped medical supplies. The Cubans being resourceful and independent people built things like kidney dialysis machines for them selves. They were also the only country to offer instant and long term assistance to Haiti after the disasters there. They may be poor but they are altruistic.

trisher Tue 19-Sept-17 10:31:16

So you haven't called me a communist, a Corbynista or a member of Momentum Annie oh I apologise I thought you did. So I hope everyone is reading this and understands that if they think I am all those things it didn't come from Annie No idea where it did come from though.

Anniebach Tue 19-Sept-17 10:27:49

My grandson was shocked at the poverty he witnessed when he was in Cuba this summer

Anniebach Tue 19-Sept-17 10:26:28

Trisher, you dish out insults and boss posters , you demand they answer your questions or leave the thread , you play the victim but Trisher you are bossy and want to control

trisher Tue 19-Sept-17 10:26:05

I suggest you look at the history of Cuba and how many people have benefitted from Castro's regime Annie (and I don't mean Cuban exiles) It wasn't ideal. It was certainly made much worse by the USA's attempts to intervene, but it was much better than when Cuba was the gambling and gangster capital of the USA and its people were kept as slaves, serfs or sex workers, with the lowest level of literacy in the world.

trisher Tue 19-Sept-17 10:22:07

gillybob I DO NOT WORSHIP CORBYN OR MOMENTUM. The fact that you think I do indicates how successful Annie's character assassination of me has been. I have stated before I have left wing socialist beliefs, when Tony Blair took the Labour Party to the right and the country to war I voted Liberal because they had more left wing policies. I have come back to Labour because I see a party which will defend the welfare state and the NHS, will bring the rail system back into public ownership and end the disgrace of zero hours contracts. Corbyn is the elected leader of the party I now support and I respect a democratic vote. Anything else has been manufactured and spread by Anniebach an apology would be nice but as I only expect insults from people on this thread it won't be expected

Anniebach Tue 19-Sept-17 10:19:19

We agree st last Trisher, now you understand my contempt for Corbyn, b

The company he keeps -

George Galloway

Derek Hatton

President Madura

Fidel Castro

Hamas

IRA members

And the entire communist party who declared they will not field candidates at elections but put their full support behind Corbyn

lemongrove Tue 19-Sept-17 10:17:07

Of course it is gillybob but some prefer wearing hair shirts.

lemongrove Tue 19-Sept-17 10:15:50

You sound like a martyr trisher?

gillybob Tue 19-Sept-17 10:11:31

Is it no longer possible to have socialist views and NOT worship at the feet of Corbyn and Momentum ?
