A quote from an article by Nick Cohen in Saturday's (I think) Guardian

My phone isn't letting me do links - sorry! But try googling it if you are interested.

maryeliza54 Wed 27-Sept-17 18:37:48

gillybob I corrected it straightaway and I never mock people for their typos or poor grammar or spelling were you just in a strop because I disagreed with you?

lemongrove Wed 27-Sept-17 18:37:39

Chewbacca ?

lemongrove Wed 27-Sept-17 18:36:46

Be careful where you use it whitewave as you are aware of it's meaning I take it?

lemongrove Wed 27-Sept-17 18:35:17

Stick it back in your portmanteau durhamjen because it actually means hyper with the carbolic, somebody who is super clean.

whitewave Wed 27-Sept-17 18:32:38

monkeys toot grin I shall use that.

lemongrove Wed 27-Sept-17 18:32:31

Maryeliza why not laugh it off grin hybolic was an amusing word, no need to be so stuffy.

Chewbacca Wed 27-Sept-17 18:30:56

Water off a duck's back maryeliza!

durhamjen Wed 27-Sept-17 18:30:47

Hybolic - a portmanteau word meaning water in the ears and thick as a tree trunk?

gillybob Wed 27-Sept-17 18:30:46

For the record... I have often been mocked for bad grammar and poor spelling... I couldn't give a monkey's toot.

whitewave Wed 27-Sept-17 18:30:29

I've just grabbed the remote and about to watch the speech!

gillybob Wed 27-Sept-17 18:29:40

I think if you accuse someone of "being something", then the very least you should do is make sure that the "thing" actually exists, otherwise is this itself not "bad form" ?

Yes I (now) get that you might have meant "hyperbolic" or whatever Maryeliza, but considering I genuinely did not understand what I was being accused of, I decided it might be "good form" to ask?

lemongrove Wed 27-Sept-17 18:29:05

durhamjen you made fun of a poster the other day for putting ( as you thought) a full stop in the wrong place.
People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

durhamjen Wed 27-Sept-17 18:26:30

Here's something to cheer us up. Labour party quick off the mark.

maryeliza54 Wed 27-Sept-17 18:25:13

And norah who sadly shares the same affliction

maryeliza54 Wed 27-Sept-17 18:24:30

That was to gilly primrose and chewbacca who sadly cannot read either as well as being childish, pathetic and rude.

whitewave Wed 27-Sept-17 18:22:13

Of course it is mary

Norah Wed 27-Sept-17 18:22:10

Gilly, what does "hybolic" mean? I can not find it by search. Any idea?

maryeliza54 Wed 27-Sept-17 18:21:03

I rather thought that making fun of typos etc was considered bad form?

durhamjen Wed 27-Sept-17 18:06:54

It was 14 pages the day before the last election.
Never mind, I expect derision from some of you.
Much better than being serious about anything.

No apology to eliza for missing her correction?
No, much easier to carry on taking the mick.

Just be careful yourselves.

Chewbacca Wed 27-Sept-17 18:00:24

There's rather an amusing thread in Chat called "Malapropisms.

gillybob Wed 27-Sept-17 17:59:59

Only 14 pages Primrose? Blimey they must be slipping.

Primrose65 Wed 27-Sept-17 17:58:30

hadn't realised the DM had written 14 pages against Labour

Yes, making creative use of statistical abstracts is an indicator of someone creating a Barnum effect.

Chewbacca Wed 27-Sept-17 17:55:05

grin

gillybob Wed 27-Sept-17 17:54:55

I will need to check that GGM2 and if that is the case then Ofsted must be VERY easily fooled. No mention of it on their website mind you.

I could also walk up and down Downing Street with a poster that says “Tell me how you measure me and I will tell you how I will behave. If you measure me in an illogical way… do not complain about illogical behaviour

I really wouldn't GGM2 as its just a load of nonsense and no-one would read it anyway.

Oh, goodness, the language police are back. I better leave this thread for a while as I am sure to make a mistake

I am sure that if YOU were accused of "being something" you would at least want to know what it meant GGM2 wink

GracesGranMK2 Wed 27-Sept-17 17:54:45

Not if you are me Chewbacca so presumably not if you are some other people either.

I thought the jokes were nicely balanced Jen and hadn't realised the DM had written 14 pages against Labour until he said. DM or not, tomorrows papers will be interestingsmile
