Let's not forget Brexit

I still feel that Brexit is wrong though have no idea how stop it. We get mixed messages on the negotiations, DD says that are going fine but the EU side says otherwise.

There was a protest in Manchester where Lib. Dems., European Movement. Open Britain and other groups made their feelings clear.

Our democracy and standard of living is under threat from dogmatism on both the left and the right.

Nothing on Politics Home, either; all today's politics in one place, says the strapline. Except anything to do with Corbyn.

Twitter reporting Corbyns speech to EU prime ministers.

Notice the BBC hasn’t reported it

Threatened with the law if they do not publish the impact assessments.
I wait with anxious anticipation either the impact publications, or May's resignation.
Can't decide which I want most.

May sent a letter to people like Greta - did you get one, Greta? - telling them how much she wanted them to stay.
However it hasn't convinced most of them.

Thank you, Tegan2, for your kind and thoughtful comments. If there were ever a case of buying a pig in a poke Brexit must surely be a prime example.

Tegan2 Thu 19-Oct-17 17:22:16

Greta; you ARE welcome. It's only a small minority that are making you feel this way. Believe me, those of us that are fighting against what is happening are fighting as much for YOU as for the economy/environment etc. If it's any consolation, many of us born and bred in this country no longer feel we belong here, either sad. x

I am an EU-national and arrived in this country in the early 1970's. I married an Englishman and we have two children and now grandchildren. The are all British and living in the UK. I have worked here and paid my taxes and national insurance for many years. I have never claimed benefits. I now feel that my future is uncertain. Theresa May says that EU-nationals living in the UK will be allowed to stay. But on what conditions? There is talk about applying for 'settled status'. I have lived here for 45 years. Is that not 'settled' enough? Perhaps the saddest thing is that I used to feel welcome and 'equal'. I no longer do.

A good question Tegan - did you hear the leave votre on James 0'Brien today, whose relationship with his French wife has been very difficult since she found out he voted 'out'?

I am so lucky my OH also voted remain and that we are on the same wavelength- I would find it very difficult otherwise even after 47 years. It has been very hard with relatives who are leave voters. One couple visited for 10 days this Summer - and the first thing he did was to throw the DM on the kitchen table saying 'Ah - thought I'd bring you some stuff to read' - it took huge effort and strain to refuse to engage in discussions on Brexit and constantly defuse- Same with other close relatives who spent 10 days visiting very recently.

I said the Tories needed a lawyer.

The bastards have quietly dropped precautionary principle in the withdrawal bill for wildlife and habitat protection, as well as another principle - the polluter pays.

I do wonder how many leave voters actually give a passing thought to those who are being affected by brexit. Having lived through the Thatcher year,s when we didn't know from one week to the next how secure my husbands job was, I know it puts a huge strain on relationships.

Tegan2 Thu 19-Oct-17 15:49:37

RR has said that thousands of jobs could be lost in Derby if we leave the single market. This isn't scaremongering or hearsay because RR was quite clear before the referendum that a leave vote could have an impact on jobs. Very worrying for my family.

John Redwood in Mordor.

Tegan2 Thu 19-Oct-17 13:57:31

We'll be like Cuba where they grow stuff in tin cans in the street [or, at least they did when I saw a programme about the place a few years ago; they may have moved on from that, though].

Tegan2 Thu 19-Oct-17 13:55:46

Or, as he has been referred to 'John Redwood, the honourable member for Mordor' [or something like that].

whitewave Thu 19-Oct-17 13:49:56

This is the second try at the following post

Loon extraordinaire who goes by the name of John Redwood is gaily marching into the future with hoe and spade in hand exhorting us to grow more of our own food as come the big jump we will not be short of food.

Er,! Shouldn’t that have already started given that the loons want to jump asap?

Tegan2 Thu 19-Oct-17 13:29:05

There is a scathing review of Nick Cleggs book in the Times [I assume it was the brexit Times and not the other one] which I must write and complain about as it was obviously written by someone who supported brexit and they did not discuss it's merits, as a book at all.

mostlyharmless Thu 19-Oct-17 13:27:43

At this point, with the lack of progress in negotiations, and the government's slender majority, the opposition really should be pushing for a cross-party team to take over negotiations.

I think the EU would prefer that. The Conservatives haven't got a proper mandate for their Brexit approach anyway since the June election wiped out their majority.

whitewave Thu 19-Oct-17 11:42:02

I see Corbyn and Starmer amongst other labour bods are in Brussels talking to Barnier etc. Let’s hope they can help the PM out of the enormous hole her and her ministers are sitting in.

whitewave Thu 19-Oct-17 11:38:47

I see the tiny minority of loôns have written to the government demanding immediate withdrawal from the talks. Wonder if they have a plan B?

whitewave Thu 19-Oct-17 11:34:26

The cabinet was told that Brexit will be unsustainable unless they can carry the young with them..

Stating the bleeding obvious seems to be a trait of the incompetent government.

whitewave Thu 19-Oct-17 11:26:30

suzie that’s exactly what they are doing (making it up)
The incompetence is probably the worst experienced in this country ever.

Listening to May and the 4 senior ministers in the week leaves me open mouthed with each one totally contradicting the other.

We are never going to get anywhere at this rate what a shambles.

suzied Thu 19-Oct-17 11:14:45

It's funny how those following the Brextreemist message pumped out by 85% of the media who are calling for Brexit at any cost "always knew"-
The pound would collapse
It would be an extremely difficult and complicated process
Prices would rise
The £350 m for NHS was a lie
We'd still need immigrants
Etc

It's funny how we've got short memories - I've listened to a government minister recorded before the referendum saying the leaving process would be simple and would be concluded "over a cup of tea in an afternoon" - the same minister recorded last week, saying "we always knew it would be a long process".
You couldn't make it up

whitewave Thu 19-Oct-17 09:36:23

Think about it - there is a what are you reading now thread -same thing. Someone’s talking through the back of their head I suspect.

Another really good book is Ian Dunt “Brexit what happens next?” Can recommend that as it outlines the real difficulties of trade post Brexit. Pity the brextremists don’t read it and comment.

MaizieD Thu 19-Oct-17 09:17:15

You're OK, Cindersdad, of course it's not advertising; you're not selling it or getting any pecuniary gain from its sale. You're just telling people it's there.

Don't let other people's nit picking bother you.
