There were when we moved here in 2010, but not any more.
There was a council run care home, when we moved here, but not any more. The council had to sell those off.
There is no care home any more in this village.

That's what she rails about, care, pay, housing.
At the moment she is concerned about the fact that her constituents are being put on universal credit from tomorrow, and will have no money for Christmas if they are on benefits.

Don't mind me asking, but why do you think the DM brought this topic up at this time?

Pidcock said she would love one but the reason she can't have one is that there are not enough.
I agree that there are nowhere near enough - but not that she should have one - that is unreasonable.

Perhaps her constituents could start a fund raising campaign for the poor woman , such a sad story, sob

I don't think that, if two people are on very large salaries and can afford to buy, they should expect to be given a council house, depriving someone else of one.

Others, such as some trade unions leaders, may not agree and think that it should be a universal right .

Jalima, I think when we voted for her to be our MP, that she was the best person to do the job and stand up for us in the commons. She is certainly doing that, as did her predecessor, Pat Glass.

Must be the same Fennel, I feel rather cross with her and being accused of jealousy, I want a two bedroomed house, can't have one, if she was given a council house would the silly woman expect a three bedroomed house or would she be happy with one bedroom . So many people on minimum wage would love a council house, silly bat.

A look at a map might show you how difficult it would be if she lived in the Durham Dales in an abandoned pit village.
Tomorrow I am hoping to go to a village in the dales, on the A68, in her constituency. I have to ring up first to find out if the road is open. This happens every year round here. Part of her constituency is always snowed in for a few months. That's the area that has the abandoned pit villages.

Lots of MPs miss votes.
The holiday was booked before she became an MP.
She had permission and was paired with an MP who was voting the other way. It's how it happens in parliament.
That's just another DM non-story. It happens all the time.
She's actually a lot more thoughtful and caring than many other MPs.

At one time there were empty terraced houses up on the Durham moors, abandonned pit villages, which were going for almost nothing.

But why only want a £250,000 house and say what she did about a council house, so jealousy? No and a criticism which was unfair.

I didn't vote Tory.

No-one minds in the slightest a well-paid young couple buying a property in that price range - but she does come across as rather hypocritical and, quite frankly, stupid and irresponsible. Fancy missing a vital debate and vote on Universal Credit because she was on holiday in Venice - even if her partner had arranged the holiday.
If you can't turn up for something like that because you are enjoying yourself elsewhere what use are you to your constituents?

Why shouldn't Laura Pidock and her partner buy house costing somewhere around £250,000? It's a lot more than any of the 30 plus year olds in our extended family could afford but hey ho. Jealousy gets no one any where.

As jendurham said, she was talking about saving for a deposit on an MP's salary. I doubt any of the young people in our family could have saved enough to buy the small terraces/semi's they're now buying if they didn't have parents who could help. The only way the parents could help was because our own parents were able to buy small houses which were sold when they died and some of the inheritance gifted to their grandchildren.
Yes, I know, we are very very fortunate. There are other family members who are struggling, we try to help financially and in other ways.

Government policies are not helping those of us who are less fortunate than others. I'm beginning to feel I want to echo the posters who ask those who did/will vote tory to explain the positive policies that lead them to feel this is right for them and for the country. No need to explain why you won't vote for JC and co, I say that's understood and taken as read.

Hard though some may find this to believe, I think the rich started getting 'filthy rich' under the last Labour government - I am not saying it is right but that was the general ethos of the time which is now continuing.
