Let's not Forget Brexit(2)

I was at an event with Gordon Brown yesterday and he made some interesting comments. His view is that by next summer it will be patently evident that Brexit will leave the U.K. isolated and facing dire financial consequences; he said that coupled with no solution to the problem of an Irish border, it will be obvious that we need to remain in the EU. He said he thought this view would be accepted by the Labour Party.

I have the Guardian rolling news on as they put it in real words for us not just commons jargon.

The two Chrises have been good today, too, Leslie and Bryant.

They have just voted for the European Communities Act to be repealed on exit day.

She was mostly but there are some really good people in the LP at the moment. On the other hand it is rare to see a Tory who isn't an also ran these days so I was more impressed by the contrast. Pigmies and giants come to mind.

Something else to be worried about.

It does seem absurd that within hours of making a speech condemning Russia's interference in elections (eg as in the EU referendum) TM is trying to force through the will of Putin (disguised as the "will of the people" but actually the will of Putin and his billionaire press baron allies)

Dominic Grieve (Tory Remainer) said that Article 50 date could be extended if negotiations are not finished, so a set leaving date of March 2019 should not be stipulated in the Withdrawal Bill.
That made sense to me as a route to avoid a cliff edge Brexit.

I read today that legally if we leave without a deal, we will have no deals with any country other than those using WTO agreements, the whole one of them.
All other agreements are through the EU.

The thing about the exact date for leaving, as I think Clarke has pointed out, is that if there were still a lot of really important unresolved issues - aviation for example - on the date, and the EU nations quite happy to extend the deadline, we'd still have to leave and planes would be grounded.

Kenneth Clarke was saying that he has been loyal to the Tory view on the EU for all these years until 18 months ago when the people voted. He's not the rebel.

Tory rebels and labour will join forces to object to Tory plans to fix a Brexit date, regardless of whether we have finalised a trade deal etc.

I wouldn’t feel quite so worried if I thought that our government was any where near competent, but given that the general opinion that this is the least competent and weakest government since for ever, it makes it doubly worrying.

I have just been watching Pat McFadden who is on the Brexit Select Committed. It was an interesting and measured interview in spite of Victoria Derbyshire's interview technique. You can see it here

Whitewave you have said it exactly, Brexit is horribly permanent if we don't like a government the next election can get rid of them. I am life long Libdem though agree with much of what left wing Tories or right wing labour say. The extremes of both horrify me. That is why as well as stopping Brexit we need a new electoral system where votes really do count. This may well mean perpetual coalitions but they are better than left/right jerks every so often.

According to Anna Soubery this morning it is only about 35 idealogues in the tail wagging the Tory dog, 6% of MP's pushing to destroy the country for their own ends.

Anna Soubrey seems to be the Tory Brexit rebel with the most vulnerable majority (863 seats 1.6%). The other seven mentioned by Chuka on Twitter seem to be in safe seats. Though I suppose if the whip is withdrawn from them, they could be vulnerable too.
