I know, it hardly seems possible does it but here you go.

Not only is it another racist comment about Elizabeth Warren but to do it at an event honouring Navajo veterans would beggars belief (if it weren’t Trump that is).

Over 5 million signatures already.

Good point - and perhaps that's why he's always going on about the Islamist threat in the UK - he's scared to come .

maryeliza54 Thu 30-Nov-17 11:27:52

I read that one reason Obama wasnt invited was the sheer costs and logistics of providing POTUS level security. Multiply this a 1000 times for DT - it would completely detract from the wedding and regardless of what I think about the monarchy, how could anyone wish that sort of circus on any couple getting married? The public order issues would be beyond imagining.

It seems that the USA has elected a fascist as their leader. This is their choice and just as some in this country believed in the propaganda the last time a country did this, there will be those who those who call on his poor logic to say that he is right in this country this time too.

The last time we did not find it easy to deal with and I doubt we will this time.

But this time the bride is american - might make a difference.

vampirequeen Thu 30-Nov-17 08:35:46

If we ignore the things that DT says it will simply strengthen his racist, homophobic etc. views and those of his supporters because lack of challenge suggests that no one disagrees with him.

Such views have to be challenged whenever we come across them. We cannot allow them to become seen a normal/acceptable.

And today it's Trump v TM . That will boost her popularity!

maryeliza54 Thu 30-Nov-17 07:55:30

Obama was not invited to Wills wedding so I can’t imagine that DT would be invited to this one especially as SG has a capacity of less than half WA.

NotTooOld you're right about it not being that small! I just read St George's Chapel holds 800! Trump's security will have to stay outside. grin I suppose holding it in Windsor Castle is less pomp and ceremony than the other options. 800 is a big wedding as far as I'm concerned. shock Still don't want him there. Wouldn't mind seeing what Melania would wear though. wink It will be interesting to see what the American female guests wear because they usually wear evening style gowns at weddings.

If we do business with Saudi Arabia, I have no doubt we'll do business with the US.

Day6 Thu 30-Nov-17 00:31:30

"We cannot refuse him a state visit because in the near future we will need US markets even more than now."

Nope - that's anti-EU scaremongering.
Should we be having more trade talks with the USA in the future we will be working with businessmen and the nations top negotiators, not Trump directly. No decent businessman is going to turn down a profitable deal.

All the world, including the UK, will stay on the right side of the awful Trump because the USA is a mighty global player in virtually every field. The tact and diplomacy missing in the POTUS tends to be well garnered in most statesmen and women.

Macron cosied up to Trump not long ago, don't forget. If they are best buddies, other politicians will have to suck it up too because I don't see too many foreign governments likely to condemn him outright. In fairness, Theresa May did condemn his re-tweeting of the BF video earlier and spoke out against extremist hate speech.

The man is vile beyond belief but no one can say his presidency is boring. What's next?

NotTooOld Wed 29-Nov-17 23:55:48

I doubt it'll be that small, Wilma. I think I read that Windsor holds 1000 people. Mind you, that could be Trump and his security, couldn't it? grin

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 29-Nov-17 23:21:46

Jalima it's supposed to be a small wedding, so I doubt if heads of states will be invited. If she wasn't divorced the wedding would be a different kettle of fish.

We can but hope. Imagine the protests when he does come over.

durhamjen Wed 29-Nov-17 21:29:17

Perhaps he was just giving a subtle hint that he didn't want an invitation?
After all, he is racist. He can't say everything he does against Obama and then accept an invitation to her wedding.

Jalima1108 Wed 29-Nov-17 19:51:31

shock
sudden thought - royal wedding invitation?
He has said nothing yet, has he? So that is him off the list.

Jalima1108 Wed 29-Nov-17 19:50:16

It would cost too much anyway.

Eloethan Wed 29-Nov-17 19:26:28

lilyflower It is not "virtue signalling" to strongly express opposition to a man who is, whether you like the description or not, a bigot and a racist.

In my view, it's important that people do show their disgust regarding this man's words and behaviour, and to try and implying that such opposition is insincere and all for show is, I think, insulting.

Along with "virtue signalling" , the term "liberal elite" has been specially coined to try and discredit certain views. What exactly does it mean, though? Are all the Gransnetters on here and the many people throughout the world who deplore Trump's behaviour part of this group?

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 18:46:12

Problem is Jal he tweets as POTUS. I honestly think a SV is vanishingly unlikey and a ‘working’ visit is in the long grass. The government has enough to do

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 29-Nov-17 18:43:22

Luckygirl I agree going back in history isn't always helpful. What bothers me is when a person in a responsible position is either ignorant about the history (Trump) or insensitive/inappropriate (Boris). Both of these men have numerous people on hand advising them and it's inevitably their own contributions that get them into trouble.

Jalima1108 Wed 29-Nov-17 18:33:59

iyswim

Jalima1108 Wed 29-Nov-17 18:33:44

We are inviting the POTUS not the person who is holding that office at any given moment in time.

Jalima1108 Wed 29-Nov-17 18:33:05

pillock a stupid person

it is a bit of an understatement

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 18:29:37

Oh dear pillock sounds a bit endearing really.

Luckygirl Wed 29-Nov-17 18:26:01

I really do not see the point of bringing up unacceptable actions in the past that we all feel uncomfortable about and feel angry about.

That does not make DT any less of a pillock in the here and now.

We cannot refuse him a state visit because in the near future we will need US markets even more than now.
