Has the Conservative Party lost all sense of competence

This is not an attack on individuals but on the ethos of conservatism. Since the war the CP has created the myth that they are competent. Recently we have seen:

Incompetence with the economy.
Incompetence with benefits
Incompetence with state pensions
Incompetence with support for business and industry via infrastructure
Incompetence in many areas with government administration
Incompetence with transport
Incompetence in the criminal justice system
Incompetence in defence
Incompetence in education
Incompetence in the NHS
Incompetence in running their own election

I am sure there are other areas. Why does anyone vote for this incompetence? Surely we deserve better?

Plots to remove Theresa May are building within the parliamentary Tory party This is an interesting article telling us more about the machinations within the Conservative Party. I find it even more interesting that a current affairs weekly publication can feel so out of date this week because May and the Tories are just so incompetent that this has been overwhelmed by the current chaos they have managed to cause with Carillion.

Who knows really Paddyann. I agree entirely.

paddyann Fri 19-Jan-18 21:00:05

can I ask all you who live south of the border, what are the REAL chances of Boris taking over from May should she resign or get sacked ? Frankly it scares the bejesus out of me as my ould Irish granny would have said .There would be matching mop topped seriously mentally deranged walking mouths on both sides of the Atlantic and I dont know if the world could survive them.

Perhaps he's changed his mind, after all, it was a tough decision, apparently.
(about the EU)

durhamjen Fri 19-Jan-18 19:39:50

Good heavens, Jalima, it has been considered!

Can you imagine what people would say about a bridge between Morocco and Gibraltar, and then another one from Gibraltar to Spain?
At least they will stop lots of those drownings in the Mediterranean.

However, not through the busiest shipping lane in the world

It seems a strange idea for a staunch Brexiteer is all I can say.

durhamjen Fri 19-Jan-18 19:20:00

Considering that Boris and his mates have just burnt 27 other bridges ....
Do you think his next Big Boris Brainwave will be a tunnel under the Atlantic?

Some more ideas for Boris.

durhamjen Fri 19-Jan-18 18:17:33

This is the one that I thought was a bit over the top, GracesGran.

Some people are very clever Jen. The newsthump articles made me chuckle. Just enough of the truth to make you laugh - although the prospect of Boris in any capacity doesn't usually have that effect!

Can we have extra money for out armed forces? No.

A massive bridge across the channel? Of course! A great idea.

The Tories want to lose the next election”

Another gem from potty mouth when looking at water cannon use.

“Splat The chavs”

How much tax payers money was wasted on the other bridge dreamt up by the idiot? At leas5 £37million at last count.

French TV2 last night interviewed May who refused to say that she would vote for Brexit in another referendum.

Johnson’s bridge and headlines in a dumbed down Torygraph is merely a distraction from Macon’s advise that the uks financial services cannot be addressed unless part of the singl3market.

It will never happen, just like the fools idea of a Thames estuary airport. Ignore the clown.

Tegan2 Fri 19-Jan-18 12:48:04

Given that Boris Johnson wants to build a bridge to Europe (which I thought was fake news but doesn't appear to be so) and given that, as a Labour voter I've been quite open about my reservations about their leadership, would any Conservative voter on here be honest and say some of the people running this country totally useless?

MaizieD Fri 19-Jan-18 10:19:18

If the Carillion scandal was caused by back handers from Carillion boss to the Conservative Party is this not corruption?

It's not exactly 'backhanders' because donations to political parties are entirely legitimate; it's the only way they have, apart from membership fees, of raising money to finance their operations. But it does look very like corruption when companies and individuals are paying very large amounts of money (£25,000 in some cases) to belong to 'donor clubs' which guarantee them direct access to members of the government. And it is equally so if large donations to other parties, such as union donations to Labour, give them preferential access.

As I said earlier in this thread, I think that state funded parties might well be the way to go, with no additional donations, apart from realistic (i.e not highly inflated) membership fees, allowed. It would create a more level playing field and promote a more democratic access to 'power'.

millie yes! They are definately having a run for their money with social media where folk are able to read news with a different spin to that put out by the far right wing press with not so hidden agendas.

It is like a breath of fresh air!

milliespain Fri 19-Jan-18 10:09:04

I also would like to think that politicians do read and take note of the opinions expressed in gransnet,

milliespain Fri 19-Jan-18 10:05:35

Having read many of these opinions it is refreshing to see such insight and outspoken enlightenment which is normally suppressed by the popular media (more specifically media barons) of the far right press.

alexa if a crime has been committed then hopefully it will come in in an enquiry. Rest assured however that those involved will be busy covering their backs and trying to get rid of all evidence.

Alexa Fri 19-Jan-18 09:45:12

If the Carillion scandal was caused by back handers from Carillion boss to the Conservative Party is this not corruption? And the permitting of large sums of money being given by private individuals or corporations to a political party---should that be a crime? Is it a crime and if not why not?

This country needs a written constitution.

whitewave Fri 19-Jan-18 09:25:17

Fraud exists now of course. Corruption of course can be prosecuted.

We shall wait and see.

But I think it is probably down to this government’s incompetence, which whilst not a crime has tragic implication for many small firms and individuals let alone the tax payer.
