Wally I don't know how old you are but you probably grew up in a socialist country where healthcare, living conditions and workers' welfare were seen as priorities. It did work. It led to the beginnings of a more equal society. Of course as dj says the last 30 years have been spent eroding it and selling off whatever could be. I don't think that is what Corbyn is advocating - do you? Democratic socialism suits some countries very well and it certainly suits the poor, less able and disadvantaged better than modern capitalism as practiced by the Tories and the odd Labour government for the last 30 years. That is and has just made the rich richer - that's why they persuade people like you to vote for it - so they can go on getting richer on the backs of the poor.

Perhaps this question should be the other way round.
The Conservative Party can only lose its sense of competence if it had one in the first place.
It certainly had a sense of entitlement, particularly the government, which it is hanging onto, unfortunately.

So hypocritical to set up these commissions with worthy objectives and then deliberately prevent them achieving anything.

Don’t forget that Adonis is to the right, so it just shows how far towards the extremists May has gone.

I think that what we have to take from this is that the Government will allow no crticism whatsoever. There is no alternative but to resign in order to be heard.

So Lord Adonis resigned from his cross party National Infrastructure Commission and Alan Milburn resigned (with the rest) from the Social Mobility Commission only a few weeks ago.

Both are saying that their recommendations were being ignored and even obstructed by a Government that only pays lip service to equality issues across the country (and in Lord Adonis's view is obsessed by achieving a Brexit that will damage the UK for generations).

But it is a sad loss when cross-Party groups full of talented, dedicated people, are unable to make progress with these important social and economic issues.

Does resigning make this worse? Should they keep battling on to make their point of view heard? Or does the resignation itself achieve the public outcry the issues deserve?
