That is one really worthwhile U-turn Jen. Such a pity they had to be forced into it - although no surprise. Is the real Tory party finally getting some control over the alt-right?
Enjoy the Antiques Road Trip except ...
This is not an attack on individuals but on the ethos of conservatism. Since the war the CP has created the myth that they are competent. Recently we have seen:
Incompetence with the economy.
Incompetence with benefits
Incompetence with state pensions
Incompetence with support for business and industry via infrastructure
Incompetence in many areas with government administration
Incompetence with transport
Incompetence in the criminal justice system
Incompetence in defence
Incompetence in education
Incompetence in the NHS
Incompetence in running their own election
I am sure there are other areas. Why does anyone vote for this incompetence? Surely we deserve better?

I am so cross, I will vote Labour in the election. Bring it on.
Please somebody tell me that this is fake news - I can't believe that it is for real.

If I was a Tory voter I would be absolutely furious at the way Tories have increased public spending only to give taxpayers money to their cronies and donors, whilst at the same time slashing the services to those it was meant for.
It is fraudulent.
Sodexo and probation, whitewave.
I wonder how much money we the tax payer have coughed up since June 2016 totally needlessly, like Brexit, rail bailout Carillion etc. I’m sure others can think of more.
"Tory ministers have U-turned over a bill to give three million people a chance to live in a decent home.
Despite twice voting against a law to give tenants the legal right to challenge landlords, they have finally caved in.
Secretary of State for Housing Sajid Javid said: “Government will support new legislation that requires all landlords to ensure properties are safe and give tenants the right to take legal action if landlords fail in their duties.”
When Sajid Javid and other Tories voted down this Labour proposal in Parliament two years ago they described it as ‘unnecessary regulation’ which ‘will deter investment and put up rents’.
But the writing was on the wall even before the tragedy at Grenfell Tower after private landlord bodies backed Labour’s plan, exposing the Tory opposition as evidence-free, ideological nonsense."
Another government u-turn.
Possibly because everyone saw the hypocrisy in putting Brandon Lewis in charge of housing policy, when he is a landlord, and one of those who voted it down two years ago.
Still a Labour policy, brought in by Karen Buck.
Anyone think May is going to announce an election soon?
Or the economy! Self interest - and they’d be top of the class
It's the poor employees and the taxpayers who pick up all the fall-out from these Conservative experiments. I wonder who every thought that the Tories knew anything about business?
Apparently last May they gave out large dividends to their shareholders. Perhaps they need to be given back as well.
I wonder how much donation they’ve given to the Tories?
Perhaps they could give it back to the pension fund.
I think that if anyone still wanted proof of the incompetence of the Conservative government and their misplaced love of the private sector we have it today with the Carillion sadly.
The government seems to have ignored it's own rules. One profit warning is supposed to trigger the appointment of a Crown representative. Not only did they not do this but three profit warnings appear to have encouraged - you have to ask about the simple ability of those involved and those signing this off - the awarding of three more contracts.
We will no doubt hear more during the day. What I think we have to ask is whether the Conservative party, at least as it is now - the party of the old and frightened - is fit for purpose as a government, not just now but in the future. Does, in fact, the Conservative Party actually have a future?

Another waste of our money.
So reading social media about Carillion.
Opinions summed up
Taxpayers and poor bailed out the bankers after the crash.
Banks are refusing Carillions bail out plan and asking the taxpayer to cough up again
So profits are private but the risk belongs to the taxpayer.

It depends whose side you are on asd to whether this is competent or not; not to most people.
I wonder if it was intentional.
There is some interesting information beginning to emerge over last weeks shamboshuffle.
I see the DUP leader Arlene Foster has written a paper instructing the government on phase 2 of the Brexit negotiation.
I suspect they are relieved to receive their instructions as groping in the dark is no fun.
The father of the house Ken Clarke has written about the most chaotic government of his career.
“We are proceeding on the basis that no one knows what is going to happen in the next fortnight”
Maybot tweeted today claiming something that the Tories hav3 done when in fact it is a EU law
LIES MAYBOT
“From today we are banning hidden charges for paying with your debit or credit card.
-a move that will help millions of people avoid rip-off fees when spending their hard earned money”
WITH THANKS TO THE EU.
Do not take us for fools - Tory idiots
I think you were right too, varian
Over the years there have been some policies which seriously alarmed me when I first heard about them -
-forcing councils to sell council houses and forbiding them from using the money to replace them,
- privatising the profitable parts of public enterprise whilst continuing subsidies,
-PFI which means passing on debt to future generations and enriching private companies,
- free schools which means allowing people to set up schools where they are not needed and giving undue influence to some very dubious people and companies.
I can remember having a nasty sense of forboding when I first heard of all these policies and now we can judge the results, I think my instinct was right.
Whitewave, I see Eric Pickles is to be one of those Lords, as the Tories will need street fighters in the Lords. I am sure he feels really happy about that description.
Carillion was part of a consortium that won a big HS2 contract last year, too.
I wonder what will happen there.

Labour would bring PFI back under government control.

John Healey, the shadow health secretary, said earlier this month: "There is definitely a case for saying we were poor at PFI, poor at negotiating PFI contracts from the outset."
Andy Burnham, a former health secretary who is now shadow education secretary, said last year: "We made mistakes. I'm not defending every pen stroke of the PFI contracts we signed."
Are we carrying on down the same road with blinkers?
