More Brexit lunacy

£490 million wasted spent on changing the colour of our passports. Which we could have done at any time in the last 30 years. Burgundy wasn't obligatory; not every EU country has a burgundy passport.

How many more £millions is this futile Brexit exercise going to cost the UK?

Somewhat ironic that the new blue is very similar to the colour of the EU flag...

durhamjen Mon 05-Feb-18 12:58:51

Sounds like a customs union to me.
Barnier is on his way to Downing Street now, so maybe it will be clearer after he has got rid of the extraneous words.

suzied Mon 05-Feb-18 12:53:20

Anyone like to explain what this means??? from HM Government
“A new customs partnership with the EU, aligning our approach to the customs border in a way that removes the need for a UK-EU customs border; [this would] involve the UK mirroring the EU’s requirements for imports from the rest of the world where their final destination is the EU. This is of course unprecedented as an approach and could be challenging to implement and we will look to explore the principles of this with business and the EU." UK Government Policy Paper

I wonder how exchanging the EU for right wing American influence benefits the UK?
Or Russian influence.
Here's someone who bankrolled Brexit.

badboysofbrexit.com/2018/01/02/george-cottrell/
Convicted fraudster,

"Previously, Cottrell had worked in banking, specialising in “offshore investment” and boasting about his expertise in money laundering. According to former Ukip candidate William Cash, it was Cottrell’s knowledge of “the murky and complicated world of shadow banking, secret offshore accounts and sophisticated financial structures” that landed him his role at Ukip."

Britain First support Mogg.

A real charmer isn’t he?

Mogg Met Bannon last week, I suspect that they are in constant communication along with Farage of course.

Mogg has gone to various Nazi type political party meetings. When called out he said he had no idea that they were Nazi leaning. Yeh right we were all born yesterday Mogg thug.

durhamjen Mon 05-Feb-18 11:43:26

"Perhaps Rees-Mogg sees Brexit as an essential way of avoiding planned new EU regulations aimed at governing the behaviour of companies such as his own. He has also enthused about the potential to slash environmental and safety laws after Britain leaves the EU. Regulations that were “good enough for India” could be good enough for Britain, he has argued, saying that the UK could go “a very long way” to cutting EU standards.

In November 2017, Rees-Mogg met with the extreme right-wing ideologue Steve Bannon. Bannon’s sidekick, the former Ukip leadership candidate Raheem Kassam, said that “the discussions focused on how we move forward with winning for the conservative movements on both sides of the pond, how you build movements, on the ground and digitally.” Kassam also noted that “Brexit and the election of President Trump were inextricably linked.” "

For those who think Rees-Mogg is the saviour.
White-shirt man, one of his followers who was seen hitting a woman in the face at last Friday's UWE meeting, has also been photographed in a Nazi uniform.

Anyone got any idea how to resolve the Irish border?

If so please send them to 10 Downing Street Westminster Central London.

All ideas will be very welcome

Thank you

jura2 Mon 05-Feb-18 11:24:15

Dream team- the scariest thing I've seen in a very very long time sad

suzied Mon 05-Feb-18 10:58:08

If we are not in the customs union what is happening to the Irish border? Still no answer on that one. Will N Ireland be treated differently from the rest of the U.K. ? I thought they didn’t want that. Maybe it’ll just be a customs union with a different name to satisfy the Brexiteers.

MamaCaz Mon 05-Feb-18 09:50:41

Perhaps they meant 'nightmare'? grin

durhamjen Mon 05-Feb-18 09:40:15

Only the Times could call Mogg, Johnson and Gove a dream team, too.

durhamjen Sun 04-Feb-18 23:58:32

This is lunacy as well. Why do they have to use words like surrender and battle?

uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-rudd/uk-will-not-surrender-over-bespoke-brexit-deal-with-eu-minister-idUKKBN1FO08O

That's not working with the EU to get the best deal ever.

durhamjen Sun 04-Feb-18 22:40:50

Brilliant, the Tories have a secret plan to sort Brexit. Front page of the Times.

Anyone think that Murdoch has it in for the government because they won't let him take over Sky?

durhamjen Sun 04-Feb-18 22:32:13

Good, wasn't it, Mamacaz. However, as was said it needs someone bold to say so.
Someone whose electorate voted to remain, and who is not afraid of losing his seat, or someone who is leaving at the next election, anyway, so it doesn't matter.
Wasn't sure about the Rees-Mogg one, but Brexit is his baby just as much as Boris's and Gove's.

By the way, did you know that the first person to swing a punch at the UWE meeting was one of Rees-Mogg's followers? The man in the white shirt hitting a woman has been recognised.

whitewave Sun 04-Feb-18 21:42:15

The government is still clueless.

Rudd “ We will be negotiating to have some sort of customs union”

Raab “We will not be any sort of customs union”

Desperate isn’t it?

whitewave Sun 04-Feb-18 21:37:14

Given that they are in the vast majority, I can’t think what is stopping them

I particularly like this extract from your last link:

But surely, if the soft Brexiters are going to win the battle in Cabinet, they should lie and cheat like the hard Brexiters? Not so. If they fight on turf where the hard Brexiters are experts, they’ll be at a disadvantage. They need to embrace honesty as a tactic in asymmetric warfare, saying something like this:

“We respect the voters’ wishes and, unless they change their minds, we’ll try to deliver the best Brexit possible. But we’re not going to con the people. If we go hard, we’ll damage the economy and our precious United Kingdom. If we go soft, we’ll move from being one of Europe’s most influential powers to being a rule-taker. Neither is great but we think the soft option would make the best of a bad job.”

If they were really bold, soft Brexiters would add:

“And, of course, if voters don’t like that, it’s not too late to stay in the EU.”

Though I won't be holding my breath!

whitewave Sun 04-Feb-18 20:55:22

The Bank of England have warned the loons that there will be no bonfire of Regulations after Brexit.

That won’t please them

durhamjen Sun 04-Feb-18 19:41:55

infacts.org/cabinet-softies-make-honesty-watchword/

Who do you think will win in the cabinet committee this week?

durhamjen Sun 04-Feb-18 19:38:52

Watch and wait, like the labour party is doing.

durhamjen Sun 04-Feb-18 11:54:36

SinEU

Stay in EU.

mostlyharmless Sun 04-Feb-18 11:24:12

I admit its not easy to think of a catchy anti-Brexit (or soft Brexit) name for the group dj. Lots of groups have what I think are ambiguous names such as "Open Britain" (used by an anti- Brexit group AND a pro Brexit group) and "Best for Britain" (could be interpreted in very different ways). Any reference to Customs Unions would be confusing -as we've seen in this thread.

"Just staying in"? "Let's keep the benefits of the EU"? Both terrible suggestions.

Any gransnetters with ideas?

"Modern trade deals aren't just about tariffs and quotas. From the food we eat to the health care that we receive, trade deals affect every single one of us.

Fox's Trade Bill sets a precedent for all future UK trade deals. And we've already seen what they could look like. Over the last four years, millions of us around Europe came together to defeat the toxic US-EU trade deal TTIP, which would have allowed US multinationals to sue European governments for simply passing environmental legislation. And it would likely have seen more chlorine, hormone and steroid packed meat on our supermarket shelves.

If we don't stop this trade bill proposal, your MP will be giving Liam Fox a blank cheque for negotiating trade deals like TTIP and we're likely to see the end of the NHS and our chicken, beef and vegetables filled with chlorine, hormones and GM.

And it's not just bad news for us here in the UK. Fox's trade policy has mockingly been labelled 'Empire 2.0' by some of his own civil servants. And they are not far from the truth. Liam Fox has already set up secretive 'trade working groups' with human rights-abusing countries like Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Just a few months ago Liam Fox paid a visit to the murderous regime of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, who compares himself to Hitler, telling the press of our "shared values".

If we're not careful, the trade deals we sign will end up threatening access to life-saving medicines in India, human rights in the Gulf and elsewhere and a fair food system in Africa."

I hope nobody wants this.

Any suggestions, mostlyharmless? Remembering, of course, that it is cross-party and not a separate party.
