Guess how much the Queen's alarm clock costs.

You'll never guess so I'll tell you. She is woken every morning by a piper who plays for 15 minutes. The piper is a Pipe Major paid by the British army and seconded to the Royal Household. A Pipe Major isn't technically a major but a sergeant so looking at the pay scale for 2017/18 last year the Pipe Major cost £33490 to £47895 depending on where he is on the scale.

I also read about this years ago and don't begrudge HM one bit. If she enjoys being woken up by bagpipes then good luck to her. Obviously it's not his only duties.

I heard about this years ago but thought it was at Balmoral.
I like to hear the pipes!

All these mean responses surprised me more than the actual post!

Waste of money, get an alarm clock. I like the royal family and tradition, but cuts have to be made across the board.

Sorry! I didn't think I had made it personal. Just thought you'd like a flavour of how Army musicians are used. My apologies?

vampirequeen Tue 20-Feb-18 20:08:41

Again why make it personal. I don't think it's a good use of public money. That's my opinion. I haven't criticised or been rude to anyone who has disagreed with me.

My daughter was a member of the Scots Guards and a volinist. She was also the leader of the orchestra and played at banquets, investitures, garden parties and in addition led a quartet which played at the Queens private dinner parties. She was also a soloist at the Edinburgh Festival and various foreign locations including Australia. She played during state visits for Putin, Clinton, Obama and various other heads of state and worked at various locations during the Queens Jubilee. When marching or on duty outside Buckingham Palace, Windsor or in the Scottish castles she played the saxophone. This was her main job, although of course she was also a serving soldier who had frequent fitness tests, target practice, etc. and could be called on to fight although (I am very grateful) this never happened. So basically that is what she was paid for by the Army, although if someone wanted to hire the orchestra privately a fee was charged and she would receive payment from that. She lived in "quarters" with her husband (also a soldier) and paid rent, and when at work in the barracks had a subsidised canteen. Her salary was not amazing. I believe the Piper is engaged to work on the same basis, and playing first thing in the morning for the Queen is merely PART of his daily duties - not ALL of them. So no reason to get excited Vampirequeen!

3rd time lucky. Bring, not brung

Abbeygran Tue 20-Feb-18 19:32:24

*bribg, not brung!

Abbeygran Tue 20-Feb-18 19:32:03

I’m more than happy for my taxes to pay for this sort of thing. And I do believe that the royals brung in much more than they cost via tourism.

Peardrop50 Tue 20-Feb-18 18:25:43

It’s heartening to read that so many of us love our hard working, selfless queen and that we support our wonderful armed services.
Love the sound of the pipes and a visit to the Edinburgh Tattoo is on my bucket list.

I agree VQ - Not with your op but that Hairspray's remark is out of order. Can't we be civilised? I have no problem with the Queen's bagpiper but personal abuse to other posters is uncalled for.

vampirequeen Tue 20-Feb-18 17:29:19

Your comment is out of order, Hairspray. I may disagree with people but I'm never rude to them.

Hairspray Tue 20-Feb-18 16:56:36

Why are you awake during daylight hours? Oh do go back to sleep Vampirequeen.

jollyg Tue 20-Feb-18 16:44:33

The Queen is worth every penny we spend on her.

A pearl beyond price.

How do you price devotion to her role? and being a good grandmother. Priceless

merlotgran Tue 20-Feb-18 16:27:54

Sunset, played by the Royal Marines always has me in tears.

Greyduster Tue 20-Feb-18 16:25:41

The Royal Marines Band has no equal IMHO!

grannybuy Tue 20-Feb-18 16:20:54

The Royal Marine band concerts are great!

Aepgirl Tue 20-Feb-18 15:20:01

I hope the Queen is also provided with earplugs! I can't think of anything worse than being woken to the sound of bagpipes.

Hairspray Tue 20-Feb-18 14:47:55

Oh! Did I post a similar message twice! I must have nodded off!

Hairspray Tue 20-Feb-18 14:46:13

Oh just go back to sleep you silly Vampire! How can you hear or even be interested in what goes on in daylight hours?
This has nothing to do with you!!

Hairspray Tue 20-Feb-18 14:40:00

Oh just go back to sleep you silly Vampire! Why would you be hearing or even interested about what goes on in daylight hours?

Lilyflower Tue 20-Feb-18 14:26:41

When you think of the billions of pounds the Royal family has brought into the country in tourist pounds, not to mention the decades of political and national stability over which the Queen has presided, a picturesque alarm clock does not seem overly expensive.

Imagine the self important aggrandisement of a President Blair, for example, as an alternative.

missdeke Tue 20-Feb-18 13:53:49

Glad to hear so many really don't get excited about this. I've sometimes wondered if there is something lacking in my makeup as I often find it hard to get het up/offended/excited by something (not just this) that others seem to take to heart.

Emptynester Tue 20-Feb-18 13:33:02

In the grand scheme of things with Brexit, Child abuse, those poor young footballers abuse by a person in a position of trust, the endless loss of young life in schools in America etc, etc, then no, she is more than welcome to him.
