Labour shifts to back a customs union with EU after Brexit (Sky News)

news.sky.com/story/labour-shifts-to-back-a-customs-union-with-eu-after-brexit-11267193

Sir Keir Starmer Labours Shadow Brexit secretary said Labour had "unanimously" agreed at a meeting last week to "develop" their Brexit policy.

He said: "It's a customs union… there's going to have to be a new agreement, but will it do the work of the current customs union? Yes, that's the intention."

Sir Keir admitted Labour's position means it will have to be "negotiated" as to who is in control of Britain's trade policy after Brexit.

He said: "We will have to have a say but the real point is - because we all want trade agreements, we all want more trade agreements - are we more likely to get them if we do it jointly with the EU or on our own?

From Labour Leave. (below) The Andrew Marr interview.

Marr: After we leave, who will be in charge of trade policy?

Starmer: That will have to be negotiated.

"Keir_Starmer confirms a Labour government would sell out the British public on Brexit and tie us into a protectionist Customs Union with the EU. Shameful!"

Makes it more difficult for the reindeer. Wonder if th3 moss is harvested?

GracesGranMK2 Wed 28-Feb-18 09:23:33

I'm not sure anyone would notice Jen. All would go on just as it is.

I would hope they would send a St Bernard complete with barrel out for him though.

whitewave Wed 28-Feb-18 09:22:51

I wonder how the Sami are doing? Still I suppose they are better at coping than all of us.

lemongrove Wed 28-Feb-18 09:19:31

You could go sledging there for a change dj ! Such fun.

durhamjen Wed 28-Feb-18 09:16:17

What would happen if Davis was lost in a blizzard?
Over half term Norway had the most snow it had had for 30 years.

whitewave Wed 28-Feb-18 09:11:37

I find it a tad worrying as I’m beginning to see more and more that it will be either a cliff edge, and we have no idea how bad that will be except it will be a catastrophe or remain.

Which unless it is voted on would not be democratic imo

What a mess it all is.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 28-Feb-18 09:05:17

The FT article has been in the Paper Review Jen. They are saying Davis "hasn't been spotted since November" Barnier is suggesting it would be a good thing if DD went and had a chat with him. Apparently Davis has been going around Europe trying to talk to Foreign Ministers. Let's hope they have more about them than Boris!

"Mr Davis's absence from Brussels in recent months has triggered suggestions that Oliver Robbins, Mrs May's Brexit advisor, is doing more of the heavy lifting. Mr Davis is on a tour of Nordic countries this week ... "

durhamjen Wed 28-Feb-18 08:25:31

Not a democracy if you can't change your mind.

Wally Wed 28-Feb-18 08:23:26

I'm off this is getting silly as all of us are entrenched in our views. The British people voted for brexit of which I'm one and I very much hope it happens.

Wally Wed 28-Feb-18 08:20:36

durhamjen You've more than met your match.

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 23:24:39

Perhaps he's hiding from this man.

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 23:18:15

Why did Davis not show up?
And why wasn't it mentioned on the news?
Or did I miss it?

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 23:13:03

Hopefully he's too busy to notice Gransnet, Maizie.
He doesn't need to instruct lawyers of his own, does he?

GracesGranMK2 Tue 27-Feb-18 23:07:52

Watch out for "Common Regulatory Space". It is one suggestion for the whole of Ireland but the DUP are never going to wear that, surely.

MaizieD Tue 27-Feb-18 22:28:48

I'm a bit concerned at Day6s apparently unsubstantiated slagging off of DAG.

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 22:17:14

Of course the irony didn't escape me, Day6. That's why I said it.
I note you didn't deny it, though.

MaizieD Tue 27-Feb-18 22:11:51

Thanks for that, Petra. I retract my supposition.

I've spent a happy hour looking at the EU and Africa trade dealings. I suspect it's more complex than it's made out to be. But I haven't finished yet.

MaizieD Tue 27-Feb-18 22:09:06

And now the details of David Allen Green's involvement with the EU gravy train please, Day6

Day6 Tue 27-Feb-18 21:48:27

'It was Day6 who got it wrong in the first place.
She was too busy changing her mind about who to slag off to notice properly.'

Says the woman (DJ) slagging off another.
The irony probably escapes her.

grin Pot, kettle, black, etc.

Day6 Tue 27-Feb-18 21:44:58

"Extraordinary then that they have caved in to every EU request."

That is interesting Maisie.

You must be a fly on the wall with inside information. Please tell us how May and co have 'caved in' to Brussels?

Do we have an agreement with the EU? I think not.

Whether Corbyn, May or A N Other were charged with negotiating our exit from the EU, I would expect them to ensure we didn't become (as has been mentioned today) a 'colony' of the EU. Many could charge the Prime Minister with being too keen to establish a friendly farewell but one would hope she isn't dancing to Juncker and Barnier's tune. That toxic relationship is one we want to end.

petra Tue 27-Feb-18 21:36:25

MaizieD
Assumptions on your part about me.
I started my apprenticeship at 15 in the printing trade and became a union member until I was in my 50s.
I was Mother of the chapel in several companies.
My OH was a very active union official and has been a Labour Party member all his working life.

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 20:42:59

It was Day6 who got it wrong in the first place.
She was too busy changing her mind about who to slag off to notice properly.

I wonder who will be first to criticise Jennie Formby for standing for Labour general secretary.
I think she will be a brilliant choice.

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 20:36:06

maize have just read your post!!
I should have said Sir Martin Donnelly blush

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 20:33:04

Watching last nights Newsnight - Sarah Wollastone -supporter of the Customs Union, was extremely interesting.

Particularly over the 62 trying to hold May hostage, and the difficulties that will be faced by industry if we fail to stay with a Customs Union.

MaizieD Tue 27-Feb-18 20:32:40

Whats a silly, infantile remark. Greene was on the EU gravy train

It wasn't said by Green.

And Green is neutral about Brexit- he just has a good nose for bullshit...

And, where is the justification for your assertion that he was 'on the EU gravy train'?

I don't see anything about it in this outline of his career:

After being awarded the Sir Thomas More and Hardwicke Scholarships by Lincoln's Inn,[9] Green was called to the Bar in 1999[9] and became a solicitor in 2001.[9] Formerly a lawyer at Baker McKenzie, Herbert Smith, and the Treasury Solicitor, he is now (and since 2009) head of the media practice at Preiskel & Co.[2]

He was involved on a pro bono basis with Simon Singh's successful libel defence campaign against the British Chiropractic Association.[2]

In 2010, he advised Sally Bercow over possible libel action by think tank MigrationWatch UK and their chairman Sir Andrew Green which was later dropped.[12][13]

He led the defence in the Twitter Joke Trial,[14] in which defendant Paul Chambers was acquitted on 27 July 2012.
