Labour shifts to back a customs union with EU after Brexit (Sky News)

news.sky.com/story/labour-shifts-to-back-a-customs-union-with-eu-after-brexit-11267193

Sir Keir Starmer Labours Shadow Brexit secretary said Labour had "unanimously" agreed at a meeting last week to "develop" their Brexit policy.

He said: "It's a customs union… there's going to have to be a new agreement, but will it do the work of the current customs union? Yes, that's the intention."

Sir Keir admitted Labour's position means it will have to be "negotiated" as to who is in control of Britain's trade policy after Brexit.

He said: "We will have to have a say but the real point is - because we all want trade agreements, we all want more trade agreements - are we more likely to get them if we do it jointly with the EU or on our own?

From Labour Leave. (below) The Andrew Marr interview.

Marr: After we leave, who will be in charge of trade policy?

Starmer: That will have to be negotiated.

"Keir_Starmer confirms a Labour government would sell out the British public on Brexit and tie us into a protectionist Customs Union with the EU. Shameful!"

Strange the EU don't think that May and pals have offered an extremely generous divorce settlement.
In fact, May hasn't offered anything yet apart from weasel words.
She's going to make her offer on Friday, unless she goes off in a sulk having read what the EU say tomorrow.

Nothing emotive about what I said. May has threatened the EU. Corbyn and his team have been talking reasonably to the EU team.

You make it sound as though the intransigent, pig-headed EU negotiators have been bullied! Pathetic Remainer attitude.

I've just remembered why I don't normally answer your posts Day6.

Sir Martin Green was one of the most senior civil servants, with years more experience day in and day out of the subject than any single member of the government

I assume he knows something about the EU and Britain’s place in the world.

That they want the best deal for Britain means they are STANDING UP for the UK against Barnier and co.

Extraordinary then that they have caved in to every EU request.

It's really interesting how people can put entirely different interpretations on the same event...

Another take on that could be Corbn and team have been trying to undermine the British Government

They are part of the British Government Day 6. Democracy is quite important to most of us and, as right as the current Conservatives might be I wouldn't suspect more than a couple of them as being fellow travellers with fascists so hopefully both sides of Parliament will still be recognised as "Government" for some time.

Some people might be interested in the fact that 1000s of tonnes of over produced food in the eu is sold onto Africa, therefore local producers can't compete.

That doesn't alter the fact that most of Africa trades tariff free with the EU. There's nothing to 'believe' about it, it's a fact.

If you post a link I'll have a look at the Trade Unions against the EU stuff. (though I've never put you down as being open to influence by trade unions)

"Because Corbyn's Brexit team have been having reasonable discussions with Barnier and others in the EU for quite a time?
They haven't been threatening the EU like May and team."

Oooh emotive language DJ. hmm

Another take on that could be Corbn and team have been trying to undermine the British Government charged with the business of extricating us from the EU.

Mrs May and team have been negotiating with Brussels and have already offered an extremely generous divorce settlement. That they want the best deal for Britain means they are STANDING UP for the UK against Barnier and co.

You make it sound as though the intransigent, pig-headed EU negotiators have been bullied! Pathetic Remainer attitude.

Corbyn is happy to sell us down the river to get his feet under the table at Number Ten Downing St.

It seems to have been a remark understood by many and very evocative of the possible situation Day6. I don't think anything can take away the fact that he has a great deal of knowledge about the subject and concern for the country. He is a reasonable source of information and throwing slurs in his direction doesn't negate that. Of course there may be another reputable source that says something different - that is how debate occurs - but I haven't seen anyone tell us about it on here.

"On leaving the single market and customs union being like "giving up a three course meal for a promise of a packet of crisps in the future"

Whats a silly, infantile remark. Greene was on the EU gravy train. Of course he wants the perks to continue. Vested interest much? It would be interesting if all supporter of the EU were enforced to reveal their affiliations and links, wouldn't it?

Lucrative self interest drives a lot of Remainers.

Murray is know as a 'lexist' a left wing advocate of Brexit.
I like what he said at the Labour Party conference in 2012.
He compared the actions of eurozone governments enacting austerity policies at the behest of Brussels and the IMF to the vishy regime in France in the 2nd world war.
He's not all bad then grin

suzied Tue 27-Feb-18 19:43:07

I wonder what his stance on Lenin and Trotsky is?

GracesGranMK2 Tue 27-Feb-18 19:41:23

Definitely a bit extreme Wally. Luckily your is just one view - on here at least.

Sleep well - and calmly.

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:38:27

I'm off everyone sleep tight.

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:35:45

suzied This is documented fact not fiction.

suzied Tue 27-Feb-18 19:31:11

Did he support the Spanish Inquisition as well?

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:29:13

Be very careful what you wish for folks.

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:28:12

It's the absolute truth whitewave

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 19:26:50

Bit OTT wally

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:19:44

He was a Stalin apologist.

suzied Tue 27-Feb-18 19:17:17

I didn’t know Stalin was still in power.

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 19:14:18

Calm down, wally. Lots of people are trying to become general secretary.

Consultant for what?

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:10:06

The extreme left takeover of the Labour Party continues unabated. Corbyn has just appointed an ex communist ( who are we kidding ex) Andrew Murray as his consultant. This is the same Andrew Murray who supported Stalin and North Korea. Momentums Jon lansman is trying to become party general secretary.

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 17:06:49

Better tell that to Fox then. He’s swallowed Adam Smith entirely

I prefer to read and believe 'Trade Unions Against the EU'
Some people might be interested in the fact that 1000s of tonnes of over produced food in the eu is sold onto Africa, therefore local producers can't compete.
Not everyone in Africa is happy with the 'free trade deals' they view it as more colonialism.
