Watching TM and the Queen lauding the Commonwealth and how much it means to them. Not to mention the job creation scheme for useless 70 odd year olds.

Ah, I did wonder what you'd done to deserve deletion Jalima. I've occasionally asked for one of my posts to be deleted and seem to recall the comment has been "post deleted at writer's request"
It has happened once before Iam64 - I asked for a post to be deleted (too much personal information) and got the same message! That was also at a weekend. Has this happened to anyone else?
Perhaps I should let them know.

Jalima, advice to the OP to take some Rennies grin

I don't see what the fuss is about to be honest. Charles will succeed his mother and become King and I assumed in that position he'd be head of the Commonwealth as well.

I imagine it was a matter of courtesy to inform rather than ask Heads of Commonwealth countries, but I imagine if anyone did have doubts it would have been raised already with the Queen. There's been no riding roughshod over the Commonwealth. This is a fuss about nothing, isn't it? confused

I have never been a great fan of Charles but as we were teenagers and young people together, I've had a bit of empathy for how tough it must have been to be him when the rest of us were growing our hair, talking about how easy world peace would be to achieve if only people all thought like we did. I'm sure his mother wouldn't have recommended him if she hadn't believed he shared her affection and commitment for the Commonwealth.

I have no idea why my deleted post says:
Message deleted by Gransnet. Here's a link to our Talk Guidelines. because in fact I asked for it to be deleted myself and it was not against any guidelines.

It was rather a long post explaining about The Commonwealth and wondering why Scottish posters who wish for independence would be so worried about who the next Head of the Commonwealth will be. As so many countries are happy to belong and more wish to join, I think they are the ones who may be interested and that the views of Scottish Nationalists or anti-royalists would be of little interest to members of The Commonwealth

Sorry if you are having a bilious attack maryeliza but I doubt you will get over it any time soon because you are vastly outnumbered.
Take some Rennies.

lemongrove Sat 21-Apr-18 21:22:33

True annie grin it’s a position.

M0nica Sat 21-Apr-18 19:30:18

paddyann you seem to think everyone in any position in any country anywhere is in awe of the Queen. I very much doubt that any of the various PMs would vote for PC just because his mother would like it if they didn't consider him up to the job. They need a figure head. Someone who will be well received and be prepared to host conferences and the like, but have not be from a Commonwealth country.

Your idea about what the place of the Royal family is in this country and how they are perceived and treated by others, harks back to the days of Empire. Not the 21st century.

Anniebach Sat 21-Apr-18 17:22:10

It isn't a job .

lemongrove Sat 21-Apr-18 17:15:30

I think he will be good in the job, and after all he has plenty
Of knowledge of what it entails. The Commonwealth Heads are obviously happy with it.

Chewbacca Sat 21-Apr-18 17:02:54

they could hardly say no.

Well, they could if they'd have felt as strongly about it as you and the OP paddyann, but clearly they didn't. Hence they said "yes". So that's all there is to it.

paddyann Sat 21-Apr-18 15:23:35

Would anyone else's adult son be happy for their mother to tout for a job in public for him? I wonder why he was confirmed in the position so fast...couldn't be because they dont want to offend his mama could it?
Its a totally ridiculous situation to put people in,but thats what royalty is all about isn't it...they could hardly say no !

Jalima1108 Sat 21-Apr-18 14:55:13

What a thoroughly nasty childish post Brid . I’m not bitter and twisted and you have no damn right to post such a personal attack
Judge not lest ye be judged

Granny 23 smile. It is quite ludicrous isn't it.

Chewbacca Sat 21-Apr-18 00:21:26

Dunno M0nica; best ask OP. Perhaps when she's feeling less billious she'll tell us.

M0nica Sat 21-Apr-18 00:00:31

He will not be running the Commonwealth. He will merely be the figure at the head. Since it is the Commonwealth leaders themselves who made that decision, why should we question it unless we have information that the head of commonwealth do not have do not have that shows that Prince Charles is unfitted for the job.

Chewbacca Fri 20-Apr-18 23:04:51

I too am pleased that Charles has got the job, in fact I can't think of anyone better suited. He's had a lifetime observing what it entails and I think will be as dedicated to the job as his mother has been.
And as for the "racist comments"..... utter codswallop.

Granny23 Fri 20-Apr-18 22:52:19

Of course Charles is the man for the job after all he is:

His Royal Highness The Prince Charles Philip Arthur George,
Prince of Wales,
Earl of Chester,
Duke of Cornwall,
Duke of Rothesay,
Earl of Carrick,
Baron of Renfrew,
Lord of the Isles,
Prince and Great Steward of Scotland,
Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter,
Extra Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle,
Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath,
Member of the Order of Merit,
Knight of the Order of Australia,
Companion of the Queen's Service Order,
Member of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council,
Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty
Field Marshal in the British Army,
Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal Navy and
Marshal of the Royal Air Force

With all that on his CV, I'm sure he will find running the Commonwealth a doddle.

Deedaa Fri 20-Apr-18 22:11:40

I frequently ask people where they or their families came from because I'm interested! People are interesting and if they have some sort of exotic background they are even more so. The alternative is to avoid anybody who looks at all "different" in case you say the wrong thing.

Baggs Fri 20-Apr-18 20:30:52

I didn't realise asking someone where they were from was racist. I've been asked it a lot.

MawBroon Fri 20-Apr-18 20:22:11

smile

maryeliza54 Fri 20-Apr-18 19:20:10

MB how terribly charming you are you are

maryeliza54 Fri 20-Apr-18 19:19:27

The woman it happened to was very critical about it - have you any idea how racist it is to discount her perception and opinions? The Equality Act makes it very clear that it is perception not intention that counts. He should know better

Bridgeit Fri 20-Apr-18 18:59:59

If he meant it the way you say he did. he would have asked her where she originated from. Most areas areas are split into towns cities etc, why are you deliberately trying to read racism into it .?

Anniebach Fri 20-Apr-18 18:56:57

Charles was meeting a room full of people, he had to shake hands, say a few words and move on. I do not believe it was a racist comment .

It has been said many times today queenie would not have said if she hadn't discussed it with the leaders first.

I have my own theory on why she said it ?
