Labour's plan for new Bank Holidays

Whilst I agree that there are not enough Bank Holidays (National Holidays?) this plan to make the 4 National Patron Saints' Days Bank holidays seems a bit daft considering that three of the Saints are in the first part of the year when we also have Easter and the Spring Bank holiday. I think we need some in the autumn and maybe February.

What does anyone else think?

GranVee What has your rant got to do with the subject matter of this thread, which is not so much should we have more bank holidays, but are patron saints days appropriate? I think you meant to post your rant on another thread. The one about Corbychev perchance.

Surely, people like you should read the DM. You would then know what it actually says when you condemn it. It would also show how your commitment to Labour is based on a broad knowledge of the political landscape in the country.

I alternate between reading the DM and reading the Guardian. It gives me a good broad picture and stops me committing myself to either of the 2 major parties.

It certaintly will not help things Maizie, fact - A & E are busier over bank holidays, surgeries are closed , schools are closed, benefit offices are closed

MaizieD Sun 29-Apr-18 11:45:11

Put it another way, Ab. How will it not help it?

Jalima1108 Sun 29-Apr-18 10:46:13

I will definitely try a bloater when we (eventually) get over to the East Coast for a holiday haporthrosie!

Anniebach Sun 29-Apr-18 10:43:13

How will four more bank holidays help the NHS, Education and housing ?

GranVee Sun 29-Apr-18 10:19:04

Cheap populist, jingoism, really. I am a member of that party and trust me I know exactly what I'm supporting. By populist do you mean someone who believes in looking after people less fortunate that me, in a good NHS, free education for all, affordable housing. Don't get me started. Daily Mail reader by any chance? I'm 68 and quite cynical when it comes to politics, but Corbyn is one of the most genuine people I have met. Rant over.

Oh Jalima you've no idea what you've missed ... I dream of them. One of the most soothing, subtle, and unique flavours ever. Just the tiniest bit smoky and gamey but in a soft way, if that makes any sense. Rich but delicate and satisfying in a different way from anything else. Even when they were still widely available they had something of the taste of memory about them. The magic of times past - time in its kindest form - and ... this sounds daft ... the essence of companionship. It's impossible to separate the taste-memory from the people you remember sharing them with. Only crumpets, proper old muffins, and Baxter's Potted Shrimps conjure up friend-and-family nostalgia in quite the same way. There was a spiritual quality to the humble bloater. (Not for nothing am I known as a daft ha'porth!) I feel a bit guilty whenever I eat fish fingers because they basically killed off the enormous bloater industry which gave employment to so many ... but at least I waited till it was basically dead and gone before I caved in to the clutch of the finger. Not that I don't adore them - especially in sandwich form! - but bloaters were from some magic realm. You know the feeling some old childhood book illustrations, or sepia photos, can surround you with? That's bloaters and bloater paste. I've heard there's one place left in Great Yarmouth that still has the real thing but I haven't been able to get there. I truly must make an effort and partake of the mystery again.

I really hope you don't go on a bloater-trek and then end up despising the things! blush

Jalima1108 Wed 25-Apr-18 23:54:03

I've never eaten a bloater.

My culinary education is sadly lacking.

haporthrosie Wed 25-Apr-18 23:50:16

'Collecting stones and winkle shells to take back home to Nan' sunshine

Knotted hankie's on me loaf and I'm ready!

Really like ideas of Harvest and Peace. MOnica's got a good point about food stupidity (she said, having just polished off a fish finger sarnie. But at least I know a cod piece from a bloater!)

I've never had the nerve to send them, but ages ago I wrote some song lyrics intended for Chas and Dave. blush As if they need anyone to write for them!

Off we go, singing roll or bowl a ball a new holiday ...

Apologies if you meant labour as in workforce and not 'Labour' as in Labour party Sleepygran.

However, I think that many of us have been part of the labour force during our working lives and are not therefore anti labour

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 23:13:35

Sorry posted too soon and no disrespect intended to you, but if this was the case your DH’s employers were breaking the law.

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 23:12:05

That’s complete rubbish sleepygran we are a very small (micro) business and the 20 days plus bank holidays have been in place for several years now.

Jalima1108 Wed 25-Apr-18 23:04:35

Lots of anti labour feeling here!
Only under the present leadership which is floundering Sleepygran!

Sleepygran Wed 25-Apr-18 10:07:29

Also I do understand pro rata holidays but I know many on 0 hours contracts who work more than 16 hours per week but they still get 0 hours holiday pay.

Sleepygran Wed 25-Apr-18 10:04:35

Gillybob,my husband only finished work in January this year, and these were his terms when he left. He worked for a contract company.
If you were lucky enough to work for a government organisation you got the right Terms and conditions. Contract companies seem to do what the like.

Situpstraight Wed 25-Apr-18 07:24:32

sleepygran only anti labour because of the party that has suggested it. My feeling would be the same whichever party wanted 4 extra Bank Holidays.

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 07:17:09

I think you’ll find that conditions have changed quite a bit since then sleepygran.
Minimum holiday entitlement is now 20 days plus bank holidays . Temp workers enjoy the same rights as those with permanent contract .

I have somone who works ( by choice) 6 hours per week . Are you suggesting I should pay a full 28 days holiday pay ? (more than half a years work ?)

Sleepygran Wed 25-Apr-18 01:07:02

Lots of anti labour feeling here!
My dh only got 15 days annual leave and bank holidays.
When the kids were at home we really struggled to get a holiday and help out aged parents.
Any extra annual leave would have been brilliant. Many now are on low hours contracts so employers only pay pro rata a
holiday pay, those on 0 hours contracts get No holiday pay.At all.
Many in jobs where they work shifts and bh as routine it's written into the contract,no extra pay for Bhols.
Many now work for contract companies who seem to set their own rules.

gillybob Tue 24-Apr-18 21:13:45

Maybe what he really means is another bank holiday for his public sector workers (all he cares about if the truth be told) then at least they won’t have to look for additional childcare. Sod those who work for the greedy fat cat private businesses.

Jalima1108 Tue 24-Apr-18 20:01:28

It could be picked to coincide with the autumn half term - except that half-term varies according to where you live in the UK.

newnanny Tue 24-Apr-18 17:12:55

I don't think we need more holidays, kids off school when some parents will have to work on bank holidays. We should be trying to be more productive as a nation to compete after Brexit not handing out more holidays. Corbyn is off his rocker.

Hm999 Tue 24-Apr-18 16:52:14

30 November (Andrew) makes a great Christmas shopping day! But what happens when Scotland leaves the Union?

And not all on a Monday please, it really fouls schools up.

Jalima1108 Tue 24-Apr-18 16:26:41

Should we have a vote then tell the politicians what we want - instead of them thinking they know what we would like?

I vote for a Harvest Bank Holiday, perhaps during mid-October.

mostlyharmless Tue 24-Apr-18 16:26:18

Sorry paddy how confusing!
When is a bank holiday a bank holiday!

St Andrew's Day was declared a bank holiday by the Scottish Parliament in 2006, although banks are not required to close if they do not wish to. If 30 November occurs on a weekend, the bank holiday is moved to the following Monday.
Employers are not required by law to give employees a holiday on the St Andrew's Day bank holiday

M0nica Tue 24-Apr-18 16:09:18

I think a Harvest bank holiday would be an excellent idea for a country with a mainly urban population.

Survey after survey shows how unaware people are about where there food comes from and how they cannot recognise many foodstuffs they eat when shown them in their raw or unprocessed state.

If it was made a celebration of food we eat, with Food festivals in local parks and museums and libraries running displays on the rural past of every city suburb, allottments having open days and the NT running food themed events.

It could contribute to the fight against obesity. Showing food to be fun and fabulous, home cooking easy and eating being something to celebrate rather than that dull, dreary, reading signposts on packets and keeping to 'daily limits' dictated by humourless faceless bureaucrats.
