Do you have firm evidence MaizieD of the scenario you describe, the grounded planes, our lorries excluded from mainland Europe etc or is this an imagined “worst case scenario” ?
I remember the oil crisis in the 70’s, the 3-day week, the power cuts and petrol shortages both then and since and we survived , indeed coped perfectly well.

MaizieD Sat 21-Jul-18 19:25:09

Why shouldn't we believe Rees Mogg, MawBroon? He's the voice of Brexit, isn't he. Perhaps he's being honest for once...

MaizieD Sat 21-Jul-18 19:22:58

If we end up with absolutely no deal at all then of course you would probably expect * some very brief period* of some sort of disruption.

And how long would this 'very brief' period with supermarket shelves emptying, planes grounded, no UK lorries allowed to enter the EU etc. would be tolerated before some sort of civil disturbances started happening. Days, weeks, months?

MawBroon Sat 21-Jul-18 18:05:47

Believe Jacob Rees- Mogg if you want to Jura, I take him with a very large pinch of (Maldon sea) salt.
We all know, or at least I assume we do, that he has his own agenda and I personally would trust him as far as Boris Johnson in a blindfold in a pea-souper.

'some very brief period Petra' - you should listen more closely to our Brexiter in Chief. Rees-Mogg said today it would take a 'very long time' to know if the decision was right- and went on to say '50 years' ...

how old will you be in 50 years? I would be 117, OH 123-our kids will be in their 90s and our GCs in their 60s.

Synonymous Sat 21-Jul-18 17:49:55

Petra That sounds just like hiccups. grin

Baggs Sat 21-Jul-18 17:10:52

Hysterical negativity sounds like a v.g. way to describe that, maw. I was intrigued by the mental health reference (don't know who made it). It didn't make sense to me whereas hysterical negativity did. I've seen what I'd call such before on GN.

Here's some calming words from an 'expert'
From channel 4 news last night.
Of course this only apples to people living in the ??
Andrew Lillico executive director of Europe Economics said that a no deal Brexit is still an option for the uk when leaving the European Union, but * dismissed claims that no deal would be total chaos*
If we end up with absolutely no deal at all then of course you would probably expect * some very brief period* of some sort of disruption.

I deliberately don't post on what I consider may be contentious threads but do enjoy reading them and marvelling at the astonishing things people consider are going to happen or that they consider will be the outcome of some scenario or other. I have thoroughly enjoyed the beginning of this thread but it has sadly deteriorated.
There is a saying which some attribute to Socrates: "When the argument is lost slander becomes the tool of the loser" sad

MawBroon Sat 21-Jul-18 16:46:55

Of course not Baggs!
But I think the social media- spread panicking and talking up stockpiling in anticipation of a worst case scenario are a manifestation of what the speaker on WH referred to as “hysterical negativity” ,

Baggs Sat 21-Jul-18 16:28:07

So the group hysteria referred to on this thread isn't about anyone's mental health.

Baggs Sat 21-Jul-18 16:27:07

It seems mass hysteria is not an illness: "In sociology and psychology, mass hysteria (also known as collective hysteria, group hysteria, or collective obsessional behavior) is a phenomenon that transmits collective illusions of threats, whether real or imaginary, through a population in society as a result of rumors and fear (memory acknowledgement)."

Baggs Sat 21-Jul-18 16:24:16

Can one be hysterically negative without being mentally ill? I suppose I should ask is hysteria an illness? Might head wikiwards. Not something I've ever thought about before, thus my ignorance.

Anniebach Sat 21-Jul-18 16:12:02

Ooooh, a masterful man , no thanks, the days of ‘the little woman ‘ are long gone, some sadly are ignorant of this fact.

To try to get back on course Jura you might be interested in this article with some useful comments on panic buying/hoarding and understand my abhorrence of “talking up” a situation, also known as “Chinese whispers”
Such as this
people who rush out to buy and hoard items and deprive their neighbours are clearly greedy, selfish, stupid, lazy morons. Whatever happened to Britain's much vaunted Dunkirk spirit

Lynnieg Sat 21-Jul-18 15:15:58

Mumsnet finds this useful on occasion wink

M0nica Sat 21-Jul-18 15:02:07

Experiencing life and its vicissitudes does not necessarily result in damaged mental health. In many circumstances it strengthens it.

MawBroon Sat 21-Jul-18 13:51:55

Ship of fools?

jura2 Sat 21-Jul-18 13:31:09

a coven of witches though

Anniebach Sat 21-Jul-18 11:52:29

Have no wish to reply to a man who refers to women as WAGS, a group of cattle is a heard, a group of sheep is a flock, a group of women is. Women / ladies.

Anniebach Sat 21-Jul-18 11:48:10

Hysterical negativity is not a mental health problem. Fact. No more to say on it.

Grandad1943 Sat 21-Jul-18 11:46:47

Anniebach, please read my above post as I have not stated that Mawbroon is or has been hysterical for that is what MawBroon stated in regard to two other forum members and myself.

jura2 Sat 21-Jul-18 11:42:51

It was Maw who clearly accused others of hysteria- very clearly:

A fellow guest talked about "hysterical negativity" and that is just what I am reading here from some posters including you Jura, grandad, maizieD and no doubt there are others.

and she has definitely NOT apologised to any of those she accused. She went too far, too far indeed.
