MaizieD I remember that there were no toilet rolls in the shops; it must have been before 1979 because my sister was working for a transport company and she said that the warehouse was full of toilet rolls but they were not allowed to deliver them. We concluded it was an artificial shortage in order to push up the prices - which is what happened when they appeared in the shops again.

They won't have far to go to refuel: Dunkirk.

But the French might not let them into their terminals because the captains don't have EU recognised qualifications...and the fuel pipe connections might not conform to EU safety standards any more... Everything EU related ceases on B-day, you know...

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 21:03:41

I must remind DH to check the generator is in good working order.

ps I remember the last toilet roll shortage

So do I Jalima. I was beginning to wonder if I'd dreamt it, though as no-one else seems to have done. People just look blank if I mention it.

We had all sorts of shortages in the 70s as I recall; mostly silly panic buying really - a rumour was started and woosh...shelves empty... hmm

Anyway, to be serious for a moment, why is May issuing these 'technical leaflets' in Aug/September to tell us how to prepare for a no deal Brexit?

Do try and keep up. MaizieD claimed there would be no fuel in this country for container ships to Re fuel.
I pointed out that they only had to get to Dunkirk.
Was your post @ 20.38 Re prove that you voted to remain a stab at humour, if so, epic fail.
I think the Swiss will look at your bank account first.

Chewbacca Wed 18-Jul-18 20:56:46

I'm going to stockpile rolls of tin foil. I'll make lots of little made to measure hats to sell at the market. Suspect there will be a rush on them shortly.

Agus Wed 18-Jul-18 20:56:37

Any facts to throw in here Jura? Lots of what ifs, apparently and could happen!

I get the distinct impression you are in fact enjoying relaying this POSSIBLE outcome for us Brits. Just saying?

39 ‘DEAR’.... Nice

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 20:45:40

I can't come before 15th September, any time after that please!

jura2 Wed 18-Jul-18 20:38:07

39 dear- and oh yes, one of the things I loved, and why I am married to a Brit.

But this is just the Ministry of Silly Words- and not funny at all.

Dunkirk- how are you going to get there and back, pray tell.

To come and stacy here, you'll have to prove you voted remain and never stopped to fight for it ;)

Ah jura 35 years in the U.K. and you till don’t quite “get” the British SOHgrin

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 20:24:54

We are all going to come and stay with you jura smile

Glad you find it fun and entertaining, right now.

Mrs May has announced today that “technical” leaflets are going to be issued to businesses and households in the event of a no deal. These are due out in August, September and October. They are going to advise people what they need to do to prepare, particularly people with long term medical issues. Admiting that there will be shortages on the shelves. Apparently fresh fruit and veg is in shorter supply than usual, partly due to very dry weather, but partly because of a lack of pickers who have either left the UK, or not come for the season. When ports and airports come to a standstill- you might, just might, not find it funny at all.

Bonne chance.

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 20:23:43

My DD will send wine parcels from Aus.
They used to send us food parcels in WW2 - if anyone was lucky enough to have rellies over there.

There are on this thread at least one of those fingers in ears, head in the sand Brexitiers. You know the "all let's jump off a cliff type that hopes we all have a soft landing but have no idea how that will come about.

I think they are the comedians on this thread.

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 20:20:46

This reminds me of the Millennium Bug or Y2K Scare.

Do we make toilet rolls in the UK?

lemongrove Wed 18-Jul-18 20:09:46

I have been well entertained two nights running now on GN.

lemongrove Wed 18-Jul-18 20:07:49

It was a joke jura.....just as this whole thread is one big joke.

jura2 Wed 18-Jul-18 20:06:10

Sorry Lemongrove - but with this

'Fortunately all the things I really really like are made in the UK, marmalade, rhubarb gin, Thorntons choccies.'

you really have demonstrated, as Maizie points out, an absolute inability to understand the issues and how it works.
Quite incredible. Hope your grandchildren enjoy that stiff upper lip instead of chocolate... Don't know whether to laugh or cry.

lemongrove Wed 18-Jul-18 20:01:03

MaizieD grin oh do give over, it won’t happen!
I suspect some will be miserable when it doesn’t though.
It’s being so cheerful what keeps ‘em going, as they say.

Grandad1943 Wed 18-Jul-18 19:57:52

Well, the major supermarket chains are stating that "shortages" of some perishable products could start within 24-36 hours if Just in time schedules (JIT) suddenly come to an end.

There was a program on Channel 4 last night that I only caught part of that was reporting from Immingham I think. Trucks move through the roll on roll off system there at the rate of one every forty seconds to and from the Continent.

The port management advised that if delays start of more than 15 minutes to those trucks, then the whole port would come to a standstill within an hour.

The management also advised that their own staff are now asking about the future of their jobs, but as a management, they cannot tell them anything as they have been told little themselves.

Not a great prospect, so, start stockpiling. smile

MaizieD Wed 18-Jul-18 19:54:55

Marmalade, lemon!

Seville oranges, sugar from the EU or the Caribbean? Better start stockpiling them...

Chocolate? Cocoa beans don't grow in the UK either....

lemongrove Wed 18-Jul-18 19:44:56

Maw grin there are plenty of Private Frasers on GN.
Fortunately all the things I really really like are made in the UK, marmalade, rhubarb gin, Thorntons choccies.
In the unlikely event of shortages due to Brexit, I hope I will keep a stiff upper lip.

MaizieD Wed 18-Jul-18 19:36:43

There's this well known, and used, form of transport called the container ship.

I hope there's a stockpile of them then, Petra; they might come in handy... if there's any fuel for them grin
