Boris Johnson's Latest 'Gaff'

Is it just me?

Watching the tv tonight and noting the 'shock-horror' over Boris Johnson's refusal to apologise for saying that women wearing the burka look like letter-boxes.

Why all the fuss? I'm sick of the media snatching odd, trivial comments and making mountains out of them! (Haven't we got more things to worry about than this?)

Yes, I suppose that comment was a bit rude. But a sacking offence? I think not.

In his defence, in his article in the The Daily Telegraph, Mr. Johnson did not support Denmark's new face-covering ban. And all this talk about him being 'Islamophobic' is completely groundless. So, he said something, publicly, that could be considered 'insensitive' by some.

But why are we all so quick nowadays to be offended by throw-away, silly, comments?

Get a life! (Or some more important news!)

Boris Johnson simply said what a lot of people already think. He perhaps could have worded it differently, but he was right in his views.

Honestly I am intrigued by this place. Its in London and its staffed by Muslim women in burkas , who are inadvertently preventing social contact.

How does it survive? Are the other parents not concerned?

Jalima1108 Wed 15-Aug-18 19:38:10

I have never doubted anything that Luckygirl has said and to accuse her of lying is beyond the pale.

And probably against GN rules oldbatty

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:18:42

it would help me, because I would be able to comprehend this nursery which is inhabited by burka wearing females who are preventing a small child from having human contact.

Its not true is it?

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:16:57

Where? Where in the UK do you see women cowering behind husbands and walking several paces behind.

Its utter rubbish

Luckygirl Wed 15-Aug-18 19:15:02

oldbatty - of course I am not going to divulge details on a public forum. Why would I? How would it help you?

Why do you think this is an "old chestnut"? - it happens all the time.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:11:47

My brother lives in a place where the burka is prevalent and these subjugated women walk behind their husbands or other menfolk.

That old chestnut is way out of date.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:08:14

so this person was willing to pay very high fees for a nursery but then realised the child was missing out on human interaction due to too many female workers wearing burkas?

When you friend had a look round did it not strike her as a potential problem? Was the child suffering as a result of these faceless burka wearing staff? Absolute rubbish.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 19:04:00

ah ok , well there we are then. So whats the name of it?

We have excellent state run nurseries here.

Luckygirl Wed 15-Aug-18 18:55:20

It is not state run - most nurseries are privately run.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 18:26:50

Lucky girl, I would indeed like details of any educational establishment in the UK ,which is state run, where the majority of staff wear burkas.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 18:25:05

Goth, steam punk,tatoo, piercings......choices by individual.,secular people.

Burka, the clothing worn by some Muslim women. Why on earth would anybody want to provoke, given the present situation ?

Wearing a burka is not a hate crime. Spitting at somebody or attacking them is. Possibly telling them they would be prettier without it is heading in that direction.

Just incase *Image result for a hate crime is defined as
A hate crime (also known as a bias-motivated crime or bias crime) is a prejudice-motivated crime which occurs when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership (or perceived membership) in a certain social group or race.*

I'm not quite sure where the memsahib comes into the equation.

Joelsnan Wed 15-Aug-18 18:00:04

oldbatty
When someone wears or does something provocative they do this in the knowledge that they will garner a reaction whether this is riducle, ignoring, name calling, smiles, sympathy or other.
Those who wear goth or Steam punk garb or tatoo and pierce every orifice are doing the same thing, tbey dont have to do it, they want to do it and often take flack for doing it. Would you call this hate crime?

Some folk have a somewhat memsahib colonial attitude.

Luckygirl Wed 15-Aug-18 17:51:11

oldbatty - why do you need the details? Do you believe that there are no nursery workers in our cities with their faces covered? This is a multi-cultural society we now live in.

mcem Wed 15-Aug-18 17:43:15

What a nasty remark from nicenanny. Not nice at all!

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 17:36:37

I await more information on the nursery and the " supposed " hate crimes.

Nicenanny3 Wed 15-Aug-18 17:00:14

? Perhaps we have found the real reason for wearing them lol. You have married someone ugly and don't want your friends to know ?

OldMeg Wed 15-Aug-18 16:50:35

How on earth can anyone know that someone would be ‘pretty’ underneath a veil? ???

They could be toothless, or sporting a moustache or even scarred.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 16:46:15

Please explain the need for inverted commas round the words hate crime. If something is reported and logged as a hate crime, that's exactly what it is. And the vast majority of them are never reported.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 16:44:02

Provocative.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 16:43:26

I don't think anybody I have spoken to chooses to wear proactive clothing. I will give you one tiny example. A family I met from Saudi. The lady invited me round for coffee one morning. She quickly ran in from the school run and hung her burka on a coat rack. Jeans and tee-shirt away she went to make the coffee. That is her routine. Of course she isn't being provocative or scary, that's her choice. Try to see past the sound bites and see people.

OldMeg Wed 15-Aug-18 16:38:21

Oldbatty no one on here would condone anti-muslin abuse on niqab wearing women. That’s going to happen because ignorant people get stirred up. They’ll find any excuse.

Re the hijab, which doesn’t cover the face, it is such a common sight these days I doubt anyone really bothers. It’s the niqab (usually) that stands out.

Joelsnan Wed 15-Aug-18 15:47:06

oldbatty
The muslim women do not have to wear that garb. By choosing to wear it they know they are being provocative and are attracting negative comment. They know how to stop the 'supposed' hate crimes.

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 15:46:28

An abnormal spike in anti-Muslim abuse aimed at women wearing the hijab and niqab has been recorded by the government-backed hate crime monitoring group Tell Mama.

Hope you feel proud

oldbatty Wed 15-Aug-18 15:44:13

as for " I know somone who..removed their child from nursery because of burkas", I truly would love some more information on this. Really.

I would like to google this establishment. Do share.
